  1. I thought you guys might be interested in this....maybe hah.

People often ask what sort of PlayStation things I'm talking about when I say I collect random and obscure items, mostly from Japan, so here is just one example of one of the sort of 'subsets' that I've been collecting over the years.  I present to you a mini collection of Japanese PlayStation 2 Modem and Network-type Accessory / Hardware + Software releases.  There are others, but these are most of the popular ones.  Eventually, I think I'll make a blog or something to highlight some of the strange and interesting things I have, but in the meantime, checkout the pic!  Maybe there is one other person out there in North America who actually cares about this stuff like I do! 🙂

  2. There's nothing wrong with discussing prototypes here and it is allowed and encouraged if people want to talk about them.  When we setup some general areas here, we looked at the most active areas and conversation themes that occurred on NA, modified them slightly to fit a new vision for VGS, and went forward.  It was certainly not a 'slight' toward prototype discussion in any way, nor an attempt to silence it.  So if you wanna talk about those interesting prototypes - we'd LOVE for you or anyone to make some threads, chat about it, and more!  As Gloves said, if enough people feel it needs a central area and focus, we can always revisit.

We are just starting out here and getting TONS of feedback, suggestions, and comments about the site setup and layout (which is great!), so please be patient with us as we move forward, and remember that nothing is permanent as we can always revisit or change in the future.

    Thanks!

  3. I'll have to echo Xenoblade Chronicles 2.  It has an amazing soundtrack.  I also imported the soundtrack (5-discs!) from Japan and it was a bit pricy, but worth every penny.

Aside from all the standard popular ones - the Final Fantasy, Chrono, well-known and beloved soundtracks, there are a few that I believe are underrated.  Everyone talks about the super popular ones, but I love hearing about soundtracks that aren't quite as common.

Stella Deus for PS2 - has an amazing soundtrack IMO.  There is a standard OST and also an arrange album that is just beautiful music.  I first discovered Stella Deus as it is an Atlus game, and the soundtrack by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata is just beautiful stuff.  Link below.

Valkyrie Profile for PS1 - another great soundtrack with some beautiful music.  It is a Tri-Ace / Square game, most of which have great music.   But I feel like Valkyrie Profile isn't talked about as much.  It is a great game with awesome music.  This one is by probably my favorite composer (or way up there at least) - Motoi Sakuraba.  He has done so much amazing music!

Nier for PS3 - I could rave about both this game, and the soundtrack, for days.   If you haven't played the game - do it!  As for the music, it is simply wonderful -- haunting, eerie, sometimes soft and beautiful, it is just fantastic.  And the vocals by Emi Evans are just stunning.  She has a beautiful voice.  Nier was composed by Keiichi Okabe.  Nier: Automata (PS4) also has a great soundtrack, with very similar themes reminiscent of Nier.  There is a standard soundtrack, and also a piano album that is beautiful.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch for PS3 - Even though this game was disappointing to some, everything about the style and ambiance that was created just really resonated with me.  Ni no Kuni will always have a special place in my heart, as it pulled together so many of my favorite artists and creative talent.  It was developed by Level-5, and the music composer was Joe Hisaishi - who is pretty much legendary in my opinion and has composed so much great music - for video games and otherwise - that I don't even know where to start.  The soundtrack for Ni no Kuni is a great instrumental journey, with a number of great 'epic' sounding pieces and interesting playful ones as well.  I highly recommend it!

I could go on for days with so much more.  I thought about creating a Video Game OST blog to discuss soundtracks just like this and help to share them with people so others could enjoy if they haven't yet.  I may still do that, but for now, I hope you'll checkout these below!

My favorite game that I never beat might be Kwirk for GameBoy. I think I only had two puzzles left, but I was too stumped to figure them out. That game has really great design with such simple mechanics.

I love Kwirk!  Awesome, because I don't hear much talk about it.

I am a huge ATLUS collector and that's how I discovered the game.  It's pretty fun - somewhere around here I have an advertisement poster of it.

