Tower Defense 1990 is a lot of fun, that's unfortunate you can't buy it.  Maybe I need to cover it on Homebrews in Focus 🤔

Oh darn. I've been meaning to buy those ROMs.

I’m having the same issue. Glitches on the AVS but works on the top loader. I asked retrousb if they knew of an issue with how the cart was made or if an AVS firmware update would fix it and here is his response: “First of all the board uses 3v logic, which is known to cause issues on some consoles. That is probably not what is going on with the AVS though. With this game it's most likely a bus timing issue on the CPLD. That is probably not fixable with firmware on the AVS's end.  Sorry.”

So if it's using 3v, that's a whole other issue, because LRG specifically stated: "Internal boards for the cartridge are being supplied by Retro-Bit. Each of these premium boards has been rigorously tested and will be the proper 5v standard of official NES boards, so there will be no risk of damaging your hardware!"

If they only used 5v boards for the premium edition, I wish that would have been clearer. There was no reason to suspect the premium edition carts would differ internally from the regular carts, as it seemed the only difference would be the packaging and bonus items.

  3. Just chiming in to say I'm one of the unlucky (hopefully few) who has a defective cart that doesn't work on the AVS. I discovered this when I tried to live stream it, so I have video of what was going on if anyone is curious about what we're experiencing. I too have filed a ticket with LRG, so we'll see what they say! I did discover that this works on my Gamerz Tek 8-Bit Boy HD, so it would be a shame if it works fine on a cheap clone console but not the AVS...

  4. OK, I just started one: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KtI1lqjRRitom6vttg0-w_pgRjRNji-Htb5akpXd_FE/edit?usp=sharing

I am not a wizard at Google Docs, so anyone feel free to rearrange it or add to it! I haven't added in people's results from this thread yet, but just included some examples of things we would try. And hopefully we'll come up with some new approaches and eventually crack this thing. Since this is basically a Konami code, maybe replicating something they've done on one of their NES games would work here.

  5. I'm happy to see this thread revived. Though I haven't been fiddling with the code for a while, I'm still very interested in helping to crack it. It might be helpful to coordinate our efforts, with a shared spreadsheet or something, to document the code we used and everything we tried so we can avoid duplicating and wasting time. For example, I've been wondering if Controller 2 might come into play, like it does in some NES games, but it may not even look for any inputs from that controller... There are just so many variations and places to try a code, it seems overwhelming.

  6. Gosh, thanks, everyone! It was a very gaming birthday, as my wife and friends got me a DE-10 Nano to build my first MiSTer, and for Father's Day, my wife got me some NES-themed gifts--including Battle Kid 2! She said, "I don't know why you want to play this, but I hope you enjoy it." :D

Exciting news for sure! I’ll add an update when an order link is available. But since both were already released for the famicom, they’ve been in the Almanac thread.

Oh right! Sorry, I forgot to check there. Thanks!
