  1. For me, it was probably the original box art painting for Crazy Taxi for the Sega Dreamcast. It finally came to fruition in 2023 after chasing it for more than 3 years. Its a nice, big impressive painting for an memorable game, and one of a very small number of Dreamcast pieces that would have actually had painted art. By ~1995 everything was already transitioning to digital!
  2. In another thread, user @Enternal posted some questions about games being sold in Australia and maybe the UK that had a "Sega Approved Import" sticker on the cases. They wrote: From my limited research there are a small number of titles let's say 25 (I'm guessing here) but you see the same ones, with Rolling Thunder 2 being one. They are Sega Genesis carts that got exported. These were possibly only distributed by Virgin Record Stores in the UK and Australia. And likely only games that did not get a mega drive release in their country. They were stickered prior to distribution then sealed and appear on the insert. (You can see this on the Ys III insert outside of the case)." So I went ahead and did some digging. I looked through about 7,000 active listings on eBay Australia. I didn't look at completed or sold listings. I probably should have filtered just for Australia-based listings, but I forgot. I haven't searched anything for the UK. I probably don't plan to! Ha. I saved pictures of everything I found and will maybe incorporate them below or in a linked album. So I'll kick off a research thread and if anyone cares, go ahead and continue it and use this thread to document any findings. Findings: All of the games that received this sticker are US version games; some of the games did also get a Mega Drive release (such as Bubsy II and Rolling Thunder 2) The stickers all on on the outside of the case (both clamshell and cardboard boxes from Accolade) I found no Electronic Arts or Acclaim/Flying Edge games that had this sticker I only found a single Sega-published game that had this sticker (Jurassic Park); however, Jurassic Park got an official release in Australia, so I suspect this was a case swap or re-case Here is a list of 3rd party publishers on whose games I found the sticker: Absolute, Accolade, GameTek, Kaneko, Koei, Namco Razosoft, Renovation, Sunsoft, Taito, Takara, Tengen, Tradewest For Sunsoft, Takara, and Koei, I only found 1 example each. The Namco one is an image Enternal provided There is nothing to indicate that these were imported for sale at a single store (such as Virgin Records). I did notice a LOT of rental stickers on games that had the "Sega Approved Import" sticker. But that may just because dirty games with a ton of stickers just sit on eBay with high prices and don't sell, which is good for data like this research set, but may not mean for example that "rental stores imported these games" I'm not sure whether the publisher had anything to do with the export process for these games. If so, I'm surprised that a company like Mentrix (Championship Bowling) would have done so. The list below may have other errors based on case swaps. I think I saw one game that also had a Australia ratings sticker added. But now I can't find the picture If you're collecting say US games, I would not view these games as variants that should be pursued. As the sticker text implies, these were games imported for sale in Australia (maybe the UK also, I haven't looked) List of games (alphabetically, with publisher noted). 3. Thanks for the catch on Richard Scarry's Busytown. I updated that to be Slidebox and not clamshell. Basically when I was first creating and populating the spreadsheet, I think I had it all default to Clamshell and then I had to manually update the variants, so that one got missed, despite my own Sega Club guide you linked to
  4. Fun to sign onto VGS for the first time in a long time only to find one of my old guides hanging around the first page of General Collecting Discussion! It's been a long time since the days I was refreshing eBay all day for new "sega genesis" listings. That's how I ended up identifying and documenting so many variants. But even then I would have been just watching US listings, so I can't say I've come across those before. Edit: I did some research and put together my findings in a new thread here: Of note, this sticker is on the case, not the paper insert, as you seem to imply. In addition, I found nothing indicating that these games were then "sealed" -- do you have a picture of a game with the import sticker that is also sealed? In any case, feel free to toss any response or findings in that other thread. But I would NOT view these games as a rare sticker variants. They were US games that just got a sticker as part of the process for the game to be sold abroad. Not something for US collectors to track down, but maybe more of a project for Australian collectors (who already have LOTS of cool variants to hunt!)
