Do you think chess is racist?

1976-nation-time-chess-set-black_1_7bf0200e6b4d377d5b9c58da04ff6f94.thumb.jpg.3d66031470077964efddb64615fc03b7.jpg

This is a pretty bizarre chess set from 1976.  It was marketed in an attempt to banish* white from the game (the ones that appear to have white parts actually have light yellowish ones.)

There is a totally invented history (at least from the history of chess as most of the rest of the world understands it) that comes with the claim that the game was actually invented in Africa (rather than India or Persia as is most commonly believed) - complete with brand new African sounding names** for pieces.

I have a couple of them - despite the bogus history made up of whole cloth they are actually fairly handsome pieces (despite being made of pretty cheap plastic) since they are really brightly colored.

Somewhat odd since chess sets that don't have white pieces have always been available - not common but readily available.

*IIRC the little "history" booklet/instruction sheet is pretty blatant about this.  They neglected to eliminate the white squares though and the instructions still (properly) align the board from one of the white squares..Go figure.

**SInce I have  had these since way before the internet and they are in storage I am not sure if they were just African sounding names or real names from an actual African language.

Edit - here is a decent picture of the pieces:

Did you even read the article?

Nobody actually thinks that, they were just talking about it.  Some guy went on a twitter rant too.

You keep ranting about SJW woke warriors, when nobody around here is advocating for anything like that. Most of the vocal people here are just about equality.

If you want to rage on snowflakes*, go to Mother Jones or Huffpost.

Does this sound ridiculous? Sure it does. That's basically what a white person voicing an ethnic character sounds like.

No that's Apu trying to sound like a stereotypical American.  That is not what he normally sounded like.  And I really feel sad for Apu's now ex-voice actor...up until a few years ago he must've been so proud to have been doing one of the most iconic characters on one of the greatest shows of all time...but now because a bunch of SJW killjoys came along, now he feels forced to walk the "racist walk of shame" 😞

I remember back in the 80s when the main killjoys were the radical Christian fundamentalists who thought things like rock 'n roll, D&D, and even playing card games (yes even the non-gambling ones) were works of Satan and were the ones who tried to censor/outlaw adult films and music albums and such.  Now it's the radical left SJW's who are going out of their way to spoil everyone's fun 😞

Okay sometimes it wasn't the SJW's, how about that Super Size Me guy who ruined the good ol' days of McDonalds when you got your money's worth on your fries/soda (and sometimes got special cups with b-ball/football/'Tunes characters!) and now they do that stupid pinching the bottom of the box crap 😞  Or how about liberal D's like Joe Lieberman and Tipper Gore back in the day trying to censor video games and music respectively?

Hm what else gets people all up in a tizzy nowadays? Covid-19. Is it all one big made up scam? How woke are you sheeple?

At what point does certain food stop being a certain type of food?

Like...is cake a kind of bread? or are hawaiin rolls a type of cake?

Is cereal a kind of soup, or is a bread bowl a kind of cereal?

Is a strudel a kind of sandwich, or is a gobbler a type of pastry?

...if a hotdog is ground meat and spices in an intestine casing...does that make you a type hotdog when you eat it?

Yeah our luck finally ran out in my apt building...we did in fact just have our first Covid-19 case 😞  Hopefully he/she will or has recovered.

I honest to goodness for the past few years was wondering if we would see cries of chess racism (as the vast majority of checkmate examples in books has the black king 'mated).  Hey if you want black to be superior, that's what checkers are for!  Black always moves first and the checkers only move on the black squares! 😄

Or if you want an example of true racial/color equality, try backgammon!  Each player gets their own set of checkers/dice in black or white and the dice determine who goes first and the first move!

