  1. This week's results:

Question #41 (4/26-5/1) - When it comes to good special moves, what game comes to mind?

    1 MUSCLE 12.3
    2 Super Dodge Ball 8.1
    3 Captain Tsubasa II 7.6
    4 Captain Tsubasa 5.1
    5 Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku 4.7
6 Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou 4.0
    7 Joy Mech Fight 3.8
8 Hiryuu no Ken II 3.1
    9 Flying Dragon 2.6
    10 Mother 2.2
    11 Dragon Ball Z 1.7
    12 River City Ransom 1.7
    13 Dragon Ball Z II 1.5
    14 Fire Emblem 1.3
    15 Dragon Ball 3 1.2
    15 Ninja Jajamaru-kun 1.2
    15 Famicom Jump 1.2
18 Saint Seiya: Ougon Densetsu 1.2
    19 Double Dragon II 1.1
    20 Pro Wrestling 1.1

4 Kunios, 3 Dragon Balls (4 if you count Famicom Jump), and lots of fighting and wrestling. However, the MUSCLE/Kinnikuman nostalgia ends up on top. It's actually the second poll that game has won (#19 - tag). They love their MUSCLE over there... I like it better than Tag Team Wrestling, at least.

Next week's question: When it comes to -chan/-kun, what game comes to mind?

That would refer to the honorifics used in Japanese used mostly for younger boys/girls. "kun" is sometimes translated as kid, like Dracula-kun = Kid Dracula. Kunio-kun is the most obvious answer here, although like this poll it might be divided among multiple games. Maybe the Ninja-kun/Jajamaru-kun games too. Also expecting some joke votes for Jackie Chan.

  2. This week's results:

Question #40 (4/19-4/25) - When it comes to a good story, what game comes to mind?

    1 Dragon Quest III 22.0
    2 Dragon Quest IV 13.3
    3 Mother 8.9
    4 Shin Onigashima 5.0
    5 Okhotsuku ni Kiyu 4.9
    6 Famicom Detective Club (part 2) 4.5
    7 Final Fantasy II 4.3
    8 Final Fantasy III 3.8
    9 Famicom Detective Club (part 1) 3.5
    10 Megami Tensei II 2.0
    11 Captain Tsubasa II 1.4
12 Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken 1.2
    13 Metal Slader Glory 1.1
    14 Fire Emblem 1.1
    15 Dragon Quest II 1.0
    15 Kirby's Adventure 1.0
    17 Yuuyuuki 1.0
    18 Lagrange Point 0.8
19 Sanma no Mei Tantei 0.7
19 Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Toki no Sugiyuku Mama ni 0.7
19 Doraemon: Gigazombie no Gyakushuu 0.7

DQ3 wins, of course. The end game stuff is memorable, but I'd say DQ4 might have a better story overall. Although, I still think 3 is the better game. I'd go with StarTropics in an NES poll.

Next week's question: When it comes to good special moves, what game comes to mind?

Tough one. I don't know if any fighting games like Joy Mech Fight are popular enough to finish first. Maybe just something basic like Mario 3?

  3. This week's results:

Question #39 (4/12-4/18) - When it comes to simulation games, what comes to mind?

    1 Famicom Wars 22.6
    2 Fire Emblem 22.1
    3 Nobunaga's Ambition 8.7
    4 Gachapon Senshi 2 5.0
    5 King of Kings 3.8
6 Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3.1
7 Gachapon Senshi: Scramble Wars 2.8
    8 Dai-2-ji Super Robot Taisen 2.6
    9 Fire Emblem Gaiden 2.0
    10 Dokuganryuu Masamune 1.9
10 Best Play Pro Yakyuu 1.9
    12 Hanjuku Hero 1.5
13 Romance of the Three Kingdoms II 1.3
14 Sangokushi: Chuugen no Hasha 1.2
    15 Nobunaga's Ambition III 1.2
    16 Nobunaga's Ambition II 1.0
    17 Gachapon Senshi 3 0.9
    18 Dai Kaijuu: Deburas 0.7
18 Best Keiba: Derby Stallion 0.7
    20 Gachapon Senshi 4 0.7

Very close finish for first place. Those are the two games I think of when I imagine "Famicom strategy rpg". The presence of the sequel likely led to Fire Emblem finishing second. There's four Gachapon Senshi games, three Nobunaga games (including the third one, which was released on the SNES in the US as "Lord of Darkness"), and three Romance games (including Namco's Sangokushi). Also, Best Play Baseball, which was a different take on the sport.

