Is there an argument here?  We're both agreeing support is (relatively) high for a ill-advised/disastrous campaign where it's pretty black and white as to who the bad guy is.

But any polling coming out of Russia has to have caveats attached.  And any video has to be recognized as potential propaganda.

It seems like Mr. Headlines can't keep up with a one on one conversation, but you got to admire his skills at cruising through the experts' opinions.

A few remarks about point pressing and how I performed in that run :

I completely messed up the 4th stage point pressing because I only remembered an important thing when I was going through the 4th loop. After you get through the butterflies thingy phase, you should have your kill count at 4. Then, you have to get to 10 kills, and not kill anyone else before a knife thrower appears. You kill him for your 11th kill, and only then the next tall guy is your 12th 5000 points kill. After that you can go for the boss, and resume point pressing.

My 5th stage 4th loop shows the reward of successfully point press the 5th stage in general, cause if you manage to beat the boss and still have the 5000 points bonus on for every 12 kills, there's no more knife thrower showing up once you beat the boss (except if you left a knife thrower behind, which would be the only one left to beat, as it is the case in my run).

Nice. Your one life score is about the same as I was able to achieve in practice before the contest. Hopefully I can do it again but I keep choking. For some reason I'm playing worse now than I did when my scores didn't matter.

Thanks man! I'm sure you'll find a way to get a higher score before the end of the week. Sometimes it is annoying how doing a score that matters  can affect our performance, but there's usually always one run, at the very least, to save it all for the whole week.

Ok, you have to submit an unofficial score, even if it isnt before this ends. The fact that this is achievable to you is ridiculous. Cant imagine surviving pressing that much

Edit: or surviving that far at all really. The bosses seem to get so much harder post loop 2.

whelp, 3rd boss kills me in one kick/hit, so nope, not this game.......participation it is!

Sorry to skinny for being a share bear here, but the strat for 3rd boss is you go directly at him with a jump kick, you try to land as close to him as possible in the process, and you finish him with low punches (or kicks?). You must have more than half your health to make it a sure shot, as if he kicks you in the process you will lose half+ of your total health bar.

I could try to record a video! I'm not saying that I'll get a run where I succeed to point press in all stages of the first 3 loops, but it would definitely show that I'm trying somehow to do it. 1 life rule make it harder for survival as well, I only played 4 lives contest in the past.

Oh, and as we all know, stage 2 point pressing is not with the 12th enemy but by exploiting the dragons / balls in the air / snake vases phase. I use to burn my extra lives at the stage 2 of 4th loop IIRC, and then just hope I survive the most stages after that.

On levels with mostly tall guys, youd be surprised how quick you can get 12 guys beat going back and forth at the end. If you have time and energy, try to squeeze in that last 5000, or two, right before you cross the line.

I wouldn't be surprised as it is what I do 🙂

I always try to jump kick the 12th enemy I kill, and if I don't mess up (shit happens, and sometimes you get fucked with two knife throwers on the 12th count), I beat the boss ASAP and use all the time left to get more 5000 bonus by jump kicking the 12th enemy.

As the loops add up it gets harder and harder to do it consistently, especially on the 4th and 5th stage, but in the 3 first loops I try to point press the 5000 bonus in all stages, if everything goes well naturally.

So who's got the strategy tips?

I thought it was good to run down the clock knocking guys out, but I'm pretty consistently scoring a few thousand higher by trying to get through levels as fast as possible.

Full health at the end of a stage is worth 5000 points bonus.

If you jumpkick every 12th gripper they are worth 1000(?) points.

Tom toms (kids) are worth 500 points if you knock them out with a jump when they try to jump on your head.

The enemies that fall from the ceiling on the 2nd floor are worth the same points whether you punch or kick them.

If the timer runs out (TIME 0000), it's the end of Thomas.

It is only worth running down the clock if you kept jump kicking every 12th enemies for a bonus 5000 points. If you missed one of them, you can't get the bonus anymore and it is best to just go straight to the end once the boss is out of the way.

Man, Kung Fu has everything for competitions:

    -Allows pause after death
    -shows score on pause
-shows game mode -A- or -B- on screen
-shows how many loops completed (Dragon icon) on screen
    -saves high score
    -loops indefinitely
-loops get more difficult (from what I've seen so far)
-only a single 1up granted (at 50k pts) so no stockpiling lives to last forever

And best of all, the sound effects of kicking and punching are awesome, as is the little background ditty!

My only real gripe is that there are not enough digits in the score.  It's only a matter of time until mbd9000 wraps this bad boy...

An extra digit would make wonder here. At the least, it is easy to track rolled scores with progression by seeing the loop you're in (thanks to that dragon icon).

I looked up some of this stuff and it seems pretty clear to me that ruling it out entirely is going to invalidate every run.

    - If there is an enemy on the right side of the screen and you move to the left you will de-spawn it.  (it could not be easier to do this entirely by accident.)

    - Hitting start at any point in the air will advance the character forward slightly.  (this is annoying because the air is often the best place to switch powers, as it's being done on the fly and this is speed-running after all.)

    - Shooting 1 Bubble, 3 Metal Blades or 7 Boomerangs and then accessing the powers menu results in no ammo being consumed.  (so once again, you hit start at the wrong time and your run is invalidated.)