Mississippi lawmakers vote to remove rebel emblem from flag
https://news.yahoo.com/mississippi-set-remove-confederate-emblem-050056539.html

I'm surprised it took them this long.  Forgive me if this makes me sound wishy washy or something but while I would be the first to stick up for those like the Duke boys, Hank Williams, Jr, Alabama (the band not the state) who did at least at one point use the flag who clearly did so only for pride in being from the South and never had any real hint that they were racist in anyway...and people who really love that flag so much can continue to use it for their own vehicles/rooms/flagpoles and so on just like any other form of free speech (indeed, some may in fact be using the rebel flag as a symbol of free speech)...BUT...

I most definitely don't think a flag from a four year wannabe secessionist country from over 150 years ago really belongs on any official state gov't kind of thing...flag/seal or otherwise.  Our 50 states make up the United States of America, not the Confederate States of America.

Heh -  no one every really explained it to them.

When I was young it was the extreme fundamentalists who wanted to banish Halloween.   Now a totally different part of the  spectrum wants to do it by the application of lingchi.  Anytime the wackadoodles on the far extremes agree on something you know there is something rotten in Denmark.   A pox on both their houses.

It’s unfortunate they were in the party but if you think that was fully accepted you’d be wrong.

You never did give an opinion on my favorite song. I guarantee you the singer is NOT a republican.

*shrugs* I didn't really feel much about it one way or the other...what did you expect my opinion to be? 😛

I wanted your opinion on the lyrical content. Since you were against laws against hate speech. When you read it you said it and the Southern Strategy just sounded like insane ramblings.

I was hoping for a critique or reaction to the contents, well I can’t be surprised at what I got instead.

See you on the wrong side of history, then.

And that's a company deciding to provide alternate versions of their games in response to specific markets. You can still uncensor the game in that market if you chose to do so.

A far cry from getting rid of an offensive stereotype.

It isn't a far cry from an "offensive" stereotype because both are people dictating their morals for others. That is what you could've been playing now if people like that got their way in the US. In fact a lot of entertainment that you like and take for granted right now only exists because people before you paved the way by either doing or defending something controversial but had they listened to you and only done what was none-controversial a lot of things wouldn't have been made. Simpsons wouldn't been having this artificially created so-called controversy about Apu because the show wouldn't have existed. It countered those wholesome family sitcoms where everyone is friendly all the time and lives in a happy family.

You feel sorry for Hank Azaria? Why, because he does one less voice on the Simpsons now? You know he voices like 20+ characters on the show right?

Simpsons actor Hank Azaria says he'll no longer voice Apu: 'We all agreed on it'

“We all made the decision together. We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and feel good about it.”

‘The Simpsons’ star Hank Azaria on why he quit playing Apu

“Once I realized that that was the way this character was thought of, I just didn’t want to participate in it anymore,” Azaria said to The New York Times. “It just didn’t feel right. I didn’t want to knee-jerk drop it if I didn’t feel that was right, nor did I want to stubbornly keep doing it if that wasn’t right,” Azaria said of that era. But then I started thinking, if that character were the only representation of Jewish people in American culture for 20 years, which was the case with Apu, I might not love that,” he added.

You, @cartman and some others here always bitch about "the left" creating an issue where there isn't any. Well there is no issue here! Quit making it into one! The change doesn't affect you in any way, and it doesn't make the show better or worse. Hank didn't lose his job and literally the only thing to come out of this is the removal of a stereotype, which is NOTHING BUT GOOD.

The creators and the voice actor were provided a new perspective that changed their outlook. You'd do good to do the same once in a while.

If we accept these things, what will we complain on the internet about?

So because I want less racism in the world, it's going to result in pop culture becoming bland?

You do know when there was more racism, there was bland stuff like Leave it to Beaver utterly dominating pop culture, right?

I'm not against controversial subjects or edgy humor, but there are certain things that we no longer need. You can still have Apu, just voice him by an Indian guy. There are funny Indian voice actors. Boo-hoo, the creators will have to search a little bit harder. Maybe take a few more dollars off the mountain of money they bang supermodels on to fly someone from Mumbai over.

Jesus, you literally act like being nicer is going to result in some 1984 scenario.
