Rules
 

• Titles in black must be completed entirely within the current calender year.
• Titles in green (never been beaten) will not have such a restriction.  ie if you started Super Play Action Football in 2017 and you finish it in 2018, you will get credit for the clear in 2018.
• Photos are not required, but are highly encouraged
• In general, games should be completed on the medium/default difficulty or above
• Please post the name of the beaten games in bold
• Emulators are allowed.  Save states, cheat codes, Game Genies, and turbo controllers are not
• No calling games.  Points will be awarded to whoever first claims completion.  That doesn't mean it isn't prudent to let the thread know you're playing through a longer game, but players are free to snipe it from you
• For sports titles, you are allowed to skip straight to the postseason if that option is presented to you.  Simulating regular season games is also allowed.
• Scoring - this is meant to mimic the NES thread.  Score value is based on the previous years' speed with which each title was completed.  All-time unbeaten games were divy'ed up by me based on my best possible guesses.  You may also notice some discrepencies with the listed outcomes from previous years.  That is due to changes with the included games list, errors by previous thread owners, and errors by myself no doubt.
• I've added victory conditions to the game list in order to (attempt to) consolidate information, and alleviate confusion.  DISCLAIMER:  There was a lot of guesswork involved; if you notice that what I have seems wrong in some way, please let me know.  Consider that column a major work-in-progress, and more of a guideline at this point.
• If I have no completion notes, assume its a straight-forward "beat the game" 
• For sports titles in general, assume you have to win the championship/playoffs/tournament.
• No major glitches that let you skip portions of the game (i.e. A Link to the Past)
• In addition to clearing black titles and trying to finish off the remaining green titles, I will now start tracking clears of (playable/translated) Super Famicom games, including PAL releases.  There will be no master list of titles, nor will I have any clear conditions.  That's just now realistic right now.  I also will not be be considering any clears that happened in previous years from 2018. 
• SFC titles will be worth a flat 6 points for now.  I don't want to do decimals so I rounded up
• I don't know SFC clear conditions, and that won't be changing anytime soon.  But please share whatever you find out in the thread so we can start tracking it

I'm debating it.  But I'm actually leaning towards starting over from scratch and tasking us with beating the library, top-to-bottom, with no annual resets or time limits or anything.  See if we can truly beat the entire library one time.  Plus that would make this a "different" effort from the annual NES rush.  We can't compete with that (anymore).

Unless people are really, really passionate about beating Mega Man X every January.

It annoyed me to see Toys still on the unbeaten list (not to mention to see me with no contributions in 2019), so I took care of it this afternoon.

I beat The Smurfs.

One would expect that a game based on a children's cartoon would be an easy and chill playthrough, right? No! This game is pretty tough. Maybe not Castlevania III tough, but at least more difficult than Super Mario World. Luckily there were passwords once every four levels, so that I could continue on another day. But what made the game somewhat frustrating, was, that on the one hand you couldn't tell, what hurts you or on which enemies you could jump or not, e.g. a puddle of water will hurt you, if you walk over it. If you take several small jumps however, it is no problem. Then there were several plants that looked like they were part of the background, but all of a sudden they inflict damage upon touching. Or you could jump on a vulture to take care of it, but jumping on a butterfly will only get you hurt. What?! Then there are also a few black bees or black smurfs that instantly kill you. On the other hand there were many, many blind jumps, trial and error levels and hazards that come at you from outside the visible area leaving you no time to evade. It doesn't help either that your character is somewhat big and the screen zoomed in a bit too much. Some levels also feature tight corridors where you have to time your jumps perfectly or you immediately fall into a pit and die.

The final boss was also quite challenging and a bit cheap as well. Gargamel walks constantly at you and touching him will immediately kill you. The only way to inflict damage upon him is by letting his vulture drop an acorn on a log and jumping on the other end of it to throw it into Gargamel's mouth. The problem is, that you have to be very quick and can't afford to miss too often (missing twice at the beginning of the battle means inevitable failure). There also seems to be some kind of randomness involved, since the vulture sometimes flew over me and didn't drop an acorn, but instead he flew away laughing, while Gargamel killed me. This sucked. This fight alone caused me four or five game overs. And after each one I had to repeat the previous three stages as well. But eventually I got into a rhythm and probably also had a bit of luck.

That being said, there are definitely a bunch of good things about this game too. The graphics are nice and true to the source material. And while the OST may not be very extensive, what is there, is pretty decent as well. The developer, Infogrames, also put a decent amount of levels into this game, 15 to be precise. But some of these feature several areas, i.e. they can easily count for two or up to three levels. So overall you could say, that this game has about 20+ levels. There is also a decent amount of variety, from a mine cart level to a sledge ride, exploratory cave/mountain levels, a frantic chase etc. So it's not an overly shallow experience and you definitely get some bang for your bucks. However, I imagine that probably not many children may have ever beaten this game due to a relatively tough challenge and some unintuitive/bad design.

Super Empire Strikes Back is done. 

 

I have mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand its a very long very ambitious game that is excellent in many regards. In terms of content its one of the best SNES games Ive ever played. Many of the levels are very fun and exhilarating. On the other hand, the collision detection is terrible, the controls could be better, and some of the levels are not fun and actually quite tedious and frustrating. The Hoth caves are the worst and the 2D vertical shooter level where your ship takes up 40% of the screen was ridiculous. The highlights of the game are the 3D battle of Hoth level and the final duel with Vader. Most of all though I loved that it gave me a password when I died unlike the first Super Star Wars. It was a lot of fun but its also left me feeling pretty burnt out. I don't think Im gonna play a video game for a while.