I guess it's to avoid the appearance of being as butt-hurt about it as they obviously are?  😁  Seriously, anybody paying any amount of actual attention to what's been going on with the community and what little response there has been from the new owners (since the beginning) should be able to see what's going on without reading too much between the lines.  Sad to see so many faces I recognize seeming to side with the "wrong side" in all of this.  Hopefully said folks will eventually see the light when substantial traffic dries up over there (or the plug gets completely pulled, which is a possibility given the platform it's built on) and migrate over here, even if it's in a "dual citizen" capacity.

Additionally, I do find it kind of funny that they're now putting their foot down about folks talking about or endorsing the new place.  I know it wasn't extremely prevalent in the past, but I recall seeing mentions, references to, and recommendations to other communities provided where appropriate and nobody ever batting an eye over it.  It will be interesting to see if bans on other communities is universal, or just applicable to VGS.  If it's the latter, it'll be very telling, even by those who don't want to see it.

To be fair, and also transparent and honest with people - B.A. requested to step down long before any of the NA server outage/change occurred.  They just weren't around or active in any capacity, so they never did it.

Also, I don't see them stopping the spamming for VGS as inappropriate censoring.  I'd imagine they wouldn't have a problem with people talking about other places, even adding links occasionally.  But the level of spamming was such that I think it's very reasonable.  If people came to VGS now and did the same thing, we would probably have to do something - particularly if there were comments in welcome threads directing people to another forum.

There are plenty of other completely legitimate reasons as to why I would hope people would move to VGS and support us, given everything that has happened and how I believe we truly stand for the community - that I don't think there is any need to criticize them for what I believe are pretty reasonable moves.  That's why I want to set the record straight about things such as above.

The people owning and managing VGS....ARE a part of the community, and we actively care about fostering it without any business or profit-focused intentions.  We are dedicated to this, and I think that should hopefully speak volumes and be strong enough reasons for people to want to join us.

Has anyone figured out how to do a Latest Topics stream that is more like the original NA version?  The issue I keep having is that they always get bumped up when new replies are posted, which defeats the purpose of trying to organize the topics by date and time created.

Check out the link above with what Vaosu created.  We'll continue to look for improvements but I think for now, it's a great start!

  7. We all appreciate it - and we thank you very much.  And we thank everyone for your support and contributions!  As some have mentioned, any amount helps, and the VGS team is committed to using any funds to making this place the best it can be.

    Thank you to everyone 🙂

Hi! Trying to keep up with the NA drama. Haven't really been super active over there, but hope to stay somewhat connected to y'all! Hopefully there will be a good way to save past threads as I certainly posted a lot about Exertainment stuff! I also hope the Secret Santa will happen again...I look forward to that every year! 😁

    Hello there!

Great to see you join up with us, and don't be such a stranger now! 🙂

We will definitely have a Secret Santa as B.A. mentioned, and it's gonna be awesome!

  9. We understand this needs attention and are working on it.

We have been steadily working on the foundations for VGS, but the NA server announcement and pending server outage prompted us to get a presence up sooner so people would at least have a place to go.  For now, the concepts above should be solid guiding points, and we will share full rules and details as soon as we can.

  10. I am now spacepup but I was formerly sadikyo on NintendoAge.  It was kinda tough to say goodbye to sadikyo, which has been, well, ME, for many many many years.  To make things even more confusing for members, I ALSO changed my avatar hah.  Although, I've been using Amaterasu here on discord for a while.

I changed my name in discord to spacepup for a while as kinda sorta joke but everyone loved it so I decided to roll with it!  Plus, now I have plans for spacepup 🙂

Man, demo collecting must be quite the adventure.  I don’t imagine after a certain point it’s very easy to find new stuff.  At one point I tried to get into PS1 demos but It was too much for me.

It is.  Can be challenging, but kinda fun.  For US, I at least know for the most part which ones exist.

For Asian Regions, I had a decent list, but I’ve expanded it time and time again, finding new items that I couldn’t find referenced anywhere on the internet, even using Japanese searches and pouring through places like Yahoo Auctions, etc.  So it is kinda neat to keep finding new things and documenting them.

