I've been working on a list like this. I'm 70% of the way through them all. I rank them all from 0-4:

0 - it's not even a game. The US library has those 5 Infogenius titles, the JPN library has like, 3 dozen or so edutainment titles for learning Kanji and other stuff. So they're not only not worth playing, but they're useless to anyone who doesn't know Japanese.
1 - Inaccessible without some Japanese proficiency
2 - Playable, but trial-and-error, remembering options, and/or prior game knowledge is needed to access the game in full
    3 - Easily playable, minor Japanese menus/captions
3.5 - Only the title screen shows any Japanese text
    4 - No Japanese at all/identical to non-JPN versions

I can update here when the list is finished.

FYI, Super Snakey is Wildsnake in the US.

That sounds exactly like what I’m going for. Can you upload your list somewhere? I’d also like to add cartridge images so you know what to look for when going through bins of Japanese games

  2. I am running through the Japanese Game Boy ROM set and creating a list of games playable without knowing Japanese.  Games might still contain some Japanese, but if they seem easy enough to figure out or easily translate, I err on the side of including them.  Is anyone aware of such a list already existing?

  3. I was in Book Off this weekend and found a CIB copy of Altered Beast for $11.  The cartridge has typical looking cartridge wear, and the manual is slightly yellowed and feels authentic, but the case seems uncharacteristically clean.  Would this be a replacement case anyone is familiar with?

I am also curious about where the hangtab would normally be.  It looks...odd?  If it was cut off, it was an exceptionally clean cut, but it also looks like it could have been injected molded that way.

Thoughts?  Is the case a replacement?  The whole thing fake?

  4. I collect first and foremost to play the games I acquire.  For the most part, emulation and recent Chinese portables have scratched my retro gaming itch.  The experience of the (3)DS however can't really be replicated with a single-screened device, and I am not interested in playing on a desktop computer, so I decided to spring for actual hardware.  Anyone else collect in this manner? What other systems benefit most from playing on original hardware?

  5. Always been into video games, but in my 30s now, I have some money to play with. Started out a couple years ago with Switch physicals. Got bit by the metroidvania bug and played through the GBA castlevanias. I wanted to play the DS castlevanias, but there is just no good way to play them outside of a PC with a mouse, which I am not into. So I bought a 2DS, Order of Ecclesia and Portrait of Ruin.

These days I’m mainly looking to play games I missed out on in high school/college due to lack of funds, mainly DS and PSP.