    - Pausing the game more than once as a bullet hits mega man causes the bullet to go through with no damage. (pretty much the same deal here.)

So, you hit start or left at the wrong time, you shoot the wrong number of shots and then access the menu or pause a couple of times while being shot and the whole run is potentially invalidated.

For a couple of examples I'm posting a link to a botched run I just made in which I happened to access the menu during a drop at 7:29 and then at 7:47 I hit left while trying to shoot one of those fan guys which de-spawned him.  This is probably the most annoying part of Airman stage because you're trying to shoot the fan guy who's blowing wind at you making the pit of doom in front of you a death trap, and you've got birds flying through.  It's super easy to de-spawn this guy by accident and I highly doubt that this is a rare type of event for this game.

Mega man 2 speed runs are either zipping or no zipping so I get that.  Zipping would be a bit much and ruin the fun for most contestants so no zipping makes sense and your chances of zipping by accident are probably in the ballpark of 10,000 to 1.  BUT THIS OTHER STUFF HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AS PART OF A NORMAL RUN.

Seems to me there ought to be some middle ground between invalidating every run or having unequal standards for players "A" and "B"; And just allowing the player to shamelessly manipulate the game the whole way.

I think that de-spawning enemies on purpose should be allowed IMO, I'm not sure what you guys think but this sounds like a great tactic for a speedrun to me.

Using start to either dodge a bullet, advancing the character, or using no ammo on bubble/metal/boomerangs should all be ruled out only if a player clearly abuse of it. Stuff like :

Casually pressing start button while in the air to change weapons and such = Allowed

Using the start button many times in a row to avoid falling into a hole = invalidate your run

Abusing start button to dodge bullets in order to stay alive = invalidate your run

Dodge a bullet accidentally by pressing start at the right moment = Tolerated

Strategically pressing start numerous times in your run to avoid using ammo = invalidate your run

    Thoughts?

Just throwin' in out there this may require a specific list of do-nots.  I presume this means NO ZIPPING, but from what I've seen there seem to be a lot of little things in this game that may or may not be considered "a glitch."

    No zipping

No using menu screen to extend your jump

Do you have anything else to mention in that kind of stuff?

Remember smashing a whole roll of caps with a rock?

This is literally my childhood in a nutshell.

It also reminds me how my neighbor friend liked to combine firesteel from lighters to make a small explosion. Man, that kid was so silly and reckless, one time I saw him using a vice in order to hit bullets with a hammer to make them explode. That and making gasoline fire circles in his father's garage, getting the gasoline can catch on fire many times. First time I was sure as hell that the whole place was going to explode, learnt that it does not explode if the can is already open, lol. By any means, not kid stuff to recreate with your kids 🙃

Friendly February reminder about our charms for 2020 and 2021.  You don't want to be falling a full three years behind:

The 2020 and 2021 Charms are on their way my good man, we've been on this thing since January. The icons are all made up and ready, we're just waiting for them to be actually implemented in the Charms distribution bank so we can hand them out. I'll try to haste things up with the other staff members involved, as it is just awfully true that they're long overdue at this point.

Fair enough. That is my bad. So im curious why “Fauci is in the pocket of the ccp” is allowed in a non political thread?  It looks like its ambiguous enough, but of course someone had to call me out on my phrasing. Everyone knew what I meant though.

I don't think it is an appropriate statement for this thread either, at least without further explanations to demonstrate how one would come to this conclusion, be it a reasonable statement or not. I'd also add that criticizing or praising Fauci's statements/policies here is definitely allowed, as long as it is not just blanket statements and it comes with developed arguments. Not agreeing 100 % with Fauci is not a stance exclusive to Fox News or right wing propaganda, you can criticize Fauci from a progressive point of view just as well (and vice versa). But, Ideally, leaving alone any political affiliations is the way to argue opinions and ideas in this thread, even though I recognize that it is hard to  do sometimes as these subjects are usually served to us politically charged by mainstream medias (but we are better than them, aren't we 😉).

Anyway, the point of my post was really about reminding you, but also everyone else at the same time, that this was not the political thread, cause you were literally saying that it was (while I fully understand that it was just a fair error from you saying so).

  16. Hey everyone!

It's already this time of the year, when Bea and I get our old bones at work and try to organize another year of VGS NES Weekly Contest for everyone to enjoy! As always, we want to give the chance to everyone to say their piece about what they'd expect for this season. Any kind of discussions are fully welcome, be it to make games/rules suggestions, offer any kind of idea about the structure of the season, the tournament, the point system and ranking etc., criticisms of whatever you feel could be better for the contest, anything you feel like getting off your chest before Bea's reign of discipline comes into play!

So let's put our collective brains at work and see what kind of juice we can squeeze out of this thread for the glory of the 2022 season!

Yeah, it's quite significant because you could just kill yourself quickly at the start of any stage and "beat" a guy who got all the way to the boss of the same stage; and what's more, this game actually numbers the bosses as if they were levels, so every single section of the game has a stage number, for example Joker is 5-3, while the boss right before him is 5-2, making it extremely easy to keep track of individual progress...

True, just like GnG, Ninja_Gaiden. etc. It is how it should be ruled.,
