Or some rich folks wanting to avoid paying the IRS a lot of money by dumping there money into graded games. Then trade them off the books later sort of speak lol.

That is true too lol.  Every collectible has just skyrocketed, even the funny/weird ones which I really don't know how they can be so valuable (NFT's and digital blockchain sports cards)

If the future looking good to you is "prices going up".

That ain't me, man. I wanna see this shit PLUMMET. I don't even care about the roughly 50k worth of games I'm sitting on. Drop my collection value to 10k tomorrow and my only thought will be "nice, I can buy more games".

I hear ya.  Yeah I don't mind dropping as well as I'd like to add more key games into my collection 😄

Yeah but...that still doesn’t justify the insanity of it going so much more than any 1+ year collectors would predict. Considering past sales and how much more we can predict will come out in the future.

My view is that we shouldn’t make fun of that 1.5M price. It has likely served its purpose in guaranteeing any future Mario 64 9.8A++ be above the 500K range, and Mario 64 9.6A+ above the 100K range. No matter what prices we all see, there is that psychological feel that “these are all bargains”.

Yeah prices went up too fast too soon, rather than organically going up little by little. I think alot of these record prices paid is due to FOMO or some rich folks just wanting the best of the best only. Waiting for prices to stabilize to see where the market is heading next.

But still, the video game market is still up a million percent from a few years ago even after this pullback 😆. Future still looking good.

  4. Also surprised with the SNES Legend of Zelda WATA 9.4 that sold for $36k. The 9.2 from the last auction sold for $100k. Someone on Facebook commented that he bought a VGA 85 (or 80) on ebay for roughly the same price as the 9.4 and even mentioned he would go as high as 60k to bid. Looks like he got lucky..

Yep, grade and seal differences do not correlate in prices. You get it.

On the other hand, another 9.8 A++ went for 800K. So putting everything together, that 1.5M Mario is definitely something weird/insane/headscratch.

It was the first 9.8 SM 64 up for auction.  Usually the first highest grade hammers the highest price than it goes downhill from there as other copies are auctioned off.

  6. Not quite surprised that we are seeing some market price correction going on. These games went up too high and too fast. Like with anything that goes high way too quickly was bound to lose steam and correct itself later. Happened in sportscards and comics. I guess we'll see how prices for these same games look next year, if the momentum upward will still be in effect.

Yes I did see Shyne purchased the Sonic game in the past Goldin Auction on his IG account.  Quite a price for "just" a 9.4. Will be interesting to see how the HA WATA 9.6 does with a better wrap. Also to note that Shyne and Ken Goldin are really good friends and they've posted a few live sportscard box breaks together. It's an arguement for those who think the sale is fake I guess. But then again the consignor of the game seems they got paid. So take that as you will.

I tend to follow any market that helps me decide what I should consider collecting. It's a long story.

Plus I thought that people are hunting down the Clone Saga issues, and not this one. Because Sony cancelled their Ben and May movies while Marvel is bringing back Peter's clone (Ben) as the new Spider-Man! 😂

As for vintage toys... The original MOC "rocket firing" Boba Fett is an "error packing" variant. Kenner cancelled that plan when they learned that the rocket is a potential choking hazard. With the "double telescoping" lightsaber figures becoming variants because the tips were too fragile (and can be a "eye poking" hazard).

Then again... The only "rare" MOC figure I own is Cara Dune. She went from being an epic-level peg warmer to being a controversial hot commodity to being one I paid a sane price for.

I did have one of those Cara Dune Black label figures.. unfortunately, I was trimming down my toy collection and sold that together with my other SW black series figures before it was announced that the Dune figures were being discontinued 😭. I always tend to sell at the wrong timed

Has anyone shipped in a speedrun and turbo together and have only received the speedrun tiered games, but not the turbo ones yet?  Long story short because the games in these tiers were bundled up together and shipped, WATA placed them under a single order # and when I view the completed orders, that same order # says it's shipped.  Of course not everything is shipped because my turbos are still with them and when I asked if they can split those orders up and put them in a separate order # so it's not to be confused with the "shipped" status, they said they couldn't do it and that when there is new movement, they will automatically be placed in the open orders tab.

It's concerning to me because I have not seen a single change since my speedruns were shipped months ago.  I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and wanted if WATA did in fact separate the pending ones from the shipped ones and maybe created a separate work order for them or have the same order # and just placed under the open orders tab.

Just to follow-up, WATA has placed that order into "open" now and is currently in post-grading.  Yippee!!! Another 6 months left to go.

People don't bother following that portion of the market, that's why. I mean how many will officially proclaim that a near-perfect copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 should not have sold for that amount? I mean besides those who do not know that it is also Spider-Man's very first appearance in any media.

Seriously... It makes me wonder how people would react if somebody paid a third of that price for a MOC AFA (or CAS) 85+ graded "vinyl cape" Jawa. 🤔

I don't think the high price paid is because of the 1st app of Spider-man.. The reason may be because it's also the first appearance of Uncle Ben and Aunt May😆

I don't really follow the SW collectible toy market but I think the Vinyl Cape Jawa in high grade MOC condition can fetch a hefty price tag.. The rocket firing prototype Boba Fett though fetched 225k and I'm sure only about 2-3 are known to exist?  That was a huge price but in today's crazy market where all collectibles shot up in value, it may be accepted now.

  10. I don't even know why the AF 15 comic that sold for $1.5 mil is making headways and a big deal.  There are a few other books that sold for more in the $3 mil range and no one has thought of these sales as being a fraud/scam...  It's accepted by may comic collectors including myself.

Specifically define how my point is a "false assumption".

High road = I'm not gonna sit here and exchange insults over my awesome facts that it's easier to keep a comic book in good condition than it is a video game. The most awesome fact is how some of you are still defending paying $1.5 million dollars for a used comic book that has dozens of more examples out there in much better condition.

There is only 4 I believe graded as a CGC 9.6 and the $1.5 mil paid for it was not surprising to me unlike the Mario 64 that sold for around that much with many more copies around that same grade that are either pending to be graded at WATA, held ungraded by someone else's collrction, or crossed over from VGA to WATA. That sale will bring out more copies out of the woodwork and I can only see the pop reports rise from here on out.

There is to some degree that video games are tough to find in sealed boxes especially the older titles because most im sure have been opened up and played with.  Not really difficult to preserve a video game because they can be stored in their respective boxes or some sort of molded plastic container that opens up.

Comics on the other hand, that is if you're talking about comics pre-1960's were really not thought of as collectibles that time and were heavily read, stored in maybe a basement, garage, a barn even where paper can degrade overtime due to the changing temperatures (a lot of books would have brittle pages as a result) or stored optimally away from direct sunlight, heavy moisture, and cooler temperatures. Also people back then did not have the essential supplies to store comics. There were no acid free backing boards which would protect the comic from curling up overtime and the spine to weaken, and the mylar plastics were I believe used starting in the 70's maybe mid-late 60s. Before that period, parents normally would toss away comic books in the trash or light them on fire whenever their child is done reading them. Majority of the buyers at that time too were children and teens so comic book damages was pretty common who saved up a dime to buy at their local drugstore.  Nowadays, it's so much easier to preserve comics better.

  12. The problem Joe Gulag is that you are making false assumptions regarding the comic book collecting hobby because you were never in that hobby to learn more about it such as the market, the history, current trends, etc. to get a better idea on why and how comics are valuable and have been part of the collectibles market for years and years. You're putting out a false narrative when it comes to that without doing any research. I wish you well.
