I've always imagined some group of preservationists will set up a fake Xbox Live/PSN to download updates, at least once there is enough interest in replaying these games. It could be a real long ways off though. Insignia Project is recreating original Xbox Live, although that's in early stages.

For 90% of games there's a site where you can get the best-playing, most up to date version of these games though called steampowered.com.

Nice...I just realized you meant steam.

So apparently this latest possible future crisis with the internal PS3/PS4 battery isn't as simple as just getting it replaced?  I mean I hope if nothing else they always allow you to connect the PS3 to synchronize the internal clock and update your trophy card at least.

Luckily on the PS3 front I was a very late, pretty much last minute adopter and got mine in 2016, the last of the Super Slim models...surely the battery should still be good for what, at least another ten years or so?

I don't see this as a difficult issue. I would bet once the server check gets reverse engineered, someone could manufacture a dongle for the network port that mimics a network and the psn servers for check in after a battery change.

I suspect fans will come through and find a way to get patches out eventually, as usual. Since most people just collect and shelve it I don't think most will care, but it sucks for sure.

Yea, I agree, I just wonder how many patches will be lost to the ether. We probably won't really know until years from now.

I didn't know about that site. I'll check it out!

  5. With the store closing, many are anticipating physical price increases, which makes sense. However,  with the recent news about some games no longer being able to download patches, what does that mean for collecting PS3

Personally for me, I see people still dealing in physical from a collector or nostalgia perspective but for playing these games, downloading patches and iso's for hacked systems is the future of playing them.  Thoughts? (Yes, I do see this as my moral excuse to download all the roms I want without owning a physical copy 😃)

It did work a little bit. It definitely looks better now.

Also, guys, I was wondering what cable you’re using for your Xbox console. I currently have the Pound HDMI cable which MetalJesusRocks’ video convinced me to buy. Are there better options out there that do not cost too much ?

I tried that but didn't like how dark it made the picture.  Was unplayable in my mind because I had one in high-school (I can remember how its supposed to look). I eventually got an OSSC with the original hidef pack. It looks great on my 4k now.

  7. That's an interesting thought exercise.  On one hand, a large portion of buyers buy for nostalgia now, but in 30 years, that won't be the case for Nes or Genesis.  It'll be more like atari. On the other hand, IPs that are still alive may still be collectable,  in the way old comic books still remain collectable.  So....who knows?

  8. I don't see an issue with investing.  Not my purpose personally but at the same time,  I could just download roms instead of buying cib genesis/ sega cd games. If you only care about playing,  repros or roms on a flashcard are all you need.  If you are still buying the original media, you're lying to yourself if you think you're only buying to play.  I'm buying the original media because there is something tactile and enjoyable about getting my own copy of the rom for a flash cart. I also enjoy knowing my $80 lightening force won't lose value sitting on the shelf. Not investing,  but it's close enough that I can't be a gate keeper and complain about the "investors".

So the 3ds uses the proprietary .cia format. Games, updates, and DLC all use this format. The 3ds homebrew community has created an application known as FBI to install .cia files (lol) without the use of the eShop. I currently have the majority of first-party updates and DLC archived, and I'm working on collecting them for the entire set. I'll likely release it when Nintendo takes the eShop down and there is no other way to access this content.

    Nice!

  10. This thread finally got me to pull the trigger on a refurbished 3ds from Nintendo.  Also ordered shovel knight, nes remix, and super Mario 3d land. I'm going to play this in bed and on lunchbreaks, casually collect because I'm trying to focus on other systems right now.

I've got this thing about buying old hardware,  i hate dealing with issues.  So I want to snag a few in good shape before its too difficult.  I've been thinking about the same thing with Vita even if I don't want to collect the games right now.

  11. This game is great.  I'm really enjoying it. The way the creature moves and eats people is super satisfying.  The controls can be difficult towards the end.  I might try my pro controller on the TV to see if that makes the end game any easier.

Anything meant to be played on a CRT.

If you can't plug and play a game system with a new TV, I consider it retro. All of the effort I've had to put into having an original xbox working on my 4k TV tells me its not a modern console. Component cables and an OSSC are pricey. Pound cable was a disappointment.  The blacks were so bad in Halo I found it unplayable.

Also,  I was surprised by how bad these games look and play compared to modern 3d games. Not at all how I remember them from highschool.  So they may be in a different category from 2d consoles, but they definitely are not modern.
