Left over flux is my guess as well.  Not sure how it ages as I never see it "new".  But it always has a little bit of a nasty look to me as it provides a slightly tacky surface so dust clings to it.  Some times it's a little discolored.  But that is the nature of flux and not a sign of anything bad.  I personally love a board cleaned of flux.

Pretty sweet that you got a factory sticker with the date on it.  That puppy is a couple years older than me.  I wouldn't mind a heavy sixer but I love my Darth Vader 2600.

The flux feels like wood varnish, very dry and not sticky at all so I left it there.

Yeah, I'm thinking about preserving the labels, not sure how yet. They are just barely glued to the ABS. I like the "factory reconditioned" sticker also.

Pro-tip,  if you use a secured (https) website link then you won't have this issue.  Check out my photo is all it's nastiness...

Cleaning these devices is like a therapy, specially when it's old but still in good shape. I have a thing for bringing old abandoned things back to use/life, restoration and such. Feels good.

I think a better idea would be to create some sort of database similar to what Nintendoage had for SNES games and have a more uniform display of pictures in that format.

I have a "Zelda 2 - The Adventure of Link" CIB to post, have you decided on a standard for the pictures?

  3. I'm cleaning this 2600 light sixer and noticed this sweet like substance on it's boards. I think it may be a leftover soldering substance but also could be some kind of anti-rust protection.

Should I remove it with isopropylic alcohol?

Probably just make the schema flexible using JSON with the ability to add metadata as needed

I'll use json, for sure. Amazing spec. The hardest part is making a "build system" for free form inputs. Totally doable at a later time.

I'll begin with adding items to the collection and go from there.

  6. The next few weeks I'll be busy but I already found a game database and I'm collecting (damn) all the information you're giving me.

Up to now, the primary need is avoiding buying duplicates, followed by metadata (where it was bought, how much was paid, variation specific info) and then collection value.

Maybe, I'll add a ordering generator: it will suggest how you should order them in your shelf, by title, year, publisher, genre and so on. In my mind it would be awesome

The most difficult would be fcgamer's use case but I think it's doable.

Regrettably, GVN still. I'd move to price charting but my attempted import only brought in about 75% of my collection and I'm not interested in entering the hundreds of others it misses.

What GVN lacks that made you try exporting it to price charting? What feature neither have that you'd need/like?

  8. I'm considering building a system focused on hardcore collectors. Cartridges would have information like seal type (the round/oval thing), hangtab, 3/5 screws and so on... Maybe a nice data base with the title's/system's release date, publisher and so on.... Also some financial history like how much was paid for the item and whatever people think it's worth maintaining for later reference.

But it's more of a personal project while I learn this stuff (I always hated frontend development but I gotta catch up).

  9. I asked them and I got this reply. Just saving you 10 days waiting for their reply.

    Hi,

Yes, you can definitely submit the factory sealed case as is, and we will carefully remove the games for grading. You will need to create a form for all the games in the box, and leave a note on the order that you would like all of the games removed from the case for grading.

As far as having the seller ship them directly to us that would have to be arranged with the seller and they would have to include your submission form.

    Take care,

I think the AVGN is somewhat misunderstood as a genuine reviewer as opposed to him being a parody of a reviewer, focusing mainly on the shitty aspects of the games that he touches. He needs to find things to get him angry about to live up to his title.

You got to take his reviews with a grain of salt, as I reckon half of the games he reviews aren’t necessarily all that bad (for the 80s). Still, he is an absolute comic genius!

I don't understand how people can't understand it's a damn character. It's for comedy and entertainment.

The character may review a good game as if it was a bad one. And that's fucking ok.

    my god.

It's a CRT right? It looks like it would be perfect for retro stuff.

Yes, it's CRT and slim, which saves some space. I'm not into the technical specifications that makes a tv suitable for retrogaming...

It has RF, RGB and video component inputs, this is all I know that's wanted in one of these.
