Sega CD NTSC US Collector Guide

Recommended Posts

Not my guide, but SegaAge got taken down and this is basically the only thread I regularly visited there and it's not hosted on GoCollect. Copy/pasted selected posts:
Backed up from: http://segaage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=42&threadid=176402

Edit: LOL I didn't realize @final fight cd was a member here, sorry dude. Here's a link to the latest thread:

U.S. NTSC Sega CD Collector's Guide Version 2.0.

Changes warranting a new guide:

-Consistent updates:  Yes, developments in the world of Sega CD collecting are pretty sparse, but new items are still being found.  Shai'tan did a great job with the original thread, but a more active member needs to take the reins.

-Documentation of more than just the games:  Games and variants are cool.  But so are strategy guides, console boxes, game inserts/contents, and accessories.  Let's hear about any physical media associated with the Sega CD.

-Replacing missing pictures:  Most of the pictures from the original thread are gone.  They will return.  Hopefully.  Maybe.

-General overhaul:  Not to say Shai'tan didn't have a nice looking thread, but this is likely going to look and be constructed slightly different from the original.

So let's keep the discussion, albeit slow discussion, going.  If you opened a sealed game, post what you found inside the box.  If you find the elusive Bram Stoker's Dracula Version 2.0, post a picture of it.  If you just want to say you love the Sega CD, let's hear about that love affair.

Always a work in progress....

Variants/Demos
About half of the variants come from console pack-ins, while the other half are re-releases with some sort of sticker addition, change in box material, or altered box art.  It is the general consensus the common Wonder Dog Green is the variant, while the ever elusive red box is the original.  Sega CD/32X combo games not included.

Unofficial Releases

Most of these unofficial releases were previously slated for an official release during the system's lifetime.  It appears some are full blown games while others are mearly betas.  Does Marko and the Smurfs contain the code for the intended US release or are they repros of the import versions? Dunno.  Most of these games are - or were - sold through Gooddealgames.  Collectors are paying a premium for sold their 'sold out' games, such as Marko, which in a way makes them the "official unofficial" publisher.   Homebrews and hacks are also included in the list.

1.) Battle Frenzy - gooddealgames.com - sold out
2.) Battletech: Gray Death Legion - gooddealgames.com - sold out
3.) Bug Blasters: The Exterminators - gooddealgames.com - sold out

Console Boxes
What actually is included with each release is speculation.  Was Joe Montana's NFL Football NFR included in the Sega's Sports System? Of course it was.  Which color variant of Compton's Interactive Enclyclopedia was packed with what X'Eye?  Now that's a little tougher of a question.

OTHER NEAT POSTS FROM THE THREAD:

Here's a scan of a Batman Returns score I found a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to find much about it - it appears Gracenote has it in their DB though (but FreeDB, musicbrainz, etc. do not). It has a different track count and track lengths from the CD-DA on the game disc.

And here are some additional tip books and the Pitfall strategy guide (with Sega CD/32x specifc content)

I have a Loadstar strategy guide on it's way I'll scan and post.

I've also come across the Official Sega Genesis and Game Gear Game Strategies books (Corey Sandler, Jason Rich, etc.). I don't have any copies of those (yet), but will post if I find them.

I've just started reading the Sega CD Sourcebook, but so far it's really interesting and provides a reasonable amount of information about how Sega was pushing the system at the time.

zHQRy8c.jpg

There it is. As opposed to the Sonic CD NFR which came with an appropriate sized manual:

VEtuza0.jpg

As did Ecco and 5-in-1

BKhfguU.jpg

Just for fun another shot of the 3 Sewer Sharks together. All 3 came in a jewel case with a common manual as best as I can remember.

0CgMzMT.jpg

Money shot of all three Compton's discs. I never owned the slip case for the blue text variant, but as best I can tell it was the same for all three.

G0Rukm9.jpg

HOWEVER, the manual I had with the blue copy was different, so there's that to look for.

7rXiLjw.jpg

I also know you said it's difficult to determine which versions came in which X'Eye box, but anecdotally: my red box came with Prize Fighter, Compton's Black text with a small yellow slip for a free update when the first rev was completed, and Top Hit Sampler while my blue box came with Prize Fighter, Compton's Red Text, and Top Hit Sampler.
m73eaxH.jpg
Are there actually two versions of this? The manual says one thing while the slipcase says another. The two pictures in the first post look like they're showing the same thing.

Vkzwzdk.jpg

I can't answer for Joe Montana because I never owned that particular console complete, but this is the 3rd Sewer Shark console I've owned and they've all had a generic CD jewel case.

I do have a Joe Montana NFR somewhere around here and I'm pretty sure it's in the same jewel case, but I couldn't tell you if that's normal.

@supergamboy You had lots of great threads that only live on in Google Cache and possibly internet archive right now. Are you interested in posting them here? Internet Archive sometimes misses pictures so I'd like to save this stuff before Google Cache goes down. (Edit: If you save the thread specifically in Internet Archive it looks like they're good)

Here are internet archive links to some other good threads:
Sega Club Collecting Guide
Konami Genesis Collecting Guide
Acclaim Genesis Collecting Guide
Canadian Genesis Collecting Guide
Namco Genesis Collecting Guide

Hey guys, glad to see those threads/guides recycled here!  And good that they're still viewable on Internet Archive.

Here is the link to my spreadsheet, which I am am still updating from time to time (mostly, slowly converting to the old format to the one I'm currently using):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IKheEp9_Ww1YFwj_1MvMF_1Vw8Ed6nksmDy9-BfA9nQ/edit#gid=0

I do plan on creating a new thread here on VGS to accept additional input on variants or other inserts I might be missing.  The spreadsheet captures sealed games that have been verified, variants, print runs, etc.  I haven't had time to be thorough, but the plan was to fill in all of the data to allow things to be sorted by "1st print" or "cardboard only", things like that.