  5. Necro bump, as I found your post while searching for Walter Carzon! Nice pickup goonhoon! I'd started a game art thread awhile back and apparently after your post and also after @Bronty's arrival 6 months late haha. So looks like you beat me to the punch but I clearly didn't use the site enough to find yours So here's my belated contribution, one of my recent pickups. This is a preliminary sketch by Greg Hildebrandt for the poster that was packed in with Civilization IV: Gold Edition: For anyone that comes across this thread, the Facebook collectors group that goonhoon mentioned above has since been renamed to the more straightforward "Original Video Game Artwork Collectors," with a URL that has also been cleaner and more simple: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ovgacollectors If anyone's curious come and join the conversation on FB! And I'll try and check back in on VGS from time to time, but like Bronty I'm sure to be belated! ha
  6. Bumping this up for @Sega Steve--Fun to see my own guide has lived on that a few new ones have been discovered. Streets of Rage II and Biohazard Battle are great discoveries! Big shout out to @Ampplays
  7. You mean this one? That's actually not Drew's work! If you notice off to the right side there are the initials "BE" for Bill Eaken (William L. Eaken), but definitely still an awesome painting.
  8. One thing we're working through on the site is a balance between adding images to the site (so that people find it or want to frequent it, or sign up and use the forums) and keeping it collector-focused. The Dragon's Lair piece is a great example. It original sold on Heritage Auctions (link) but the image on OVGA was actually uploaded by the owner, which is what we want: actual users sharing their art and helping form a community for those that are curious to join and ask questions. But your mention of Drew Struzan is a good one. A "Drew Struzan" Facebook account (official but not actually Drew posting) shares his work and Galactic Gallery handles original art sales, so lots of logo/text-free images of his work around, including for games. Those could be added to OVGA's gallery, but we don't want internet images to crowd out the images owned by users. So in any case, where we've landed is to 1) prepare a written biography for an artist like Drew and lay out their game work so that OVGA is an information resource, then 2) we might add to Additional Images some examples of that artist's work (generally avoiding when we know the owner of a given piece) without crowding the gallery. So after your mention of Drew I added one of his Indiana Jones images and one for Star Trek SNES. Link to the OVGA bio for Struzan: https://www.originalvideogameart.com/video-game-illustrators/drew-struzan-b-1947-r194/
  9. Pleased to hear you like the site, man! Its a site I help out with, uploading some of my own art and curating a lot of the artist biographies, but the genesis of it all was @ibrahim_uk! Ibrahim launched the site late last year after working it for more than a year. Testing and refining daily as we hone the vision and see how users interact with the site. Gonna keep working with collectors to add their art as we build the site as a resource! Among the pieces on the site, I particularly appreciate the art for games that were ultimately unreleased. For the most part that "art" generally went unseen, relegated to a small thumbnail in a game preview, at best. Here's the art for the unreleased NES game Drac's Night Out: https://www.originalvideogameart.com/original-video-game-art/unreleased-drac’s-night-out-nes-box-art-r423/
  10. Mark Fredrickson's paintings are really really exceptional. Here are two other close-ups! And below I'll link to another one of his game works. Mark also did Tail 'Gator for the Game Boy, but since its such a rare box not a lot of people have even seen that image before! And even if you had the printed box is so small that its probably hard to see all the wild action going on. 11. Hmm, let's see if the image quality is better by linking to an image-hosting site versus the attach file option on VGS Looks much better. I'll update the primary image in the first post
  12. Hi all, I've been around VGS a bit here and there, mostly in relation to a Genesis CIB contents spreadsheet I (used to?) maintain. But I'd been on NA/SA under the username molotovwars and then supergamboy (Korean name for the Genesis/Mega Drive). In any case, along my collecting journey I went from collecting CIB games to sealed games to now collecting original video game art. It was topics on NA/SA that first exposed me to game art. I think most of us back then will remain the long thread dedicated to Greg Winters (of Mega Man series fame), first guessing the artist and then identifying all of the many many titles he illustrated. Another memorable thread was on the passing of Greg Martin (Sonic, Pac-Man, Flintstones, Adventure Island), and if I recall that story got picked up across the internet, all linking back to NA. A lot of minds were blown when a sealed Stadium Events was part of the trade for the NES painting for Panic Restaurant. Those threads taught me a lot so I figured I'd start up some kind of thread to share some my own art and for whatever conversations and questions this thread leads to! Here's a big, beautiful painting I haven't yet shared elsewhere. Top dimension is over 30" I think. Mark Fredrickson's painting for Brutal, released for Genesis, Sega CD, SNES, and other systems.
