NA room going strong. Long live Phil Collins.

Very happy to see you all keeping it around, even if I only had a chance to visit for 5 minutes.

I went last year and was blown away.  It was my first video game convention, so I don't have anything to compare it to though.  I thought the free play arcade & console area and the vendor hall had so much it was overwhelming (in a great way.)  There was always something going on or something to do.  I never imagined in my life that I would see the Mortal Kombat actors/characters on stage together singing covers of pop songs, but hot dog did they ever.  Never a dull moment. I'd like to go back, but we'll see how the old schedule shakes out.

The coolest thing at the show last year was the department store mockup with all the old displays and demo cabinets.  I believe it was an old NA group that did it.  It really felt like you were transported back to any electronics department in the 90's.  Thank you again to that guy/group.  You could really tell that one was a labor of love.

I also loved to see all the CRT's still running and not in a landfill.  Show your CRT's some love.

Glad you thought it was the coolest thing.  It will be there again this year (but a different year).

  3. So in case you didn't know, I created a book about The World of Nintendo. It's a visual history of Nintendo's early merchandising efforts during their heyday.

The first print sold out, and so I created a Kickstarter to reprint the first volume, but is also to fund the creation of the second volume!

So get on ordering volume 2 and volume 1 if you missed it.

    Check it out below:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wonbook/the-world-of-nintendo-book

I have to fund it in 30 days and hoping people share this as much as possible to help me reach my goal.

    Thanks!

Hey guys, I just wanted to say that the exhibit you had set up was awesome.  It really looked like you were back at a department store from years gone by.  Thank you very much for all the time and effort you put in to make it happen.  It was really something special to see.

Thanks for saying that.  It took over a day to setup and 5 hours to tear down.  But watching people enjoy it was rewarding.

I noticed 3 kinds of people who visited:

#1 Those who had no idea what was going on, but loved looking at it.

#2 Collectors who knew what everything was and shared a common interest.

#3 People who haven't been in a store like that since 1995 and didn't know if they ever would be again. And were happy to have their kids enjoy it.

I was really trying to cater to the #3 group of people, but did not expect such a positive response.  I lost count of the people who got down-right emotional.  Saw tears in many an eye.  One had to leave when talking to me as he couldn't hold it together.

Here is are some pics on imgur with some comments.  Sorry they aren't good. I should've brought a DSLR.

So reading the samples I see this is clearly about their merchandising arm of the company and the centerpiece of all the various displays, racks, props, dangling signs and more largely around World of Nintendo but other earlier/after stuff too and NP magazine included.  is that why this stops in 1990 and doesn't go deeper into the early 90s when they still would crank out some stuff like for the top loader era?

And since a SNES book is fully planned, how will this work out differently since there was no Super World of Nintendo program going on, largely just more displays and kiosks.

Covers other aspects like Promotions and the World Class Service.  But yes this is merchandising.

The reason it doesn't go past 1990 is it is sequential and I wanted to cover as much as possible without making a gigantic book with information overload.   There is a clear breaking point at the end of 1990 where SNES starts to pickup.  And the company goes through some changes.

The World of Nintendo program goes well through the SNES era into around 1996.  The next volume will be about that too.

And Howard Phillips. Honestly I'd love a deep dive book into Miyamoto, Tezuka, and other early Nintendo R&D members.

    Have you read Ask Iwata?

I heard Ask Iwata was more business oriented, but maybe I should read it anyway.

I find Nintendo's heyday much more interesting.

Howard Phillips wrote lots of stuff.  Never heard of Cthulhu? 😉

Seriously though Howard is writing a book:
