I beat Beavis and Butthead on Game Boy. It's maybe a four out of ten? Obviously the appeal for this game is the general vibe. Hitboxes are gummy, there's a ton of spots where you absolutely cannot avoid taking damage, and it's not always crystal clear where you're supposed to go next, but after reading all the B&B dialog for the whole game, I started thinking stuff like "I'll just, like, go over there again or whatever. Heh. Heh-heh." So it's not a top-ten game or anything, but it was more enjoyable than a handful of other games I could name. It had an inventory system that gave it some needed complexity. There's an arcade game in one of the in-game locations with an actual mini-game you can play, that would have blown my mind as a kid.

I'm "almost" done with Skyward Sword, but I've thought that for a long time now. Who knows how much longer the game is. I'm trying not to be annoyed that it's not finished yet (like an old man trying to check boxes), and trying to be glad that there's still stuff to do (like a kid playing a game after school). There's lots of good and bad with this game.

I like Skyward Sword a lot and I will give it to you that the end kind of drags some. Most of it’s fun but there’s a couple things I’ve grown to loathe.

  2. Kirby’s Dreamland 3 is done. I didn’t go for the good ending but if I were to play again I absolutely would. This game felt very run of the mill for Kirby. Good controls, great graphics/aesthetic and a non interesting story. All in all, glad to have played it and I did enjoy it. Especially the references to other Nintendo properties sprinkled in. One thing to note is, this has to be one of the best looking SNES titles I’ve seen.

  3. I’m now officially half way through Dreamland 3 and it’s starting to grow on me. Building the ROB on level 3 was super cool and these levels are becoming more involved and interesting so maybe my grim outlook was premature.

I concur. Kirby's Dramland 3 is probably the most gorgeous classic Kirby game by a wide margin, but I don't remember being particularly taken with the gameplay when I tried it out several years ago. (Granted - I didn't go for the "good" ending by collecting the special items or whatever, so I know there's a deeper experience to be had if you're so inclined...)

I did look into it but I’ve got to say the game isn’t grabbing me enough to want to, if that makes sense? I’ll finish the game as I’m half way through but it’s lack luster. 😕

As someone who grew up playing Kirby games and is blinded by nostalgia for them, I wasn't huge on Dreamland 3 either

That’s reassuring to hear, I’m a huge fan of Kirby’s Adventure but man these other titles of the era fall flat 😕

  6. I finished Mario Advance 2.

I ended up doing 92/96 exits. Super Mario World is always a good time but it’s lower on the Mario rankings for me personally. It was fun to experience in a new way despite not being terribly different from the original version.

I started up Kirby’s Dreamland 3 and it’s been okay. The graphics and music are super good but the game just feels a little dry? Maybe I don’t like Kirby games that much 😕

Ill power through and wrap this up in the next week I’d imagine.

Rainbow island is done again, really quite fun but some of the movement mechanics can get a bit frustrating at times and the final level is pretty tough.

The last level definitely has some really frustrating parts and that levels music specifically kills me. The fourth world too, I’ve always struggled

Just an FYI, the Switch online version of the game includes all of the e-Reader levels. They are worth checking out, if you haven't already. There's some really interesting and creative ideas, and it pulls mechanics from some of the other Mario titles (pulling up vegetables like Mario 2, the cape feather from World, etc.)

I didn’t realize that! I’m going to revisit it now!

Get the rom with all the bonus e-reader levels that were released in Japan. I think about 38 or so levels. They're some of the best Mario stages I've ever played and really challenging.

Oh woah! I’m going to do that!

  10. Super Mario Bros Advance 4 is completed.

Prior to playing this, I was under the assumption that the game had extra little things to collect and make the game a little more “fulll.” Regardless, I still really enjoyed the game. Super Mario Bros 3 is a top 5 game for me and enjoying it in a (slightly) different light was still super enjoyable. I did find it interesting in a few places how they added extra blocks or something similar to it a little easier. The only thing I didn’t care much for was that the Toad/Peach sprites didn’t look great. 😅

One side note, it took me a bit to figure out how to consistently get the stars at the end of the stage which I typically can do but I was able to figure that out eventually. O also finally can consistently bear the air ship level in world 8!

All in all; not what I expected but still a great time.

  11. Pikmin 2 is done.

I’ve found with the Pikmin games I really like to get the best ending because the game really engrossed me but this one fell a little short.

Cons: I hated the random falling enemies/rocks in caves, map felt kind of intuitive, Olimar’s boss sucks, the cave floors felt wildly uneven in terms of challenge, the lack of the 30 day time limit greatly cut back challenge

Pros: the branding on the treasures was a fun touch, the caves are a cool concept and executed well for the most part, new Pikmin are always fun, enemies (Prog’s in particular) didn’t seem quite so difficult, Pikmin had more of a sense of their own.

Overall the game definitely grew on me more and I’m sure I’ll go back eventually and “complete” it but it pales in comparison to 1 and 3 in my eyes. I’ve not played 4 yet.

Overall fun but I’d sooner revisit one of the others. Super Mario RPG is next I believe!

Lolo 3 is done. I had to look up hints for a couple levels and the solution for the final level (it's insane no human could figure that out), but overall did better than most years in terms of spoilers. The game is very tough, bordering on the line of unfun for a couple levels. I prefer the earlier games, but this one is still good

    20240130_042205.jpg

Your thoughts on Lolo perfectly summarize it for me. There was a couple levels that drove me insane when I played and when I looked up solutions, I would have never figured out. I love the first two but three is just too tough in some spots.

  13. Burning and turning this year. 2 games before the end of the month!

    Pikmin 3 is done!

I really love this series and can’t wait to play more. I have to say the challenge was substantially less in this one which I wasn’t sure if it was the immense learning curve I encountered from playing and learning the first game or if it’s just easier overall.

I didn’t get the “best” ending but I enjoyed it enough to where I’ll return to it and clean it up. Overall, very happy and I will return to it. To keep the Pikmin streak alive… Pikmin 2 is next!
