Oof that’s got to be brutal these days.  When I was focusing on piecing back together my stuff a few years ago after I drunkenly sold some of it I considered seeing how far I could get on the variant set but I looked at doing like King‘s Quest and noped out of that idea pretty quickly lol.  Good luck to you though.  Considered trying to snag a copy of Space Hulk or anything?

Yes, it's definitely pricier now. If a copy pops up I will certainly be trying my best to get it!

That’s such a cool piece to add to the set.

Did you keep any of the old set or did you start completely from scratch?

I started from scratch again. Luckily there were things I missed the first time around that I have been more diligent about getting more  complete copies. I was able to buy back my sealed copy of A-Train from the guy I sold my collection to so I could have that variant checked off my list.

  3. Hello! I need some help from our resident historians:

Since I'm currently focused on rebuilding my long box collection, I've been really interested in making this new collection more special than the first. Well, I snagged a new "GRAIL!!!" for my small assortment of long box games. I  was super excited to have gotten this! The seller told me he used to work at Konami and this was a sample long box case from Sony to give publishers an example of the box dimensions for how art and packaging might work.

I have been chatting with Jason from Gamerave.com (who has always been super nice and helpful) and he's told me these were also used in the first trade trade show displays Sony had to debut the PS1 and get companies interested in the system. He said there is a picture of that trade show booth/display that has these in the background out there, but I'm really struggling with finding it on Google. Anybody else have any interesting info? Or maybe that picture to add more context to this?

    Thanks!

Apologies for the delay, but i took some photos to show the connections and hopefully explain how it all hooks up, its hard to take a photo to show it all.

    BUT FIRST, THE KEY!

    Original Xbox Kiosk Key LINK

So that should be good for just about all the original xbox kiosks... again unless someones swapped the locks.

now, i tried to take some photos and put together a horrible little diagram of how i have things hooked up.

    image.jpeg.bd56d4fa40af1b958e8cd639c343273c.jpeg

So, i'll start with the xbox cable... it's a modified cable... and it plugs into the xbox like a normal AV cable, but it not only has the standard RCA but also an 8 pin connector.  That 8 pin connector connects to the one side of the APU.  The RCA's connect to the TV.  ( i dont bother with the video signal, just do the audio for now).

The APU has 4 connectors, the 8 PIN coming from the xbox, then a small headphone jack style plug which is what goes to the reset button.  An S-Video Output, and the DC Input.

Here's a closup of the reset button.  it's a standard arcade looking button which hits the switch and leads to the headphone looking jack.

For the DC input thats a fairly standard plug.  The S-video is also just a standard s-video cable.

    and thats about it.

what i'd love to do someday is figure if it's possible to duplicate this APU unit and make copies for folks.  looking at the circuit board it doesn't seem that crazy, but i'm not an expert in that.

Let me know if this helps or not!

This should be the lock, right?

All my locks need to be replaced...

    Hey All,

A month late to the party, but i happened to be googling around when i stumbled upon this thread and thought i'd sign up and spread the joy of owning this kiosk...  I acquired this kiosk back in December, had it delivered in March and have been obsessed with it ever since.  In order to get it to the basement, i basically stripped it down piece by piece to get it down there, while cleaning it up and even replacing all the screws with new versions.   So i feel like a bit of an expert on this beast.

One of the bottom tubes had its lower LED wire torn off, so i spent a few days rewiring all of the LEDs just to upgrade the wiring and ensure they were all good.  I've also spent the past month or two modding the snot out of my xbox... still a work in progress but getting closer!

To answer some questions that were posted already, here's a photo of the box that came with mine for the power unit

I dont have the best photo of the AV cable, but it's a modified cable

    image.png.fbbb8d9c9c82b809b98cfc124a4bd590.png

One thing i noticed is that plugging in the button which does the reset, it has to be plugged in very tightly, otherwise mine would restart if I bumped the kiosk... so starting any game and handling the controller would cause it to restart, but i just had to make sure it's really plugged in all the way. and it's been good.

