  1. Lord of the Sword complete.  This one is a bit of a turd for me.  Tough to play this one after Spellcaster and Kenseiden, as I find it inferior in almost every regard.  If you enjoy an action game mixed with some rpg elements, stick to Spellcaster.

I've never really enjoyed Lord of the Sword, but you can play through it slowly and it's not overly difficult.  The game is very forgiving as well, so you don't have to worry and restarting from scratch after a death.

Playing with a map is advised.  Also, there are a few hints that Sega gave away through their Sega Hints service that are pretty crucial.

This has been a lot of fun guys, I'll see you in the Sega Genesis thread once I get settled in my new place.

  2. We are running out of time unfortunately :(.  Wish I had stumbled across this thread sooner.

Zillion II is down.  Doesn't hold a candle to the first one; it's a completely different game that deviates from the original recipe that made the first Zillion so memorable for me.  Boss battles were totally manageable.  A couple of the bike stages really frustrated me - I've been playing this one on and off for the past few weeks and so I am happy to move on.

Going to try to get through Lord of Sword now.

  3. Teddy Boy complete.  The game loops every 50 levels.  There's also a bonus stage between 50 and 51, so that's where the score difference comes from.

I'd categorize this as a puzzle game with exceptional balance.  I have to give credit to the devs, there were little details that makes this such a fun and challenging game without being cheap.  Your hit box isn't very large, so you can narrowly escape death and the controls are tight.  The sprite limitation also works in your favor and I exploited it a few times through the playthrough, as if I was standing near any of the dice, I'd move away before killing another enemy.  Collecting enemy drops are critical too in later levels to avoid running out of time, as the drops will eventually start chewing away at your remaining time bar.  Finally, any platform you're standing on will eventually burn up and disappear, this added another fun mechanic to play with to funnel enemies where you want them.  There weren't many card games, but this one is at or near the top of the heap.

  4. Power Strike complete.  Played this to death in the early 2000s when I got in to the Aleste series.  The game is generous with power ups, especially on bosses where you can hang back, be patient, harvest points and power yourself up to go in for the kill when you're ready.

The game can suffer from a lot of slowdown of course when there's a lot going on, but that winds up helping you breathe a bit and collect yourself.

  5. Kenseiden complete.  I get a samurai ghost feel from this one.  Key to this game is to inch forward a step at a time.  The enemies spawn in more manageable numbers that way.  The bosses aren't too bad, I found flying skull to be the toughest of the bunch due to what I found to be unavoidable damage.  I'll have to watch a playthrough sometime to see if there are better tactics than I came up with on him.

  6. Spellcaster complete.  Spaghetti for everyone!

Prefer this over Mystic Defender, but that may he the nostalgia talking.  This game has a nice balance between point and click adventure and action.  Mixing in shmup elements was also cool.  Found myself wasting magic on the shmup sections, one of the limitations of the 2 button controllers at the time.

Final Demon Boss was a bit of a pushover, with the only real challenge coming in the final form where the lightening bolts were one hit kills.  Highly recommend this game.

I tried Fantasy Zone: The Maze and Strider. Neither were games that I see myself beating in the next 18 days. FZ:TM's requirement -- 51 stages! -- is especially appalling, though at least you can start at Stage 25 or whatever it is.

Haha, I attempted it as well and share your pain!  It wasn't one I played at all growing up, so I was starting at zero.  It would take me a while to master and you're right, we are running out if time!

  8. Wonderboy III complete.  Great game in many top 10s.  Not a surprise to see that long after the death of the Master System, people still talk about this one.

I'm going to try and wrap up Spellcaster soon as well.

    Anyone else working on anything?

Zillion 2 is another I'd like to finish as well.  Love the first game, but hate the second.  It's a quick playthrough though, so I'll just bite the bullet.

  9. Put the finishing touches in Golvellius today.  Been playing through it slowly over the last week or so.  Sega calling me a moron was definitely one of the highlights.

I enjoy this one overall, but it has many faults.  Endless enemy spawning and not being able to turn Kelesis around in the platforming sections to kill enemies approaching from behind are among the top annoyances.

  10. Gave up on Shooting Gallery for the day, I am really struggling with that one.

Wanted complete.  That final level was Tough, but that hidden bomb in the barrel is super helpful.  Final boss isn't so bad if you just take it slow and focus primarily on the Dynamite sticks first, and then just shoot the boss only when it is convenient.  Lastly, the blood splatter when you shoot your enemies is great!

  11. Golden Axe Warrior is complete.

Some thoughts - totally competent action RPG that master system owners could easily point to as a Legend of Zelda experience on their console (perhaps even better!).

The good: Incredible music, graphics and labyrinth design.  Some funny moments too, like that dumbass Ax Battler talking to you like an infant and casually mentioning that Death Adder killed his sister "the poor kid".  He then proceeds to sell you mission critical items... like, dude, I'm trying to save the world here, would it kill you to just give me the scroll you're hanging on to, jerk?

The not-so-good: This game's money system is imbalanced.  You can only carry 255 horns, and anything worth buying exhausts the majority of your horns. Horns themselves are also pretty scarce overall.

Also, for the majority of the game, I felt grossly underpowered.  Making it close to the end of a labyrinth only to get slaughtered by a room full of...seashells?  Save often!  I left many labyrinths midway through to backtrack, save, and re-enter.  The enemies respawn, but all other progress is saved, so it's a good way to keep from losing all progress, especially on a really tough labyrinth.