  13. The biggest generalized answer I can give you is the impact of "culture" on collecting. On one end of the spectrum, you've got Japan, where many items were collected intact with easily lost "obi" spine cards, secondhand games packed in "plastic bags" for resale to protect condition, that kind of thing, and probably (generalization) a culture that cherishes their past media (anime, games, etc). I'd put Korea on the opposite end of that spectrum. Maybe because I lived in Seoul I have a slightly different perspective not applicable to all of Korea, but I was left with the impression that it was a society that didn't keep things. I'm sure you could say that for a lot of the world, but this area of Korean history is quite fascinating in that these Korean published games only existed because of Korean laws against products from Japanese companies -- so instead Hyundai distributed for Nintendo and Samsung distributed for Sega. Its hard to say how much "stuff" was kept from that era in general. A separate generalization: Koreans do not buy things second hand. I'm sure it has changed a little bit now, but when I lived there and talked with Korean colleagues, there was little second hand market for cars in Korea. No one wanted used, only new, so at one point another guy that I met (a foreigner), his primary business in Korea was exported used Korean cars to Africa because low demand in Korea and a decent arbitrage opportunity. In any case, lots of generalities and fcgamer could probably make similar points for the rarity of products he collects out of Taiwan. But I would certainly say that if someone wants to buy a PAL Zelda (acknowledging there are a variety of variants and some maybe specific to certain countries, some harder to find than others) you'll have a hell of a lot easier time than getting Korean copies. To @darkchylde28's response, are they just as rare inside the country as without? Hmm, I mean I guess I'd say the in-country desirability is very high. So there are more copies of Zelda within the country than have made it out, but if the copies in-country are in collector hands it going to be as if they weren't available and I expect the price that other Koreans would pay would exceed what foreigners would pay. I think that desirability exists now because it didn't previously and there are so few surviving copies that its almost a thing of "national pride" to preserve the games now. Certainly the language barrier and Korea being less interconnected to online marketplaces in contrast to say PAL territories contributes to the scarcity of the items as well.
  14. I lived in Korea from 2009 to 2012 and collected and sold a variety of Korean version games. Back then a local collector market was forming and by now the demand for these Korean versions may be higher in Korea than abroad, even France. The nuance I suppose is that among Korean collectors there is a greater feel of which titles are scarce and should be paid up for even if their foreign equivalents are dirt cheap. Little Mermaid for the Korean Sega Mega Drive was a title I only found CIB once. The Korean collectors I knew had never found it. That was a $500 title 5 years ago when I sold it, where as virtually no foreign collector would pay that price as it would be hard for them to have the confidence that the title was actually scarce (as the desirability is otherwise limited). In any case, I'm mostly commenting as the Zelda titles are particularly exceptional to have CIB. Those were $1000+ titles a decade ago. I never had a chance to own them then but also wasn't willing to put out big money for a bounty or to chase them, but others did, even then. Now, I'd treat them as name your price kind of titles. $5,000 start, but your buyers aren't here on VGS, more likely in Korea or a few high-end French collectors, but it will take true effort to learn the buyers and collectors and get the lay of the land in this space (Korean collecting).
  15. Its been too long to remember for Lightening Force. For Pele, it was probably the white sticker that I marked as verified (especially as the poster mentioned that maybe the yellow sticker was over top of the white sticker), but that's just a guess. For Barney, the sealed copy I opened was definitely the color manual one. Very cool to learn about that eC ESRB variant. That's new to me!
