Aw man, I love Star Soldier! I think the most important criteria for enjoying it, though, is recognizing that it isn't really the same category of shoot-em-up as Gradius or Salamander. It's almost more like Galaga in some ways.

That being said, I've never made it very far in the game, either. And I ALWAYS play with turbo haha. Does your Analogue Pocket support auto-fire?

I can appreciate what it was trying to do at the time but I just feel that it never executed those things properly. With limited time in peoples lives I would recommend people play Gradius or Salamander.

I think 4.5 isn’t too bad of a score, that puts it at just below average. Not bad but nothing propelling it to be part of the greats.

That’s a good question about turbo on the Pocket. I’ll have to look into it.

Even though it ultimately had a decent box office, I think it was a little disappointing when it opened. This was Lucinda Dickey's first movie, but it was released after Breakin' which was a big hit. So Ninja 3 not living up to that, combined with Breakin' 2 completely flopping, led to Breakin' 3 being cancelled and they ended up giving King Solomon's Mine to some actress named Sharon Stone.

Interesting. I saw that she was in a movie called Breakin’ and I plan to check that out at some point.

Well no. However, most people reported not using the 3D or using it sparingly which is why Nintendo introduced the 2DS and XL model.

Really? Everyone I knew who had a 3DS loved using it. I normally set mine to half way though. I can see that it might make some people sick though. I personally never had that problem.

The games that made use of it looked really good in 3D but I get that some studios couldn’t be bothered with it. The Zelda games, MK7 and Starfox were probably some of my favourites.

If foldable phones become more popular, or when apple releases one, the 3DS will be more easily emulated by the masses. Emulating DS and 3DS on my Fold 5 is easy and looks better than the original hardware. Granted, you're paying more than $300 for it but it is a solution if you already have a foldable.

Does it do the 3D effect as well? That would probably be the hardest part to emulate I think.

  5. I think I am going to hang up my controller (well Analogue Pocket) on Star Soldier. I don't like to give up on games but I know when to admit defeat (I also don't have enough time in my life to grind a very average game out).

Star Soldier was released a few years after the release of the Famicom and was a pretty big success in Japan. It was released later on the NES and didn't do so well. I can see why.

Star Soldier looks pretty dated now and even for a NES game it didn't really look that amazing compared to the likes of Gradius or Salamander. The levels feel repetitive and look similar.

The main hook or "killer feature" was that your ship could go under some of the terrain. Sounds interesting in theory but in practice it is a nightmare and just adds to the difficulty. It is hard to tell what terrain you can and can't go under so you could be blasting some enemies only to find yourself now under terrain then you reappear near more enemies. You also can't shoot when you're under terrain. It just ends up being a mess and confusing.

This game is notorious for being difficult. I don't know where this ranks on the NES difficulty scale but I can only imagine it is up there. You get three lives and can earn a few more with points but there's no continues. Added to the difficulty is the fact that your starting weapon sucks, if you die past where the upgrades are you're essentially stuck with your starter weapon for the rest of the level and if you don't beat the boss in a certain time you go back to the start.

There are a few hidden items through the game which would be fun if they also didn't come attached with annoying conditions like having the digit in the 1000's place and the 100's place being the same number.

With that said. I didn't absolutely loathe my time with this game. It was ok. I managed to consistently get to level 5 and felt done with the game. I don't really think it is a game worth playing with all the amazing options out there, but there's worse games out there that you could be wasting your time with.

    4.5/10

I think the term modern gaming is always moving and can't be considered static. PS2 and GC would now fall into the classic/retro/old/whatever term you want to call it realm now. Each era will have different styles, but it definitely isn't modern gaming.

It's a lot like film. You wouldn't call a movie from the 50's modern but it's definitely miles different from a movie from the 20's.

  7. I watched Ninja III last night and I have to say, this is a strong start to the B grade movie club.

It's fast paced and never feels like it drags. It has classic 80's B grade acting and the soundtrack and style are great. The opening has to be one of coolest B grade movie openings I've ever seen. So over the top and funny.

The martial arts are a really strong point in this movie. I did some research after watching it and wasn't surprised to read that the actor was an expert in a lot of different forms of martial arts.

The cinematography and directing were well done and captured all the action perfectly. I really liked some of the shots towards the end in the desert.

The acting was your standard B grade acting. I liked the main actress, she wasn't great, but she did a pretty good job with the role. The cop actors were rather bad though.

I looked into the budget for this movie and it was roughly $2mil, which is a decent size for a B grade movie in the 80's, but they have grossed around $7mil, so a pretty good return I'd say.

On the Reed movie scale I'd probably give this about 6.5-7.

I prefer the GBA version for both

I agree with SMB3 but not with SMW, I still prefer the SNES version a tiny bit more.

