The Gist; Diplomacy is a game in the vein of Risk or (Settlers of) Catan, a strategy game that requires you to fight the other players and the first one to gain the most territory, wins. It gets it's name from the fact that "Diplomacy" with other players is required to win. There are no dice, only pure strategy. It is originally a board game, but it adapts exceedingly well to forum play.