I’d never go after the full ps2 retail set, and I typically don’t do fullsets anyway, so I enjoy the smaller subsets, like with demos.

  12. I am a huge PlayStation fan and collect it way more than Nintendo or any other company.

I collect games for pretty much all PlayStation consoles if they are games I like - but I probably have more PlayStation 2 games than any other console.  It is probably my favorite console of all time if I HAD to pick one, and there are just too many great games to even count.

Over the past couple years, I've been specifically more interested in PS1 and PS2 demos, and and interesting import titles across all PS consoles.

I have approximately 200 USA PS2 demos, as well as about 200 Japan PS2 demos/taikenbans.

The collection set that I'm quite happy with and has been particularly difficult, is that I have 36 of 42 USA PS2 "Trade Demos" which were PS2 samples used by reviewers, etc.  Most of them are actually full games and not demos, and they usually differ just slightly from the final retail release.  There are 6 remaining that I still need, and they are VERY hard to find.

I have lots of extra PS1 and PS2 games that I need to get around to selling, so hopefully once things settle down here I can help out some other PlayStation collectors here!

  13. Hello friends!

My name is spacepup and I have landed on a strange new planet.  In a past life, I was known as sadikyo, but I have been reincarnated as a spacepup and I'm excited to begin the next chapter!

I'm really looking forward to VGS and what we can accomplish together.  I think we can make something great here, and I'm going to do my best to make this place the best it can be.

As for me personally, I have a very wide variety of gaming-related interests:

    Collecting Goals:
    * ATLUS - one of my goals is to collect all Atlus games - be it publisher, developer, etc.  Currently I'm sitting at a few hundred games and it slowly grows.  I've been a fan of ATLUS mostly from the earlier days, as their games were very unique, interesting, sometimes dark, sometimes quirky, and there was something about the earlier lore of say, the Shin Megami Tensei series, that I just found fun.  Many of their earlier games, especially RPGs, were just different from the normal formula.

    * PS2 DEMOS - for whatever strange reason, I started collecting Playstation 2 Demo Discs, mostly US and Japan.  I have a few hundred of these also at the moment.  Playstation 2 is probably my favorite console of all time.  As for demos - I don't know, I started out exploring the playstation library back with PS1 only having access to some demo discs, as it was a great way to try out a bunch of different games.  Some of the demos are extremely hard to find, which makes it a fun challenge.

    * IMPORTS / FUN GAMES - this is the catch all category for just, well, everything I like.  I love collecting games that are unique and fun, good games.  And I love checking out unique import games that many people around here aren't too familiar with.  I'm open to all things gaming, across all eras, if it is fun or interesting.

    Gaming:
HAVING FUN!  I love to play games - and it is been a huge part of my free-time entertainment life since I was a little kid.  I remember the early days playing C64, Atari 2600, etc., but as most people here, things really kicked into gear when I got a good ol' Nintendo Entertainment System.  I'll always remember the early days of playing Super Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Castlevania, Final Fantasy - all the classics and much more.  My favorite game was probably Faxanadu - I loved the adventure of it and the world they created, despite a rather simplistic story line.

These days - I will play anything --- I'll jump from playing Faxanadu on NES, to Horizon on PS4, to a random import game on PS2 that no one has heard of, to something on the Switch.  I just love good games and having fun.  I don't care what console it was on, what region it was in, etc.  If it is fun and something to enjoy, I want to experience it and can take something away from it.

My favorite games are probably RPGs, as I've always enjoyed story and character development, but I enjoy most genres, particularly platforming games, action games, puzzle games, and more.

    Other?
I have too many interests to list here, in a wall of text thread that most people won't read - but I truly enjoy meeting new people, helping out where I can, and being a part of something.  The collectibles I have are great, but at the end of the day, it is just stuff.  I genuinely cherish memories, experiences, relationships and friendships, much more than physical items.

I'm really excited to be here, and I hope to continue hanging out with all of the great friends I've made over the last several years, while also making some new ones and seeing what all we can do together.  If you made it this far, thanks for reading and I look forward to the future! 🙂