We're now 75% of the way through the year of polls!

Next week's question: When it comes to a good story, what game comes to mind?

I'm expecting the usual rpgs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Also interested to see how good the adventure/visual novel games do. A number of people are mentioning Famicom Detective Club on Twitter, but that game is in two parts, so it's unlikely to finish first. I doubt Portopia is interesting enough story-wise to finish super high.

Sky Kid and Slalom are done! Took me a good while to get the hang of Slalom, but after beating one hill I was able to come back the next day and beat the other two fairly easily. It's actually a really fun game!

Nice, Sky Kid is such a tough game. I was trying a few years ago and I only got to stage 21. Happy to see that one off the list!

    Right on!

Did you beat it with a normal controller? Maybe I'll screw around with it next year.

Yeah, normal controller. Got about 35 lives and ended up with around 10. Just went back and forth between two screens on the first area until I had enough to move on. Overall, it only took about 90 minutes, but I've beaten it twice before.

I think this game is similar to Arkanoid, in that the glove would allow you to move faster than the controller, but it's still totally beatable without it.

Question #38 (4/5-4/11) - When it comes to "4 character titles", what game comes to mind?

    1 Xevious 17.5
    2 Tetris 8.7
    3 Life Force 8.6
    4 Karateka 7.8
    5 Door Door 6.0
    6 Seicross 5.8
    7 Getsu Fuuma Den 5.4
    8 Ufouria 5.1
    9 Mappy 2.9
    10 Son Son 2.9
    11 Milon's Secret Castle 2.3
    12 Galaga 2.0
    13 Karnov 2.0
    14 1942 1.7
    15 Pooyan 1.3
    16 Puyo Puyo 1.2
    17 Hanjuku Hero 1.1
    18 Legend of Kage 1.1
    18 Pro Wrestling 1.1
    20 Contra 1.0

Xevious walks away with first place, doubling the second place Tetris. As before, these type of questions will be hard to comprehend unless you're looking at the Japanese spellings. Hopefully, this is the last of them, since they're not too interesting. It's mostly just a list of well-known games. Hebereke/Ufouria is on the list, which is probably because of the recent release of its sequel on modern platforms.

Next week's question: When it comes to simulation games, what comes to mind?

Koei stuff?. It all depends on what people consider simulation to be. I saw some people mentioning strategy rpgs like Famicom Wars and Fire Emblem, and some people mentioning sports games.

  7. I've beaten Gauntlet again. Yeah, it takes a lot of restarts on the last password. The easiest way is to start on level 79, go to the treasure room on 83, and then purposely die on 84. This way, you can max out your bombs and get to 1600 treasures for more max health (the game only updates your password after beating a treasure room). Once you have all that, then you can make serious attempts at beating it.

Good list, many of these were late releases and so people likely didn't play them as much. Time Twist was FDS-only, and I don't think it was ever re-released (probably because of the imagery), so that makes sense. Never heard of Minelvaton Saga, but I may have to check it out. Star Luster surprises me a bit, because it's an earlier Namco game, but maybe not many bought it. Those who played it should seriously play Star Raiders though; It's superior to its copycat.

Star Luster is a common cart, I think it sold well. But the interest in games like that has fallen off so much, that maybe now it seems like a hidden gem to its fans.

  9. This week's results:

Question #37 (3/28-4/4) - When it comes to "hidden gems", what game comes to mind?

