The 2021 Backlog Challenge

We all have gigantic backlogs, right?  Dozens of games.  Hundreds of games.  Thousands of games.  We've always wanted to play our dusty copy of Dragon Warrior 2, because everyone tells us it's a stone-cold classic.  But who has the time, right?

Well let's make the time.

  • Participating users will initially create one post in this thread.  They will use this post to come up with a list of games that they want to finally beat in 2021.
  • The list can be as big or small as you want.  5 games?  Fine.  10 games?  Better.  25 games? Go for it.
  • Please use that same post to make updates and track your progress throughout the year.  That way it will be much easier to see how everyone is doing.  You can still make new posts to notify everyone of updates, or discuss whatever you want, but let's have everyone track their progress in their OP.
  • What constitutes 'beating' a game?  That's up to you.
  • What games are in scope?  All of them.
  • Can you amend your list later?  NO.  I mean, beat whatever games you want, but for the spirit and scope of this thread let's stick to our original goal.
  • Try to have your list together by January 1st.  Once it's posted and the new year begins, consider it final.
  • Further clarifications as I think of them.

1/1 Update:

  • Started Disgaea 4.
  • Beat Shinobi III on Easy.  Man, that final level is no joke.  I'm honestly kinda scared of trying to do it on Normal right now.  I'll come back to it later...

1/10 Update:

  • Started Castlevania, but it locked up on Death's stage.  Same thing happened to me a few years ago.

1/17 Update:

  • Beat Castlevania.  I had to do the Holy Water trick on Death.  And thank God for the checkpoint before Dracula, who turned out to be reasonably easy once you learn the pattern.

1/20 Update:

  • Beat Disgaea 4.  Probably my fastest Disgaea clear since I didn't spend too much time in the Item World.
  • Started Castlevania II.

1/22 Update:

  • Beat Castlevania II.  I used a guide.  I knew the reputation, and wasn't gonna wander around aimlessly for hours on end.
  • Started Castlevania III.

1/23 Update:

  • Started Resident Evil Zero.

2/2 Update:

  • Beat Resident Evil Zero.  Pretty much cribbs everything from REmake.  Still fun though.

3/5 Update:

  • Started Zelda II.
  • Started Rock n Roll Racing.

3/11 Update:

  • Beat Rock n Roll Racing.  Mercifully shorter than RPM Racing, but still a ton of races to get through.
  • Started Equinox.

3/14 Update:

  • Beat Equinox.  I cleared most of it once upon a time and remembered a lot of the tricks.  I used a guide to help steer me in the right direction in the last few dungeons though.  Those things are no joke, especially without maps...
  • Started Sparkster, beat it on Easy.

3/15 Update:

  • Beat Sparkster on Normal.

3/20 Update:

  • Started and beat Splatterhouse 2.  Thank God for continues.
  • Started and beat Ghouls n Ghosts.  Thank God for continues.
  • Started Shadowrun.

3/27 Update:

  • Beat Shadowrun.  This would be a really tough completion without at least consulting a guide.  The rest of my thoughts I'll save for the inevitable write-up.

4/1 Update:

  • Started Gargoyle's Quest.

5/24 Update:

  • Beat Zelda II.  Good God.
  • Started Super C.

5/29 Update:

  • Beat Super C.  Mostly a breeze, but I am pretty well-versed in Contra games, and no-deathed the original, so the skills transferred over.

6/2 Update:

  • Started Fire Emblem Fates Conquest.
  • Started Shin Megami Tensei III.

6/23 Update:

  • Beat Fire Emblem Fates Conquest.  More challenging than Birthright was, which is a good thing.  I'll have to do Revelations this year or next.

8/24 Update:

  • Beat Shin Megami Tensei III.  Liked it quite a bit.  Maybe not as much as SMT IV or IV:A, or some of the spin-offs, but still happy I stuck with it through the rather long playtime.
  • Started Persona Q2.
  • Started Planescape Torment.

