What's the 'obscure-iest' game you played as a kid?

The game that came to my mind was Clash at Demonhead. I remember adoring the game and not knowing (at least to my knowledge) anyone else in my classes who played this when we were kids.

Not really that obscure, but I guess Guardian Legend. I found it in a bargain bin and remember thinking I bought a zelda-like and was disappointed when I popped it in and saw a straight up vertical shooter. At the time I thought shooters were crap (what an idiot, right), so I promptly returned the game in favor of Solstice.

When I was a kid, nothing really. When I got a bit older I discovered this crazy thing called emulation, played all kinds of unusual games. This was my first experience with Pocky and Rocky, which is a fantastic game, as well as the Parodius games which are equally fantastic.

For SNES, I had both "Captain Novolin" and "Packy and Marlon".

For NES, I don't know that I ever knew anyone else until I was an adult that had Swords and Serpents or Astyanax.

In the NES/SNES days I played mostly well-known games, as that was all I had access to.
The closest I ever got to playing obscure games as a kid wasn't before the 64 era. But that's only if games like Buck Bumble and Vigilante 8 counts.

When I got back into games I tried to remember one I used to rent all the time when I was a kid. I knew you played as a machine and could invert gravity to walk on the ceiling, it was a really fun game. Once I realized the name was Metalstorm and I saw the price, I got pretty disappointed.

I didn't think about Air Fortress, but yeah, that is another one I picked up as a kid from the bargain bin and played the hell out of without knowing anyone else that ever owned it.

Off the top of my head would be The Immortal on NES it took me what seemed forever to learn the pattern on how to fight the dragon at the end.

I wore out Pac-Man on our Atari and even got to the point to where I just would stop playing a game, rather than dying. I’d get bored after an hour (or whatever) of gameplay on a single game.

My brother and I played Anticipation a bunch until we had every challenge memorized and then it was basically a game of speed and who could hit the button fast enough once the clear patterns were presented for any challenge.

Either way, those games aren’t obscure but considering how Pac-Man is universally considered a bad port and Anticipation is just mundane, it’s unusual that we became “experts” at those games. But, eh. We played what we had.

Winged Warrior (DOS), A Day at the Races (Win 3.1), Bike or Die (PalmOS). I'm sure I could think of some games really no one ever played if I dug into my memory banks, especially obscure shareware from CNet or PalmOS games.

If Plok! counts as obscure than that would be my pick. Also, Breath of Fire 2. It may have been somewhat common in the US, but it was and still is quite rare in Europe and I never met anyone who had heard of this, let alone have a physical copy.

Then later, through the wonders of emulation, I got to play a bunch of SNES RPGs that were never released over here, such as Seiken Densetsu III, Chrono Trigger, EVO, 7th Saga and a few others.

There was also a time, when no one over here knew what Shin Megami Tensei or Persona was, not even the store clerks at game stores. I had to spell it out so that they could find it in their computers and tell me whether they still had it somewhere.

I never played any of the Oddworld games, but I feel like I hear people talking about them constantly. They seem especially popular in circles of people who aren't normally big into game (ie. nerds).
They seem like they'd be right up my alley, too. Very high on my endless to-play-list.

I had Desert Falcon for the 2600. It was much better known on the 7800 (and a lot better looking/playing.) I also had Sea Hunt for the 2600, which was a rerelease by a couple of different companies.

Ninja Boy 2 for GB. No one knew about this game. 

I also played Swords & Serpents on NES. I think I've only heard it mentioned once. 

From the days when I would buy stuff just because the cover looked cool.
