That said, the Metal Gear Solid 4 platinum trophy was super fuckin fun to get. Even though it killed 2 of my ps3 consoles. (I went through 6 ps3 systems)

I'm only on my third (fingers crossed it's my last).  My original 40GB fat model which I bought new got the blinking red light.  I reflowed the solder on two occasions, but for the third time I decided to replace it.  My second model was a 120GB slim which I bought used.  It still runs today, but it don't read discs anymore, so it can only be used as a digital or streaming device.  My third model was a 500GB super slim which I bought new and is still in use today.

PS2 and PS3 are the only systems I've ever owned that have failed on me while owning them.

  2. I played through MGS4 from start to finish probably close to a dozen times, but all of that was before the trophy patch, after after they made trophies available, I haven't played it again.  I'll bet I've done 99% of the requirements to get the trophies already, but you have to start from scratch to earn them.  😐

  3. It's funny, I remember when trophies became a thing, and some games that were released before were patched to add them later.

Some games required you start over from scratch with a new save (like Metal Gear Solid 4).  Other games could determine if you already completed the requirement and awarded the trophy immediately after the patch.  One example was Tomb Raider Underworld.  I remember playing that game after the patch, and ever few seconds another trophy would be awarded and this went on for a while until it finally caught up.  I had no idea what was happening at the time and I later learned what trophies actually were.

  4. I've only gotten two platinum trophies.  Horizon Zero Dawn and MudRunner.  There are several other games where I have 100% of the trophies, but those games didn't offer a platinum.  I'm not big on trophy hunting, but for the two I mentioned earlier, I really enjoyed them enough to go for it all.  I would love to get a platinum trophy on Shadow of the Colossus, but the time trials kill me.

You aren’t kidding about that.  I picked up 9 games for an average of $3.45.  I didn’t just buy games because they were cheap either.  Picked out games I thought I’d like or my family would enjoy.

That's pretty much what I do.  Not every game will be a winner, but 9 times out of 10, you can tell what is obvious shovelware and skip.

I’ve got the PS3 hooked up, works for streaming.   So it’s a good time to look into it.

Well that, and the fact that most PS3 games are dirt cheap right now.  Some people hate on GameStop, but their "BXGX" deals or "4 for $XX" deals are hard to beat, especially with their PS3 stuff market down as much as it is.

It's definitely a great system to game on, and it's the last generation where a majority of the gaming can be played on a physical disc without any online connectivity.  The biggest issue with the PS3 is that while it has the best selection of games (for its generation), it doesn't always have the best ports.  Sometimes if a game is available on both PS3 and 360, you might be better off getting the 360 port.  Of course, it's a case by case basis.

  7. The Wikipedia list is probably as good of a list as I've seen.  It will certainly get you started.

Any particular reason you are looking for the list?  Are you into PS3 or 360?  I love buying for that system because I love the system itself and most games are super cheap right now.  However, I have absolutely no desire to go for a full set. I have several goals of finishing lots of subsets for PS3, but I'll also buy just about any interesting looking game if it's cheap enough.  I basically just avoid most sports games and obvious shovelware.  I probably own about 80% of the PS3 games I would ever want to own.

  8. I don't follow 360 collecting much, but I am a member of several PS3 collecting groups.  PS3 collecting is an odd duck.  I've seen several people online claiming to have full PS3 sets.  However, when people ask for lists, things tend to get pretty silent.  It's almost like people are afraid to share this information as if they want as little of that information out to the public as possible.  It's strange to me.  I don't really participate in any of it.  I just follow these groups to sit back and watch.

  9. There are several times in Metal Gear Solid games where button mashing is needed.  Turbo is never required to get through, but it sure makes it easier.  My understanding is that in those instances, Hideo Kojima wanted you to feel the pain that Snake was enduring, so he wanted your finger to cramp up while playing through those situations.  In my opinion, in MGS4 it really works.  The scene near the end really makes you feel uncomfortable because you are also trying to move your character while button mashing at the same time.