SMB3 with the extra Ecard levels is the best way to play SMB3 imo. Looks amazing and plays great. The new levels are some of the best Mario levels I’ve played.

SMW colours are a bit messed up on the GBA which I didn’t really like. The save anytime was handy though.

I'm just going to play devil's advocate bc I am a big fan of the 3DS but still can justify the prices we see here in the states for a console.

Idk if youve played most most of these games, but it's gotta be bc of the RPG aspect. The I guess as far as Kirby games they're good. Zelda remakes could be emulated on anything else that isn't a 240p screen? Idk if there are any QOL aspects for the games but they didn't wow me. The Mario & Luigi remakes I actually forgot about but they didn't do particularly well upon release. The Pokemon games were poorly received. I liked XY but SM were not good. Maybe compared to how shit they got on the Switch? Do people actually play Yokai games? Honestly idk it to be a popular series here. I bought Castlevania at launch and it was a let down.

I bought around 50 games on in release or close to it so maybe compared to the current Gen they hold up since the current iterations of most of these series are so poorly done?

Biggest games for me are 3D land,  Mario kart 7 (better than 8), Pokemon XY, Dragonball Fusion, Kid Icarus, NES Remix, Mario Maker, Smash 4, Metroid Federation Force.

I'm not a big RPG guy so I honestly dk what they have to offer. I heard good things about the SMT games but vividly remember those sitting in clearance bins for $10-15 for ages.

Definitely the opposite for me. Love all those games I listed and thought Sun & Moon had a great story and tried something a little different. It’s my favourite modern Pokemon game. Not sure about Yokai Watch popularity but I enjoyed it a lot.

The Zelda games have 3D which can’t be replicated and they’re portable.

The RPGs are great on the system but if you don’t like RPGs then that is quite a lot of games you wouldn’t be playing and that is a big draw to the library.

I would love for someone who is paying these prices to convince me the console is worth the cost of admission.

I couldn’t tell you why someone is paying $300 for a console (they go for way cheaper here so must just be a US thing) but I can see why people are jumping into the console. It has a killer library.

Mario 3D land, Kirby games, remakes of Zelda games and a link between worlds, SMT games, a lot of great FE games, decent Pokemon games, professor Layton, remakes of Mario & Luigi games, MK7, Etrian Odyssey, yokai watch, Luigi’s Mansion 1 & 2, castlevania mirror of fate and I could keep going but that alone would keep someone very busy.

  11. I give it a 9/10. It's a great game but it really is a step down after SMB3. The levels are fun but they don't have anything on SMB3 and SMB1 imo.

I'm replaying Yoshi's Island on the GBA and I'm actually starting to think that Yoshi's Island may even beat out SMW. That game looks amazing, has a better variety of levels, the bosses are fun and all different and if you're trying to collect everything it is pretty challenging.

Okay so I played a bunch of Diddy Kong Racing.... But figured I would "beat the game" and complete the adventure mode. Didn't seem to insane to attempt.... BUT WHY IN THE SWEET JESUS LORD IN FUCKING HELL is the silver coin bullshit so annoyingly hard????

There's 2 levels I can't get.... The town in Frosty Village took me forever, too, fuck. A couple of them too were ridiculous, in Windmill Plains no matter what I did the computer would ALWAYS be too far in front to reach.... but I managed to get them except the last 2 in the Dragon Forest. Greenwood Village.... can't do it. 🙈

And yeah, the racing is cool, probably fun with friends.... but the Adventure mode itself is fucking annoying. 🤬

I 100% this game when I was 14. You can do it!

It is actually a pretty hard game though, it starts off so easy then becomes brutal. Wizpig #2 is very difficult. I spent a week learning that race.

I hereby submit that I will make a concerted effort to watch the movies put forward in this club.

You need to join a regular movie club with all the stuff Reed posts in the movie debate threads before you can even think about watching B movies 😂

Just kidding, hope you can watch a few.

Chris Hemsworth was funnier than anything in Afterlife.  Which is ironic considering the woman cast.  My biggest complaint is they wasted Kristen Wiig in the straight (wo)man role.  That's not her groove.

Yes but he isn't the whole movie, it's Ghostbusters not The Kevin movie. The movie overall just wasn't funny to me and it wasn't well written.

They shrunk the budget for Afterlife.  Pretty much the only reason since the reviews and box office were about the same.

Afterlife was alright.  Basically carried by Paul Rudd, who I find funny,

Well that would be another plus to Afterlife. Had a smaller budget to work with and still managed to get a sequel and generally favorable reviews on open.

I like Paul Rudd in it and he was funny but I think that the teens actually did a really good job in it and it felt like a better continuation of the series then some bad reboot.
