I actually admire the Pokemon series for continuing its traditional structure (more or less) throughout the series. Not everything needs to evolve or take risks to be fun, especially when the game's demographic constantly downshifts to the newest crop of 12-year-olds.

As a lifelong Pokemon fan, this is one of my favorite things about the series since since it means I can always know what I'm getting into with each new entry. I did have a period in the lead up to Gen 7 where I was worried I wouldn't like the games. But then they released, and I loved them just like all the rest.

All that said, Game Freak has been slowly experimenting more and more with the series over the last 6-7 years, and I'm excited to see where they go with it. I look forward to seeing how Legends Arceus turns out.

Great news. Now get a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and use Cloud Save Backups

I've had Nintendo Switch Online since day 1. Problem is its Cloud Saves feature doesn't support main series Pokémon saves, which happen to be the saves I care about the most.

Or even just a small micro sd card for saves!

ALL Switch saves are stored in internal memory. There's no official way to move saves to an SD card. Speaking of which, I do have a hackable Switch (multiple actually), and I plan on moving my Pokémon saves to it and backing them up with homebrew.

  3. Holding down power, volume+, and volume- at the same time is supposed to activate maintenance mode (is that what you mean by hardware reset?), but mine remains unresponsive.

I'm hesitant to open the console myself since doing things like that often don't end well for me. I'd also need to pick up some smaller triwings. I've stripped enough joycon screws to learn that finally.

  4. My Switch Lite died last night. I don't mean the battery has no charge (it was still at 84%). I mean the console is dead, and all of my Pokemon main series saves are trapped inside. If anyone is able to help or can point me to somewhere better for me to seek help, I would greatly appreciate it. Obviously, I don't expect any repair work to be free.

    Short rundown of what happened:

    1. I was using my console.
    2. I put it in sleep mode and plugged it in. (I don't recall in which order)
    3. Moments later, I decided I wasn't done, but I couldn't get the console to turn back on.

Things I have tried that normally wake up or turn on a Switch:

    • Pressing the Power button
    • Holding the Home button
    • Inserting/removing a game cart
    • Inserting/removing a SD card
    • Plugging it in again
  5. Some corrections/omissions I found:

    1. Power Star kills still follow the +2, +3, +4 time bonus progression (same as jumping on enemies). It's just that you'll usually be killing so many enemies that all but the first two will be +4. (I think shells work the same way.)
    2. Killing larger enemies gets you a larger time bonus. For example, killing a Bowser gives +10 seconds.
    3. Grabbing the flag poll at the end of a level gets you bonus time. Max of +15 for grabbing the very top.
    4. I'm pretty sure the coin bonus for a KO is a flat +50 coins. (To be fair, I also used to think you got the coins of the KO'd player.) On that note, you might want to verify if you get the KO'd players time or a flat time bonus.
    5. Special Battle rules change every few days, so it won't always be "start with 100 coins".
  6. If a game doesn't appear on the DSi/3DS menu or it errors on boot, it's fake (or I guess the connection between the cart and system could be bad.) But many fakes boot fine, especially these days. The DSi/3DS has a built in DS cart whitelist. The system will block any cart with a title (the 4 letter code) that's not in the whitelist. This whitelist was last updated in 3DS update 7.0.0 way back in 2013.

To get around the whitelist, many fake carts steal a header from a legit game. Modern DS flashcarts use the same trick. This is also why fake games often have an icon that doesn't match the game inside. If you were to crack one of these mismatched fakes open, there's a good chance you'll find an SD card inside with the game ROM loaded on it.

    So in short:
    - Icon doesn't show = Either FAKE or a connection problem
    - Game errors on boot = Either FAKE or a connection problem
    - Icon and game don't match = Definitely FAKE

If it passes all three of those checks, keep looking for other clues.

Oh, and current DSi and 3DS custom firmwares usually disable the whitelist check, so make sure to test with a non-hacked system.

    Edit:
I also want to add that checking for the Pokewalker option in Pokemon HGSS is not a definitive fake check. This is HG running on a flashcart, so it's 100% fake, yet it still has the Pokewalker option.

  7. I heard the space launch rumor with both Jirachi and Deoxys. Oddly never both at the same time. The launches are actually just the number of weeks that have passed since the game was started.

There is some truth to the Celebi shrine rumor as it was used for a event Celebi encounter in Crystal. However the event item was only released in Japan and later worldwide with the VC re-releases.

Another widespread rumor was that there was a 1 in 268,435,456 chance of encountering Celebi on route 123 in Ruby/Sapphire. Serebii even addressed the rumor on his site: https://www.serebii.net/games/celebi.shtml

Others that I heard were that Unown evolves into a random legendary at level 40 and that shiny Charizard is Fire/Flying/Dark type. Those were so easily disprovable that I'm not surprised they didn't spread.

  8. Hello everyone!

I joined NA many years ago, but mostly just lurked. Now I'm here, and will possibly end up just lurking here too. Who knows.

As far as collecting goes, I almost exclusively focus on Pokemon (on Nintendo consoles; not any of the PC, Pico, etc. stuff). I've got every North American release, every Japanese main series release, and a UK copy of Typing Adventure. My latest collecting endeavor has been rounding up all of the battle-e cards. Excluding promos, I'm only missing a few now. Might need to see if I can trade with anyone on here to complete that.