10/11 Update:

  • Beat Persona Q2.  Lots of fun, lots of content, but man am I ready for a break from punishing games.  And I can probably take another year or two off from the Etrian Odyssey formula.

10/14 Update:

  • Beat Gargoyle's Quest.  Pretty short and linear, but it was a lot of fun.  That section with the drills coming out of the wall was pretty infuriating.

12/6 Update:

  • Finally finished Planescape Torment.  Reminiscent of Baldur's Gate II, but with less emphasis on combat (you're pretty OP in this one) and more on talking about figuring shit out.

I love this idea.  I'm in too.  I'll try to get a list together this week.

Edit:

This will be my official list.  One of my goals was to keep my list short, but realistic.

Part 1 is a list of games I've never played before other than maybe the first 10 minutes or so.  All of these are games that I've always wanted to play but for whatever reason, never got around to.

  • Resident Evil 3 (will play the PS1 version on original hardware)
  • Tomb Raider III (will play the PS1 version on original hardware)
  • Super Mario RPG (will play on original hardware)
  • Okami (I plan to play the HD version on PS4)

Part 2 is a list is games that I've played before, possibly as far as 80%, but I've never finished.  I love all of these games, but for whatever reason, something came up that caused me to stop playing, and enough time passed that I didn't want to pick it back up in the middle of a long session.  My plan is to start each of these games from the beginning.

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (will play SNES version on original hardware)
  • Journey (will play PS3 version on original hardware)
  • Axiom Verge (will play PS4 version on original hardware)

Not sure on the order yet.  I will decide that as I go.  And I will update this list throughout the year with my progress.  Wish me luck.

These are all games I'd like to see played/beaten. It's a shame they're sitting there untouched. Some I've beaten in the past, but for backlog purposes I consider a game not beaten unless I've beaten the copy I currently own, and many of these are re-purchases I need to get my money's worth out of.

Oooh this sounds fun, I'm in 🙂

Ok - so my first "main" list is going to be one per system (not every system of course):

1.  Journey to Silius (NES)   ---   Started 01/01/21   —-   Completed 01/10/21!

Great intitiative! I'll have to give myself some leeway as I'm expecting my first kid real soon. But hopefully I'll get time to knock some of these off my Backloggery. If I don't happen to enjoy a game, it'll just get removed from the list altogether. Mainly doing this for myself as it's a handy way to keep track of some games, but don't take any stock in my clear percentages as I will be editing this post as I go along. 3/1 update
Finished Bomberman Hero, well underway with Metal Wolf Chaos
4/1 update
Bomberman Party Edition took around 90 minutes to get through. Pretty much just the NES game, but with good controls and awesome music remixes. Not worth bothering with for anything outside the completely traditional battle mode.
5/1 update
Unfortunately I'll have to postpone the intended next step in my Bomberman journey. Bomberman Online turns out to be pretty much impossible to control effectively with the Dreamcast's stock controller, so it's sent on hiatus until I find an alternative way to play it.
However, I finished off the final boss in Metal Wolf Chaos XD, what a ride that game was.
7/1 update
I beat 100% of Bomberman Max 2. That's "80% completion" because the game wants you to play both nearly identical versions of the game for the best ending. I say screw that, and consider this one done.
11/1 update
Working on the next Bomberman game, it's not very interesting.
Started Yakuza 4. Spent 6 hours so far and I'm 3% into the game by its own report. Looks like this one is gonna take a while.
16/1 update
I finally finished Yakuza 4, and according to the game I only played 22% of it despite spending many, many hours doing pointless side content. I might go back just to try out how the golf minigame works, but I think instead I'll push Yakuza 5 and more into my 2021 plan, just to see how the series progresses, but that's gonna put the planned backlog on hold for a while.
20/1 update
Bomberman Generation is pretty boring, so in the meantime I finished Pocket Bomberman, which is a super fun game, but also way too short.
3/2 update
After spending time with a bunch of games not even on my list (cyber shadow, gb donkey kong, yakuza 5), I've now started on Legend of The Mystical Ninja. I've pulled up the game a few times before, but never played it far. It's time to beat it.
6/2 update
Legend of the Mystical Ninja is down. Much better game than my previous impressions, and a lot more action oriented than I'd thought. It does a few really annoying things, and has hitbox issues, but overall it's a very unique and refreshing approach to game design.
8/2 update
Yoku's Island Express is a really damn fun take on the typical indie metroidvania. Cute, charming designs, and a fun world to explore, and even though I would have liked some more satisfying physics, the pinball mechanics really make it unique.