As far as Keys go... they are actually dirt cheap if you know where to look.  and i'm not sure the rules about posting links, so to save on that, there's a company out there called ultimate security devices.  if you google them, then search their site for "1001 Mini tubular (barrel ) key"... you'll find them for like 4 bucks.   Now the site says they are on back order, but i ordered 6 and they shipped them out that day.  got them a few days later and they were perfect.  These keys are supposed to be good for all US based original xbox kiosks, but it does depend on if someone swapped the locks or not on your kiosk as folks tend to do that.

I could go on and on, but this is my first post so i'll stop the novel there.  Feel free to shoot any other questions my way!  I'll do my best to answer what i can!

Great info and thanks for posting! So does the AV cable connect to the reset button? I'm confused how that all hooks up and functions...

Wow that is awesome! It's never even crossed my mind to get into that top box compartment. I guess one day I'll have to drill it out as well to replace the bulb.

I don't have that "The Xbox Advantage" sticker, along with two of the three on the back of yours. Really cool to see!

That Property of Xbox sticker is on the CRT? So dang cool.

Yes, the sticker is on the CRT. The only other thing in the top compartment was access to the screws that hold onto the light. I'm planning to replace it with an LED because it was rusted in the front compartment where the sign is illuminated.

I re-watched your video and noticed I don't have the pin for the shelf. I'm wondering if maybe yours is aftermarket/custom since I don't even see holes for one to me installed in mine...

  7. Hello again!

I figured I'd re-reintroduce myself and try to fill you in on my absence from the collecting community. For those who may not remember me, I was a part of NintendoAge since maybe 2010 and quickly became known as the Exertainment guy as I had the 9XS and 3500 models of the SNES bikes as well as numerous accessories and stuff for the Exertainment line. I was even featured in the SNES Omnibus books under the Exertainment titles! I also focused a lot on odd-ball gaming items and had some pretty sweet pieces such as the Racermate Challenge II setup for the NES, the NES TV, the exercise bike for the Wii, GBA Visteon dockable, GBA iCard, NordicQuest, Singer Izek, and many other things.

In the summer of 2019 my family moved to Houston, TX to be closer to my wife's parents as we recently had had a baby and could use the help. Almost as soon as we got there things went downhill. We were stuck in an apartment that had roaches, leaky pipes, and neighbors that smoked weed all the time inside so our apartment reeked of the stuff because of a shared ceiling. My new job was not progressing and there was some shady stuff going on with the owners I was working for and my wife was struggling to find work. Additionally, relationships with my in-laws became strained due to differences in political and parenting ideologies. I think it was also around this time that NintendoAge got shut down and all my hard work of posts/info/pictures were lost, so that was a gut punch.

By Thanksgiving 2019 we had about $400 left in our bank account and with two kids, my collection was the thing that could get us out of the hole. I had to make a deal with a reseller from Dallas who bought my collection for 50% of it's value, but I needed cash fast and the deal got done so we were able to pay our December bills. The only thing I kept was my Switch and a couple games, but the collecting identity I had built was effectively dead inside of me. Things looked up a little bit and then something called COVID-19 put a stop to the world. We were stuck in that crappy apartment through lockdown and the following summer as we struggled to find a house in a crazy housing market. Luckily, Animal Crossing helped us keep our sanity, my wife had found work, and I switched jobs to a more stable-ish situation.

Fast forward to this past year and I had an uncle, an aunt, a childhood pet, and my best friend die (just this past May). My family members passed due to illness and old age, but my best friend decided to take his own life on an impulse the day after my kid's birthday. No warning or goodbyes to his fiance or baby, just did it. It devastated all of us as I had just talked to him less than 24hrs prior. My best friend was like a brother to me. Literally talked to him more than my own biological brother.

As I grieve that loss, I started to reminisce about how my best bro actually introduced me to the original Xbox, the Halo and COD franchises, as well as literally bought me an Xbox One just so he could play Xbox live with me during the pandemic because I had fallen on hard times. I decided to dip my toes back into the collecting scene, starting with Xbox as a way to honor his memory, and reengage with a part of my identity I lost back in 2019. It felt like a good omen as well that I happened across an Xbox kiosk to kick off my collection (pictured). I hope to get back into the groove of things with collecting and engaging with the community, but I am just taking it a step at a time for now.

Thank you for reading my story and welcoming me back. 🙂
