But the school also allows electronics, and sure as shit, there's a row of about 10-15 kids sitting against the wall, not playing or interacting with any other kids.

Does anyone have a pulse on when this switch happened?

"Back in our day"... electronics were a sure-fire confiscation to be returned at the end of the day if you were lucky.

At what point did schools start tolerating kids having phones readily accessible?  Seems like terrible judgment, to me.

(though I also think it is pretty poor judgment for elementary aged kids to have their own smart phone in the first place)

Is it cheating if you use a cheat device or save-state to practice a certain level or boss, so that you're good at it when you get there in a legitimate run?

Only in the context of that particular run being invalid for any kind of scoring run or "winning the game".

But it doesn't matter how you get the cumulative experience that lets you eventually be good at the game.

  3. No Spoilers -- but go out of your way to see it.

Caught a matinee with the wife and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Everybody does a great job, but this is one of my favorite Sam Rockwell performances.

  4. Boosted and jonebone -- thanks for the additional field reports!

I've seen some Facebook chatter from old college buddies that are still in Atlanta (peak Chik Fil A territory) that didn't quite have the Popeye's sandwich meet expectations, so it seemed like it was turning into a YMMV type of thing  (though, that said, quality DOES seem to vary from one Popeyes to the next, a lot more than a super-consistent place like Chik Fil A)

I have to go with Charles Martinet, sorry. His voice is just so iconic and, IMO, when you think of Mario being acted out in any capacity, you instantly think of Martinet's voice acting.

Not if you grew up with Captain Lou every afternoon. 😛😉

  6. My kids get to share a couple of hand-me-down tablets for TV watching on car trips (and occasional at-home show-watching when my wife and I are using the living room TV).

I am not planning to get either one of them dedicated devices of their own until they are MUCH older.

My daughter (about to be 6) has been making "paper phones" for the better part of a year (she'll fold up paper into a cellphone, populate a calendar for the month, draw a picture to have inside it like a locket, and make the face look like a dial-pad).    Point is, kids already see and get way too much passive exposure to this stuff for me to want them to have a device that they get to claim as their own (making me the bad guy when I take it away) versus a shared family device that they have to ask permission to use at all.

I am planning to get a cheapie desktop PC to share with the kids, though, so that they can hopefully have some of the same formative experiences I did playing around on his original Macintosh.

  7. Captain Lou was the more iconic Mario of my childhood.

Bob Hoskins gets a close second, I guess, though he and John L. would have made a better movie if they'd been less drunk less of the time.

There are series 1 and 2 of the actual robots, plus a series of dinosaurs that the food items changed into.  The above pic is pretty dino heavy from what I can tell, with all three hotcakes, the happy meal box, and the middle box of large fries being part of that series.  I want to say the drink is too, but it's been so long since I've had my set of series 1-2 robots in-hand that I couldn't tell you from just a glance.

Edit:  Following the blog links from the Wikipedia link below, I can say that the shake cup in the photo is one of the dinos based on the cutouts on top.

There definitely was a hotcakes robot, but I can't recall which series it was in.  There were paint variations of a couple of the robots--large fries for sure, and I want to say the Big Mac?

Here's a link to the Wikipedia article about them all.  Apparently they were called "Changeables," with the first two series being the robots, then the dinos rounding them out at the end.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changeables

Edit 2:  Here's a good link to photos of all 3 series, since the series 1 & 2 links from Wikipedia are now broken.  https://dinosaurdracula.com/blog/mcdonalds-changeables/

Thanks for the link.  I never had any of the dinosaur changeables, just the original robots.

Looks like I have a complete set of the first year, and I'm missing hot cakes and the "small fry" robot from the second year.

Pretty surprised we never ended up with any of the dinosaurs, because we had a pretty robust collection of McDonald's toys.

EDIT: and the pics in the link don't cover it, but there are a number of "paint variants" for each year with different colors from what is shown.

I think you're right that both the big mac and fries had multiple paint options -- wouldn't surprise me if that was true for the entire set.

Looking at the picture I am missing the Big Mac. There are a different variations on the fries and hot cakes.

There isn't just the Big Mac, there is at least one version of a foam-pack Quarter Pounder, and another out of the pack burger/sandwich that isn't a big mac.

There are at least 2 or 3 versions of the milkshake, as well -- there is the "fold out / tall" guy and there is more of a "clamshell" that slides open.

I may be missing the hotcakes, as that doesn't look familiar.

I won't get to it tonight, but I'll try and get a picture of my "collection" this weekend, to share.

Thanks guys!  I've gotten one PM so far, fingers crossed I can make a deal and finally get to check this out!  Fingers really crossed the KHan decides to port over some of the other Sierra classics, as I'd be over the moon to play some Space Quest, King's Quest, etc. on the NES!

Quest for Glory would be a great one to have with some modifications to make it more console-friendly.

Thief 2. Recently started playing this one for the first time after seeing Razorfist stream it on Youtube.

On NES, picking up Solstice for the first time in decades to give it a fair shake. Like it so far.

    Solstice is a great game.

Much more fun if you have the patience to hand draw a map!

I remember strongly disliking it, but you're better at games than I am 😛 . I never even made it far enough to see the submarine.

The controls in the game are less forgiving than NES SMB, but it is worth sticking with to make it to the sub level.

Give it another try, where you just avoid bad guys and focus on the platforming, to not get sucker punched by the hit detection.

Also, look for the secret lifts in both cave levels - they will save you a lot of heartache to simply run through most of the level above the enemies entirely!

  13. Super Mario Land on the GB is a great early example as well.

The submarine level was a huge surprise, and probably the most fun level in the game.  Toss up with the airplane level at the end.

Nice to know about Air Wolf.  That one is new to me as well.

Everyone knows about Contra and Super C

Lifeforce and Legendary Wings have vert and horz scrolling levels

Bionic Commando has side scrolling and  overhead parts along with Rygar and Snakes Revenge

Didn't even think about Bionic Commando, as the classic "Commando" overhead sequences are kind of an afterthought and only matter a couple of times in-game.

Blaster Master is a great one that flips the Bionic Commando formula (overworld sidescrolls and main levels are overhead mazes)

    I'd take that bet.

    Yeah...Dain has moved on.

He is comfortable with the terms of the sale, or he wouldn't have gone through with it.

And I suspect he knew that we had a dedicated group that would be able to whip up a new and improved forum that fixed long running concerns.

Truth told, we are all better off with the new site.

And Dain got his buyout capital from some stooges at GoCollect instead of us, which doesn't hurt my feelings one bit.
