Updated with pictures now!  Please send me a message if you see anything weird as you browse this thread with different devices.... I will eventually be linking to full size images once I get all the lists laid out.

Enjoy!

Nice work I’m glad you’re rebuilding these threads as I use them as a reference all the time. Is it possible to have larger images open when you click the thumbnails?

I'm working on the high res images.  I may, in the end, just link to my google drive folders that are currently storing the high resolution scans of them for simplicity reasons and plus it is cheap (free) full size image storage for my purposes of making these right now.

Any update getting a link to google drive for the hi-res covers? I’d love to have those! Also I think you have the wrong thumbnail for Prima’s Nintendo Game Secrets Vol. 1 @acidjaguar

Thanks for catching that one.  I went ahead and updated it and now added links to my googe drive folder for the NES and Multi Game books for full size scans of what I have available for everyone that is interested.

Very nice!! I'm totally gonna make a database on my computer and check off the few I already have. Did you ever notice the UPC numbers on the two 1st Edition Game Players Nintendo Encyclopedia scans you have with the same cover are different? I knew there was an alternate cover but I didn't know the first cover got two printings

There are multiple examples on stuff like this that I did not cover in the list.  Many of the consumer report books have a variety of different UPCs / print iterations but I didn't want to get too far down the rabbit hole and just give the basic information of a book cover for people who wanted to search it out and maybe work on a set.  You will find that there are a lot of minor variants out there, but we made the list just covering major variants here.... so be careful and don't follow the white rabbit!

Lol very true. It's just funny, Game Player's is such an enigma. Their numbering system on the first few magazines is all out of whack and they have two Vol. 1 Number 1 issues. And they called it "Nintendo Buyer's Guide" and "Nintendo Strategy Guide". Then they also had MS-DOS Guide, PC Guide, Sega Genesis Guide, Game Boy Guide. They actually had 53876 and 71486 as prefixes on the UPC of some of their magazines too. It's like they had two different UPC companies registered?

Yeah, I'm with you there.  Game Player's certainly tried to cover all the grounds .....

Game Player's: Leading Magazine of Video and Computer Entertainment (generic magazine for Nintendo / PC / Sega / NEC / Amiga / Atari / other systems later too)

This is the sequence I believe for Nintendo, effectively changing their title four times:

  • a. Game Player's Guide to Nintendo (premier issue only)
  • b. Game Player's Nintendo Strategy Guide (vol 1 no 2 and vol 1 no 3 same as Strategy guide to Nintendo Games)
  • c. Game Player's Strategy Guide to Nintendo Games
  • d. Game Player's Nintendo Guide

Game Player's Nintendo Buyer's Guide -> Game Player's Buyer's Guide to Nintendo Games

Game Player's Sega Genesis Strategy Guide -> Game Player's Sega Guide!

Game Player's Encyclopedias:

  • Sega Genesis - 5 volumes
  • Nintendo Games - 8 volumes
  • Game Boy - 3 volumes

Game Player's VHS Tapes - maybe around 16 tapes?

Game Player's Nintendo / Sega (or also seen:  Sega / Nintendo)

Game Player's - CES Special Issues  (3 or so issues)

Game Player's MS-DOS Strategy Guide

Game Player's PC Strategy Guide

Game Player's PC Buyer's Guide

Game Player's PC Entertainment

Game Player's Sports for Kids

Game Player's Strategy Guide to Game Boy

Ultra Game Player's (I think this is another part)

This is probably a thread in itself honestly.....

Yeah I love Game Players! I'm not sure if I had any issues as a kid but I definitely borrowed Consumer Reports (maybe red one?) from my cousin's friend and thought the cheats/tips were so cool. Did Game Players really have 16 videos? I have ads for 9 of them. And the Super Mario Bros 2 one is marked Vol. 1 No. 1 next to the Double Dragon one that also says Vol. 1 No. 1 literally in the same ad!! I see they have ads for Game Players Sports for Kids in the magazines, but I've searched for it online and came up with nothing, they really printed it? It's always the Magic Johnson cover in the ads.

I've never heard of Game Players CES Specials can you elaborate? This really is a separate thread lol

Here's the premiere of the Sports for Kids issue.  Don't think it made it past it though ....

nHu8TyD.jpg

And then here is an example of the CES issues.  They did around 3 or 4 ... waiting for confirmation from a friend who has the known set.  They made guides to CES in fashion to their magazines ....

tSt4kRi.jpeg

And I will have to verify with another guy about how many Game Player's tapes there are.  I had thought there were 16, but he can confirm and hopefully give me a pic for reference as I seem to not have it on hand.

Wow that CES Guide is news to me! I'd like to see more issues if you can get pics, and definitely pics of the Game Tapes. I know My Life in Gaming has 8 of the tapes up on YouTube. The highest number up is No. 12 Acclaim.

@mideast - right exactly.  They essentially changed up their covers usually by color, but at times added stuff like this to the top where it is a later iteration.  They got pretty crazy on their variants, especially with coloring, UPCs, spiral vs no spiral, and "By the Editors of Consumer Guides" .... all same content though I am fairly certain.

Have you ever heard of this tell all book from 2015 where Jeff Rovin's son says he wrote all those books by just sitting with a notepad in front of the TV while his two sons blasted through NES games and beat them Lol. I didn't know that series was so great selling.