24/4 update
After burning out on both Wasteland 2 and Vagrant Story, I at least made it through Mystic Quest. Was interesting enough to see me through to the end, but it's not really a good game to be honest.
While it might look like I haven't been too busy, I've actually beaten more games than probably ever before over the past few months, it's just that most of them weren't on my backlog list. Oops.

20/6 update
Hey, I beat Lufia. I knew it wasn't as great as Lufia 2, but the discrepancy between the two is much bigger than I remembered. It's a very mindless DQ ripoff that manages to replicate almost nothing of what actually makes those games great. One thing I do like though, is the balance in the economy of the game, that makes it feel continually rewarding whenever you manage to upgrade your gear, and encounters feel threatening throughout most of the game.
I started Lufia 2 immediately after, and man, that game is better in every way.

7/9 update
I had a bit of a break due to a local arcade event going on here, which had me practice for a bunch of arcade one credit clears. Once it was over I got a bit into a retro shooter mood, playing a bunch of Gradius games and stuff. I should probably take that as a chance to get into Fantasy Zone 2 which is actually on my list. Looking back on the list now, I've decided to drop Vagrant Story and Wasteland 2 entirely. Both games are just too drab and boring, and it's been too long since I played it. I'm also not going to return to Armored Core: Master of Arena, it's just not approachable to someone who didn't play the original, and I think I need to get into some of the later games in the series instead. Oh, and with Elden Ring being announced for January next year, that game will unfortunately juust miss the cut. 😞

24/9 update
Not really in the mood for long games recently, but I pulled out Fantasy Zone 2 for a quick 1CC. Game was bother harder and easier than I remembered. I'm satisfied with the bad ending for now, but I really want a clear with the good one.

The trophy wall:

Ooo, I like the idea of this. I'll definitely participate.

My Backlog List:

Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Trigger
God of War (PS4)
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Bloodborne
Shovel Knight
Shadow of the Colossus
The Last Guardian
The Last of Us
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Tomb Raider (2013)
Sonic Generations
Resident Evil 7
Ori and the Blind Forest
Hollow Knight
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

I think this should be a pretty good start. I might add a few more before the beginning of 2021, but I think this should be good enough for now.

(Also the VR games Boneworks and Half-Life: Alyx are honorary members of this list, however I want to wait until I upgrade my PC to play those, and I'm not 100% sure if that's gonna happen this year.)

Awesome initiative. I'll be aiming for 24 games to finish, which means two games/month. Some games I have already made progress in, but most games are not started.

VIRTUAL BOY

  • Virtual Boy Wario Land [link]
  • Red Alarm [link]
  • Galactic Pinball [link]
  • Vertical Force [link]

NINTENDO 64

  • Ridge Racer 64 [link]
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day [link]
  • F-Zero X [link]

NINTENDO SWITCH

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [link]
This one has been in the back of my mind for a long time, probably over a year. I beat three divine beasts, but for some reason this game then got paused.

PLAYSTATION 4

  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice [link]
From what I understand this game has permadeath. Should I die and the game end, I will consider this game beaten/finished. I'm already a couple of hours in.
  • Doom (2016) [link]
  • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus [link]
  • The Order: 1886 [link]
  • Unravel TWO [link]
  • Titanfall 2 [link]
  • Battlefield 1 [link] I gave this about 30min. It's not for me 🙂 I will not finish this game.

