Do you chronicle your PCB design anywhere? I design PCB's at work and would love to see what your working on.

Not actively. This is something I've been rattling around in my brain. I don't always want to show off what I doing before it's done because I don't want to get hopes up in case it doesn't finish. But I've thought about doing videos on my process. The only issue is that I do 75% of my development in discord calls with my friends while watching shows or just BSing. It might be something I do in the future.

The big project I am currently working on is a speech board for the later revisions of Nintendo Radar Scope arcade pcbs. It's in the later stages of development.

I also did a few pcbs for my Nintendo Head On N project.

The project that I recently finished was an LED rank board mod for Gorf. The second run of those boards are about to be available for sale.

I do have other stuff in the pipeline, but nothing I am quite ready to show off. I don't typically make threads for my design stuff, I do however have a blog for my arcade and pinball repairs:

  2. Absolutely. I was once upon a time collecting for a number of things, but then I switched to collecting some NFR stuff. These days I am not actively persuing much of anything in terms of console games.

Since about 2020 or so I've been primarily focused on my arcade collecting and repair projects. I've also shifted a lot of my focus to pcb design in the context of arcade and pinball. For now though, I'll really only be buying games I actively want to play.

  3. It's been a while since I've found a side-of-the-road special. Probably gonna steal the tube for a K7400 arcade monitor since it has the same exact tube. Sprayed it with the hose since it had a nice nicotine coating.

  4. People forget that the internet is a terrible place full of goblins who just wanna put people down. Community is everything, even to a fault. It's up to a newcomer to find a community that isn't terrible. Unfortunately reddit can be a very loud place, it's better to find the small communities in my opinion.

Regarding new folk themselves, it can be a little frustrating to feild a question that would be the first result in a google search, but being nice and helping is how you integrate new people in. More importantly it gets new folk into the hobby of which might have something positive to bring in. You won't know until you find out. Basically, give people the benefit of the doubt. This whole idea of gatekeeping is incredibly toxic.

  5. I am only doing arcade stuff these days, but if given 5 left it would probably be the following (as of right now)

    • Bosconian
    • Dig dug
    • A dynamo cabinet so I don't have to switch between bubble memories and bubble symphony (my current one is Bubble Symphony themed)
    • Tempest
    • Missile Command

Honorable mention to Space Firebird, Gyruss, and Millipede.

  6. Good work, I've done a few of those and they can be a little tricky. It's super important to get started with replacing pc engine/turbo grafix caps because they suffer from the cap plague. It seems like they didnt leak a ton, so that's good news.

Cool thread!  I'm no expert, but I've brought a couple machines back to life.  Like learning a whole new thing every time.  Thanks for sharing your steps here.  It may help me in the future as I own the cocktail version.

Funny enough I have a table too. It's currently missing the monitor and control panels, so it's just a waiting game.

I also write repair logs if that helps ya. I am really behind in writing new ones but should be soon.

  8. Well the time has come to work in my first vector. I picked this cabinet up from a KLOV member a little while back and was going to wait to restore it until I moved due to how heavy this cabinet is. However, moving is being pushed back several months so screw it! I brought it home yesterday.

First thing I did was validate power. I shotgunned the 2n3055 since I have those on hand (using up the rest of my thermal paste). From there I checked the ripple on the 5V rail. I measured some .4V of AC ripple so I replaced the big blue, after doing such it was good. From there it was testing the game board. To my suprise it booted up! Vectors are a little shakey but I've read that it could be because of the gain pots, those are on order.

With the game board outputting known good signals, it was finally time to mess with the monitor. This was my first time working on a G05-802. I figured it wouldn't be too terrible, it was described to me as "the baby mode of monitors". F700 was missing from the deflection board so I assumed the worst that one or both of the deflection transistors was shorted out. Testing it from the connector, I measured a dead short between the collector and emitter pins on the connector. Pulling it, someone had made a goof by swapping places of the 2n3716 and 2n3792. The 2n3716 tested bad, but I ended up swapping the pair (putting them in the correct places). Also replaced fuse F700 with the specified 2A fast blow fuse. This solved that issue, however I had another issue: brightness was cranked up and the adjustment was unresponsive. It is probably responsible for the burn spot on the monitor.

This ended up being a simple fix, I believe it was C504, that cap had actually tested bad. While I was there, I replaced all the other caps (except for the 6800uF input filters because I didn't have them on hand). I also reflowed the solder on all of the connectors due to a handful of cold solder joints being present. After that, contrast and brightness were fully adjustable.

Right now the game is playable but like I mentioned earlier, the vectors are a little shakey. I am still looking into that. I also have recap the HV cage on the monitor. Hopefully I'll make some progress this week. Overall this cabinet is in good shape and won't need a ton.

  9. I'm hopefully finishing up the software soon. However, I decided to make a couple minor changes to the hardware:

    • Removed the debug port
    • Removed individual pullup resistors
    • Removed DTR capacitor on reset line (unecessary without debug port)
    • Replaced resistor array with two extra resistors to account for the removed individual pullup resistors.

I did an interest check on another forum. If you want one of these speech boards let me know. I am doing one run of these and that's it.

That's pretty sweet!  I always get two copies of the flyer for each arcade game I have (to show the back and front beside each other) and frame and hang them close to the games they are for...

That's rad. I have a few more flyers. I got one for puzzle bobble 2 and then one for VS Duck Hunt. I wanna get more but I don't have the room right now to display them. It's a plan for the house when I get there.

Actually, for cocktail tables it would be kinda cool to have them underneath the glass. I have all this unused room to put something like that there. Problem is that Pre-Donkey Kong Nintendo stuff isn't the easiest to find for a good price.

  11. I have been slowly pairing down my game collection for a little while now to focus on arcade stuff.

In terms of arcade cabinets, I have 20 now. One is a playchoice, I think I have 12 carts for that. I have tons of boards and monitors these days but I don't count that really. If you wanna see what I have, my VAPS is up to date (except for congorilla, I forgot to add that): https://www.arcade-museum.com/members/member_detail.php?member_id=486462

Otherwise, I have about 20 games for each nintendo console except for NES which is closer to 80ish these days.

Championship pub is a really cool game. We had one in the shop a couple years ago. The little mini games like the jump rope thing were really cool. Fighting the drunk was also really cool. We had to replace the drunk as the mount for it had broken. But we used it for the christmas tournament trophy.

From a repair standpoint that one was a pain, but it is such a fun game that I don't care.

  13. What mappers are you looking for? I've done a couple NES and one famicom design.

I have designs for CNROM and UNROM. Just let me know requirements. I do a good deal of PCB design and fab work. Here's the one that I did custom for a famicom project (not final).
