Good priorities overall. I think the ones you "aren't likely to play" you'll probably be fine without. I think The Sims and Minecraft are both monumental games that any video game fans owe some familiarity with, but like - if you don't think it's your thing, it definitely won't be your thing.
Skipping Civilization 4 makes sense as long as you're playing any other Civ game. They are all pretty much the same, but everyone should play at least one.

Look forward to System Shock 2 and Fez! Somehow these seem like the biggest two omissions on your list to me. Mario Galaxy 2 is fun sure, but if you played 1, you know what you're getting. Day of the Tentacle is probably my favourite adventure game, but if you got the MI games and Grim Fandango down, you're quite set.

I'm surprised how much of that list I did play. It didn't seem like I'd be someone who'd played World of Warcraft, Pokemon, or Modern Warfare, but somehow I did. And definitely a lot more than either of them deserve if you ask me

Here's the full list of games in the top 200 that I didn't play. I guess that leaves me at 168 that I did. Sorted roughly by how "relevant" I feel the game is, based on its reputation:

1. X-Com: UFO
2. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (Series)

4. Outer Wilds (literally in my 2024 backlog list)
5. Persona 4
6. Persona 5 (P4 and 5 in the list, but not 2 and 3 which are the ones I did play :P)
7. Papers, Please (literally just fired up the title screen, but I don't think that should count)
8. Ultima Online (kinda too late for this one)
9. Zork (at least I think I haven't played it, I'm not sure if my familiarity with it is second-hand or first)
10. Elite (I might have fired this up in the past and had no idea what to do)
11. Burnout 3
12. EverQuest
13. Baldur’s Gate II (played the first game, and it was extremely boring)
14. X-Com: Enemy Unknown (been on my backlog list several times in the past, never got around to it)
15. Untitled Goose Game (bought this for my gf when she was having her "geese are fun" phase, but we never tried it )
16. StarCraft II
17. Fortnite
18. League of Legends
19. Overwatch (I've seen footage of this game and I have absolutely no clue what's going on)
20. Dota 2
21. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
22. Tecmo Bowl (Series)

24. Gran Turismo 3 (I played the PS3 one quite a bit and really liked it, I feel like that supersedes GT3, doesn't it?)

27. GTA: San Andreas (why are the GTA games listed separately on this list, they are basically all the same)
28. Left 4 Dead 2 (played the demo of the first game and found nothing appealing about it)
29. Rocket League
30. Red Dead Redemption 2 (I loved the first game, but pretty much everyone seems to agree RDR2 is garbage)
31. Madden NFL Football (Series)
32. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (I thought Pandora Tomorrow was the one everyone liked, I played that one!) 

Also I played through the demos of Mass Effect 2, L4D, Dead Space, Destiny, and Deus Ex (and the first episode of Walking Dead), but never played the full games, which I guess still qualifies as having played them. I think Deus Ex so far is the best bet at an actual "everyone should play" game that I for some reason still haven't really played. At the time I guess I was just disappointed it wasn't System Shock 2

Also Tony Hawk and X-Com are definitely games that come off as iconic "must play" titles to me, but they are kinda outside of genres I'm likely to dig. I feel pretty fine not having played the rest of this list.

Yeah I know what you meant, it's just hard to really think of what they are.  It's easy to think of the ones I have played.

The list Reed linked seems like a good springboard, I'll go through that.

The Witness, like Braid before it, made me think in completely new ways I've never done before to solve the problems presented in the game. The game looks really basic - but like I said recently in my comparison to Talos Principle, the way the entire game is meticulously hand crafted for one singular purpose (whatever it may be) is just something that can  subtly elevate a game above anything else of its kind.

Baba is You is the newest 10/10 on my "list". When I first completed it, I rated it a 9, but the more I think about it, the more I realise how much the game just manages to showcase pure excellent puzzle design at the absolute best it can. If a game of this sorts makes you think about the puzzles you left behind while in bed and trying to sleep, and if you actually start solving them while you aren't even playing, that says a lot about the effect it has on you.

Obra Dinn is a game that I appreciate a lot more than my objective rating communicates. The puzzle design has its flaws, and it rewards brute forcing. The story, as you uncover it, really loses its steam after the initial shocking reveals early on. But man, the game should be forever cherished for being basically the only existing game of a type that should be much more prevalent. And its look and style is fantastic, really elevates it to something special.

Tunic is basically Fez 2. The puzzle aspect of it, in the context of this debate, is really good, but hard to even discuss without spoiling things. My biggest gripes with the game is that it's trying to do too many different things and never really maintains focus.

I don't understand why anyone would prefer an NES controller to the SNES one which is much easier on the hands, and does diagonals better, but is otherwise just as tight and responsive. But personal preference is what it is - I'm still fond of the NES controller as well, so it's a fair stance.

However, SMB3 on SNES controls *exactly* like the NES version.  If I remember correctly, the gameplay code is basically unchanged thanks to the SNES CPU's backwards compatibility.

Won't spoil anything if you didn't, but to me it's kind of where the whole game really comes together. But it's pretty obscure to find, so I'll drop a hint if you haven't.

I enjoy cycling but I'd never do it just for fun. For me, it's just generally the most practical way to get around

Not familiar with the GG version, but the Master System game is a completely different game from the MegaDrive one.

Yeah, most of the time it's not strictly necessary, and you can even get away with kinda mashing the parry button, since it doesn't leave you open, you just do a block instead. But you'd definitely enjoy the game a lot more if you adapted to it.

That BJ scene just bothers me so much because it's a massive step down from the rest of the movie, it's extremely cringey and embarassing. It's interesting to learn that it's a part of a longer segment that got excised, because that probably explains why they didn't just excise that scene.
People talk a lot about Ghostbusters being a "perfect" movie, but it has quite a few low points like that, and that's a specific example of a scene where if you just remove it entirely, the rest would still feel intact and be a better movie for it.