PC

  • Limbo [link] BEATEN 30/1 - 21
For some reason I never finished this game and I'm really close to the end. Ok, I was literally five minutes from finishing the game, haha. Started it almost ten years ago, for some reason stopped, and now finally I can let this one go (yey). It was a good game, as was "Inside".
  • Samorost 3 [link]
  • Brothers - A tale of Two Sons [link]
  • Firewatch [link]
  • Little Nightmares [link]
  • Hotline Miami [link]
  • The Stanley Parable [link]

OCULUS QUEST 2

  • Virtual Virtual Reality [link]
  • Trover Saves the Universe [link]

Listed in alphabetical order. I have no intention on finishing all of these this year as it would take almost 700 hours, but I do hope to take down one big RPG every month.

3DS

   Bravely Default (56 hours)
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (55 hours)
Return to PopolooCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairy Tale (17 hours)
   Stella Glow (49 hours)

PSP

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (27 hours)
   Valkyria Chronicles: Lenneth (30 hours)

PS Vita

Super Dimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls (18 hours)

Switch

   Immortals: Fenyx Rising (30 hours)

Mario + Rabbits: Battle Kingdom (21 hours)

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (31 hours)
Shovel Knight Treasure Trove (7 hours)
   Sonic Mania Plus (5 hours)
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (50 hours)

Ys VIII: Lacramos of Dana (38 hours)

Wii

   Warioland: Shake It (7 hours)

Xbox One

   Cyberpunk 2077 (20 hours)
Red Dead Redemption 2 (48 hours)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

1/4
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - 12 hours in, finished prologue and started Ch 1.

9/8

Cyberpunk 2077 completed. I got the corporate ending and going back to Earth. I'll do another playthrough to get other endings when more content/updates release.

9/30

I finished Immortals: Fenyx Rising on the Switch tonight. It's described as a BotW clone, and that's exactly what it is. I didn't enjoy the puzzles and platforming as much as BotW but I thought the combat was much more dynamic. It took just under 31 hours, including a couple extra hours worth of grinding.

Alright here is my first stab! I have been a hardcore collector the last 20 years and not a gamer so I'm behind. I may have really played 5 games over the same time period but now that my collecting journey is done (maybe 2 games to purchase and some NESSNES and N64 inserts) this thread came at the perfect time.

Ok most systems checked out well.  The OG XBox time isn’t holding the date & time so it seems I need to replace a capacitor.... that should be fun. I spent the last few years building my ultimate gaming setup with everything google voice controlled, all systems hooked up with either SCART or HDMI .....ready to go in a moments notice so it was fun to see it all come together as planned.

I got all the homies together for a group photo at the bar. Figure good time to start on a Saturday morning like back in the day. Now it’s time to see who’s first!

UPDATE: Metal Slug first to go! Decide to take on a short game first.

1/3 Update

We took out Elevator Action II. The ending was horrible so my son said let’s play Metal Slug 2 so we did. I actually liked it much more than MS1. Now that arcade based games are out the way back to Shakedown Hawaii 2.
1/11 Update

Still plugging along in Hotline Miami 2! My son and I did knock out Metal Slug 2, X, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (not on the list) was tired of playing Metal Slug and I swore I dozed off once in MS4. Anyhow still plugging along. I should have Hotline Miami 2 done by the weekend.

1/12 Update

Completed Hotline Miami 2. Cool game but gets to be a drag towards the end. Not sure what’s next

1/15 Update

Completed Mega Man 1. Once I got rolling I remembered playing as a kid and then what weapon helps beat the stage boss the best. Amazing how memory comes back. It was honestly a lot of fun and what I dreamed of when I set out to collect games... pull on old classic off the shelf with easy controls. What’s next..... no clue.

1/28 Update

Well finally knocked out Donkey Kong Country. Cool game and decent challenge. Off to the Last of US remastered on the PS4 or Resident Evil on the GameCube.

2/1 Update

Completed Last of Us Remastered. Must say one of the best games I’ve ever played. Now off to something lighter. Maybe Splatterhouse or Conkers

2/10 Update

I decided to complete Last of Us Part II (not on the list). After that experience Splatterhouse is next.