    1 Minelvaton Saga 2.5
    2 Just Breed 2.3
    3 Lagrange Point 2.0
    4 Metal Slader Glory 1.9
    5 Joy Mech Fight 1.8
    6 Time Twist 1.3
    7 Mendel Palace 1.2
    8 Metal Max 1.1
    9 King of Kings 1.1
    10 Gimmick 1.1
    11 Sweet Home 1.0
    12 Cocoron 1.0
    13 Spy vs Spy 0.9
    13 Dark Lord 0.9
    15 Crystalis 0.9
    16 Zanac 0.9
    17 Keru Naguuru 0.8
    17 Star Luster 0.8
    19 Rampart 0.7
    20 Radia Senki 0.7

Fascinating results! A very divided poll, with the winning entry only getting 2.5%, easily the lowest of any poll so far. Lots of rpgs up and down the top 20. I haven't played Minelvaton Saga, but it's an action rpg similar to Ys. I can testify that Metal Max is fun one, though (unlike Radia Senki, that game is trash). The quality of the games here is pretty good, with stuff like Gimmick and Crystalis among the best on the system for me.

Next week's question: When it comes to "4 character titles" what game comes to mind?

Poll #18 was 5 character titles, poll #33 was 3 character titles, so I guess this was gonna happen at some point. Xevious, Mappy, and Seicross were among the answers on Twitter.

7 days to get 7 games if we want to break the record for fastest to 650. Who's working on something that could be done in that time? Do we think we have any chance?

My list is looking pretty slim, I'm open to hearing about any game on the list that's not too tough or crazy long but I think that pretty much eliminates everything still left haha.

I'm considering trying Athena (long and difficult) or Gauntlet (difficult as hell) again, or possibly seeing if I can get the pitching trick to work in Bases Loaded, though I could also barely score a hit in the batting of that game, so I'm not likely to be winning any games there any time soon.

Wouldn't count on much in the way of completions from me, but I'll give those a shot throughout this week and see what I can come up with. I'll be out of town this upcoming weekend to see the solar eclipse, but will probably bring some kind of NES with me to attempt some games in my down time.

I'm still playing Dragon's Dogma 2 and FF7 Rebirth (which has an incredibly long platinum trophy grind). I could beat Gauntlet again without too much trouble, I think. Super Glove Ball is another one I might do again, it should only take maybe 2 hours having done it before twice. I could also try Kung Fu Heroes again, since you really just need one good run (which is 10-15 minutes).

Question #36 (3/21-3/27) - When it comes to "farewell/separation", what game comes to mind?

    1 Final Fantasy II 22.0
    2 Dragon Quest III 13.7
    3 Dragon Quest IV 9.5
    4 Shin Onigashima 6.2
    5 Mother 5.6
    6 Fire Emblem 4.4
    7 Final Fantasy III 4.1
8 Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken 2.7
    9 Ginga no Sannin 2.5
    10 Dead Zone 2.2
    11 Binary Land 2.0
    12 Lagrange Point 1.8
    13 Ghosts 'n Goblins 1.4
    14 Takeshi no Chousenjou 1.2
    15 Dragon Quest II 1.1
    16 Okhotsuku ni Kiyu 1.0
    17 Megami Tensei II 0.8
    18 Wizardry 0.8
    19 Ice Climber 0.7
    20 Ys II 0.6

Final Fantasy II is a good choice because of all the characters joining/leaving that 4th party slot throughout your adventure. This is also the first poll that any Final Fantasy game has won, compared to 6 for DQ so far.

Binary Land is an interesting answer, since you're controlling two characters at once and trying to reunite them. GNG is there because of the memorable (and unskippable) opening scene.

Next week's question: When it comes to "hidden gems", what game comes to mind?

I'm very curious to see the results of this one. Something like Gimmick comes to mind. Or maybe something like Battletoads or Kage (Shadow of the Ninja). I wonder what would win an NES hidden gems poll these days, because I feel like most of the answers from 20+ years ago are more well known now, like Metal Storm or River City Ransom.

Every single game with a "see you" message on the ending. If it were a game boy poll then surely Makai Toushi SaGa would be up there for its well-known "See you again!" ending.