  10. As far as my Fairchild system goes, it's also an interesting story.

Several years ago, a local pawn shop had a HUGE influx of video games all at once.  It turns out that someone had recently died and his family didn't know what to do with his video games, so they sold them in one lump sum to a pawn shop.  I bought a decent chunk of the collection which included some of the following:

    • Atari 5200 with several working controllers, track ball controller and about 25 super clean CIB games
    • Both models of Atari Lynx with about 12 CIB games
    • Fairchild Channel F (non-working) with about 6 CIB games
    • Atari Starpath Supercharger with about 6 CIB games
    • About 20 CIB Atari Jaguar games

And what I didn't buy included the following:

    • IntelliVision with about 30 super clean CIB games
    • Atari Jaguar
    • several NES and N64 games
    • Turbografx 16

I wanted to buy more but despite getting a good deal on what I bought, I was still spending more than I wanted to at the time, so I had to cut myself off.  However, I'm glad I bought as much as I did because I'm the only collector who bought anything.  Most of the rest ended up in the hands of a local reseller who is known to be pretty scummy person.  He later tried to sell some of the exact same items under the guise of "I'm selling for my friend who's Mom is sick." 🙄

  11. Believe it or not, but a flash cart for the Fairchild exists.  It's not SD card based.  It already has all of the games, along with a prototype game included in it.  There is a guy over at Atari Age who makes and sells them.  They aren't cheap, but it provides a full library that is playable on the original system.  I would have bought one a few years ago if my system was working.

@TDIRunnerThe Fairchild controller seriously reminds me of a Bop it! That's crazy about the Atari peripheral. I've never heard of or seen one.

I never thought about it, but it is like Bop It.

I sort of wish I still have my Fairchild, but I don't know what I would have done with it.

I also have an Odyssey2 and ColecoVision, but I've slowly been selling that stuff off.  I've found that the 2600 is the only console from that generation that I have any gaming interest in.

  13. We usually go out to eat on the day of, but we go to a place that is never that busy so we don't have to worry about reservations or waiting for a table.  This year, since it's Friday, my wife decided we would just get carry out from the same restaurant, and just eat at home, which is totally fine by me.

Also, I didn't get a chance to look at them, but I know that my oldest son took Super Mario Valentine's Day cards to his school today (Kindergarten).  He was pretty excited about finding those since we've been playing Mario Odyssey lately.

  14. Another interesting system (or add-on is probably a better description) is my Atari Starpath Supercharger.  It's an add-on for the Atari 2600 that increased the RAM of the 2600 from 128 bytes to 6,272 bytes (yes seriously).  The add-on itself didn't play any cartridges.  You would insert the add on into the cart slot, and plug a cord into the headphone jack of your cassette tape player.  Then you would play the games which came on cassette tapes in your player to download the game data through the headphone jack into the add-on to play on the 2600.

It sounds crazy, but it works really well and allows you to play a much more advanced version of Frogger compared to the original 2600 port.  There were only around 12 games released for it, of which I own about half.

Today, you can buy digital versions of the games and play them through an mp3 player to skip the cassette tape player if you wish, but you will still need the actual Starpath Supercharger add-on to play the mp3s without using emulation.

  15. I had a Fairchild Channel F up until last year.  I only sold it because it didn't work, and I didn't have enough passion for the system to try and fix it.  The person who bought it seem really interested in it, so I think it went to a good home.

While I had it, I was really interested in the design of the controller.  It had the typical 360 degree joy stick.  But you could also push it down to use as "button 1" or pull it up as "button 2."  The joy stick would also twist in either direction to act like a paddle controller.  All things considered, it was pretty interesting.

This is the OG Shore movie.  For whatever that means.

I actually get what you are saying, but at this point in my life, it's not going to be enough to get me to watch it.  There are way too many things I need to watch first.

I've seen In the Army Now and Bio-Dome, so I think I've seen enough Paulie Shore in my lifetime.

Edit:  I've also seen Son in Law.

I liked the way this worked on NA (and correct me if I'm not remembering this properly). You would get the "badge" for completing it. When the game series gets a new release, it gets added to the requirements (pending approvals). All new submissions would require the new release. Folks that had obtained the "badge" already get to keep it. They do not need to get the newly released game. If that's _not_ how it worked and this was just an idea in my head, then I say we go with this 😄

That's the way I remember it too, and I think it's the best way to do it. The entire thing is on the honor system anyway because it's not really important enough for admins to take the time to truly police the thing.  (I wouldn't wish that on anyone)

Ah yes, the "Smart gamer", I remember those idiots all too well. Really, you're not missing much, it really is just a more pretentious CoD.

I'm certainly not going to defend the "smart gamer."  If I went through that same situation, I probably wouldn't pay Infinite simply on principle.

With that said, I have played Infinite and it's an amazing game.  I still prefer the original, but I highly recommend Infinite.  I can't think of any modern FPS that is FURTHER from COD than the Bioshock series.
