A couple of months back I ran into a local author at Barnes & Noble, promoting his new book.  He was wearing Stephen King and Clive Barker schwag, so we started up a conversation about all things horror.  I ended up buying his book, a horror anthology, and got him to sign it.  Figured I'd support him, and I'm a sucker for short story collections.  The next day he did a promotion at my friend's book store, which was also pretty cool.

Finally cracked it open, and OH MY FUCKING GOD, it is the most unreadable shit I've ever come across in my life.  Clearly the only editor he had was his wife or girlfriend.  And he's read a lot of books, but I guess he never actually gleaned any writing tips from any of them.  And the publisher?  Googled 'em, and they're just some bullshit vanity shop that dupes talentless hacks into paying them money.

I feel bad too, cause this dude is all about this thing.  He really thought that he had "made it" and that he was gonna enter the pantheon of great writers.

Here is a sample.  This is basically every page.

    Oof, that’s brutal.

Those lists are indeed very useful to catch movies you wouldn't otherwise. It is also cool when there's like a summary of the plot just to tease you.

What I used to do a lot is when I get to know a director/screenwriter I really like, I try to watch almost all of the movies he worked on.

Yeah, I do the same with Directors and Actors/Actresses. Have ran through the majority of the filmographies of quite a few now like Sturges, Capra, Hawks, Ford, Hitchcock, Bergman, Chaplin, Miyazaki, Kurosawa, and Kubrick for directors, now working my way through Tarkovsky. On the acting front I’ve seen nearly every movie of Grant, Stewart, Dunne, Arthur, Bogart, both Hepburns and Wayne.

  3. 100- I started going after the list in the fall of 1999 after watching 12 Angry Men in my dorm room. Finished the original 1998 list, the 10th anniversary list, 100 Laughs, 100 Thrills and 100 Passions as well over the years from AFI. Currently working on world wide lists like the Time 100 and 1001 Movies to see before you die. A lot of incredible movies I would’ve never given a chance without the lists.

Nice find especially when it’s just sitting around in the collection lol. I can’t offer you what it’s worth but if you were feeling generous let me know. Best of luck with the sale.

Thanks, I never actively went after the screw variants but grabbed them in the wild every time I found one I didn’t have. The only one of around 60 I ended up with I didn’t buy at a local mom and pop shop was Goonies 2 that I snagged off of NintendoAge from a buddy. Truly had no idea this one was rare until today 😂. I know I passed on a Gotcha as well at $15 because it was double the 3 screw.

  5. It’s not easy, but I think it’s natural that the older you get the more you come to grips with your own mortality, which makes watching those older than you go downhill a little easier.

One thing having a child has shown me is that the alternative would be much worse, in watching one of your children struggle with health problems.