@scaryice what word exactly did they use for "farewell"?

    第36回 -「別れ」といえば?

I guess maybe separation is a better way to describe it, as you'll see in the results below...

@scaryice Is this a record pace for all the years you've run this thing?

We started off just okay, but we've really been crushing it since 300. Not quite a record yet, but it could be depending on how we finish:

      2024 Rank
    50 01-Jan 1st (tied)
    100 02-Jan 7th (tied)
    150 03-Jan 8th (tied)
    200 05-Jan 8th (tied)
    250 07-Jan 7th (tied)
    300 12-Jan 7th
    350 15-Jan 4th (tied)
    400 21-Jan 4th
    450 28-Jan 3rd
    500 03-Feb 3rd
    550 13-Feb 3rd
    600 02-Mar 2nd
    650
    677

The record for 650 is April 8th, and the record for all 677 is June 12th.

Question #35 (3/14-3/20) - When it comes to "action game," what comes to mind?

    1 Super Mario Bros. 41.6
    2 Elevator Action 6.2
    3 Super Mario Bros. 3 5.2
    4 Kung Fu 3.3
    5 Mega Man 3.0
    6 Mega Man 2 3.0
    7 Mario Bros. 1.9
    8 Kirby's Adventure 1.9
    9 Castlevania 1.8
    10 Ninja Gaiden 1.2
    11 Goonies 1.1
    12 Donkey Kong 1.0
13 Konami Wai Wai World 0.9
    13 Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP) 0.9
    15 Adventure Island 0.9
    15 Challenger 0.9
    15 Ghosts 'n Goblins 0.9
    18 Spelunker 0.8
19 Yie Ar Kung Fu 0.7
    20 Renegade 0.6
    20 Mega Man 3 0.6

Elevator Action sure is an action game. I didn't even think of that. If this were an NES list, there would be three more games with that word in it: Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu (just Jackie Chan in Japan), Last Action Hero, and NES Play Action Football. The latter two not receiving a Famicom release.

Quite a large victory for SMB. It's the second biggest margin of victory in these polls, only trailing poll #14. That was when Dragon Quest II won for the password question with 48.8% of the vote, over DQ1's 10.6%. DQ2's percentage there was also the highest in any question so far, with SMB this week being 5th.

Next week's question: When it comes to "farewell", what game comes to mind?

Maybe Adventure Island IV, since that was the last game released over there?

Good luck to anyone trying to beat Rally Bike. Bump into anything and you're right back at the beginning of the race. I can't even beat the first race. What a piece of shit.

I made a list of when to get gas a few years ago when I beat it. Sometimes, you can skip a stop with a hi-gas power up. Also, it doesn't matter where you finish on the last stage of the second loop, the "ending" is the same regardless.

    1-LA

    2nd station, after trains

    2-SF

1st station, after first blue car
2nd station, right after the first one

    3-PHX

1st station, after a while on either side
2nd station, after first set of buildings

    4-DEN

    1st station, after train tracks

I'm also interested in a bit more discussion on this. I don't care for save states, but I think I could live with using them in lieu of leaving a 35 year old console for days at a time with the kind of long games that Khromak is talking about.

I'm against it. If you allow them for this kind of convenience, then it's a slippery slope to allowing them for other things too. I don't think there's many games which even necessitate you to leave your system on for that long. A better use of your time is probably just doing a run on emulator with save states to practice, and then doing a real run without them.

I'm currently working on Formula 1: Built to Win. It actually seemed really fun and I even got to the last race in Hawaii. But I looked it up online and apparently the couses that I'm playing right now are only the first half or so of the game. So there's still a LOT more coming up. On top of that, I'm struggling with most of the races right now as they're quite challenging. I hope the second half of the game won't be such a struggle throughout.

Well, about that... Here's an old post I found:

I'll give a couple of tips if anybody's thinking about giving it a shot, save 1 million before entering F1 circuit so you can max out your car right from the start, and it is really important that you win as many of those early F1 races as you can while you are overpowered because it's only going to get tougher as you progress to the end.