2/16 Update

Shifted to play up Portal 2.... it was a grind and not my cup of tea but I got it completed. Now off to Splatterhouse.

2/18 Update

Knocked out Splatterhouse today. I truly can appreciate a short and sweet game. I prefer this style to the hours long grind of new gen. What next????? No clue

2/20 Update

Finished up A Way Out. Great game. Not sure what’s next.

2/23 Update

Completed Castlevania. I got beyond frustrated with the game that the game couldn’t save allowing me come back to it.

2/26 Update

My daughter stepped up when my son flaked out on me and we knocked out Streets of Rage. Cool beat ‘em up.

3/3 Update

Finished by Halo. Great game and everything from what I remembered when I last played in 2002.

3/12 Update

Veto Nights into Dreams after 4+ hours of play only to find out I need a C on every level. I wish they made this clear up front. Can’t be bothered

3/13 Update

Got my act together and beat Nights this morning. Just hated to redo all the stages because the the grades but I got it done. First Saturn game I played and beat.

My goal for the year is to beat at least 1 game in each console I own.  Here is a list of what is at the top of my backlog:

NES: Lolo trilogy, Guardian Legend, Power Blade, Willow, Startropics 2, Metalstorm RE-BEATEN: Mega Man 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Zelda 2.  3 of my all-time favorites that I have beaten many times over.  I play through Zelda 2 at least once a year.

SNES: Axelay, Chrono Trigger, Contra 3, Soulblazer, Super Star Wars trilogy, both Lufias.  RE-BEATEN: Mega Man X and Super Soccer.  2 childhood favorites.

N64: Pokemon Snap, Rogue Squadron, Kirby 64

Gamecube: Chibi Robo, Fire Emblem (on hardest setting), Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Eternal Darkness

Wii: Zelda Skyward Sword, Wario Land Shake it, Deadspace Extraction, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (hardest setting), at least 1 light gun shooter with my wife and/or daughter

Wii U: Twilight Princess and Wind Waker remakes

Switch: Panzer Dragoon, Slay the Spire, Ni No Kuni.  BEATEN: Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, Slay the Spire.  PLAYING: Skyward Sword.  Meh.

Gameboy: Rolans Curse, Mole Mania, Kirby Dreamland 2

Gameboy Color: Project S-11, Bomberman Quest, Warlocked

GBA: Klonoa 1 &2, Mega Man Zero 2-4, Wade Hilton's Counterpunch

DS: Avalon Code, Ghost Trick, Monster Tale, Etrian Odyssey 1

3DS: Ever Oasis, SMT4

Turbografx-16: Neutopia 1 & 2, Air Zonk

Turbografx CD: Ys 1-3, Dragon Slayer the Legend of Heroes

PS1: Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Mega Man X4-X6, Omega Boost, Einhander

PS2: Shadow Hearts (trilogy)

PS3: 3D Dot Game Heroes, Valkyria Chronicles

Master System: Phantasy Star, an Alex Kidd andtor Wonder Boy game

Genesis: Castlevania Bloodlines

Sega CD: Shining Force CD, Sonic CD

Saturn: Albert Odyssey, Resident Evil, Astal

Dreamcast: EGG, Record of Lodoss War.  BEATEN: Gundam Side Story 0079, a game that is held back by the limits of the Dreamcast controller but is otherwise great.  Playing through it makes me want to re-watch some old Gundam series like 08th MS Team.  RE-BEATEN: Skies of Arcadia, a game I've beaten several since release but this was the first time in 9 years.  Beating it again helped solidify why it's one of my all-time favorites.

Game Gear: Ax Battler, Halley Wars, Tails Adventure

Xbox: Panzer Dragon Orta, Gunvalkyrie, Xyanide

Xbox 360: Enslaved, Deathsmiles

Neo Geo Pocket Color: Sonic Pocket Adventure

Other: New surprise releases.

Progress: 5/29 consoles.