  16. Thanks for staying on top of updates and other feedback received in the thread @billybob884! I've been pretty removed from Genesis collecting for awhile now, but since I started this spreadsheet a few years ago, Google Sheets has vastly improved. I was now able to really easily add "Alternating Colors" for the rows in a way that will be automatic and update as new rows are added to accommodate new variants added. The spreadsheet had a handful of cells in golden yellow. These I think marked things that needed additional information, such as naming a "Sega Reg Card" but not specifying which one. It was an imprecise system. Before changing the alternate colors above, I made sure to change the text color of those cells to red. Happy collecting, all!
  17. Fun to see this post! No idea about the inserts for each of the CIB releases, but I did just pick up a sealed Sunsoft copy to pair with the original box art painting of the game! I don't think I'd realized that there were two releases! Do you know the difference between the two or why it had separate publishers? I imagine the Data East release was first then the Sunsoft later?
  18. Fascinating, so I'd always thought that the version without '95 was the first print. But you guys are thinking they might have dropped the '95 in a later print to keep selling it past 1995? How shitty, haha.
  19. Here is an old thread of mine regarding Pele: https://connect.gocollect.com/discussion/160360/pele-two-releases-yellow-text-cart-accolade-ballistic In the case of Pele, when the Sega Seal of Quality sticker was introduced (presumed later print), the cart label was actually drastically updated. Now that I'm reviewing Pele I think it might also have 3 releases: 1) Soccer ball offer 2) no soccer ball offer 3) no soccer ball offer + Sega Seal added (new white label cart)
  20. @DefaultGen Great find! I've added an additional variant to the spreadsheet. So for right now I have it as the 1st print has the "TV special" star flash and later print does not. I haven't yet added Sega Seal vs. no Sega Seal of Quality. But I think you're right that it's three releases. I recall that Accolade was one of the companies involved in a lawsuit with Sega, I think over its cartridges. I haven't looked at the timing of anything, but it could be that the Sega Seal of Quality sticker was added after the first print. So it could be that this is the first print (no Sega Seal): https://www.ebay.com/itm/CIB-Bubsy-in-Claws-Encounters-of-the-Furred-Kind-Sega-Genesis-1993-Complete-/133638943327?epid=4775&hash=item1f1d80725f%3Ag%3AtdUAAOSwk8pgAiAf&nma=true&si=CrhKqmmsCcGKONexu1vt%2B4i5FGE%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Then the Sega Seal gets slapped on post-lawsuit. Haven't investigated yet, just throwing it out there
  21. Ha, awesome @Cobradvs! I've missed plenty a Majesco reg card because of the way they are inside the manual! Your copy of Sonic 3D Blast should be 100% CIB - congrats! I've marked both the fliptop and variant slide box as Confirmed CIB of needing just a Majesco reg card. @billybob884 - For that Golden Axe variant, I updated the "Notes" description in Column D to say "MD Cart & Alt Manual"
  22. Great, so I've added that variant to the spreadsheet. I can see on the back of the box that it is marked "Printed in USA; Assembled in Mexico" And actually, there are appear to be three releases. 1st print = slide box with no "origin" text on the back of the box variant 1 = slide box with "Printed in USA; Assembled in Mexico" on back variant 2 - flip top with "Printed in USA; Assembled in Mexico" on back Did you check inside the instruction manual to see if there is a Majesco reg card? And can you take a picture of the back of the cart? EDIT: It's not on all of the releases but here is one variant slide box that does have the Ballistic sticker: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonic-3D-Blast-Sega-Genesis-1996-Complete-CIB-Rare-Original-Authentic-/193723106850?hash=item2d1acc0622%3Ag%3At78AAOSw-tBflMpG&nma=true&si=CrhKqmmsCcGKONexu1vt%2B4i5FGE%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 EDIT 2: And as expected, here is the variant slide box that includes a Majesco reg card: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonic-3D-Blast-Sega-Genesis-1996-COMPLETE-Game-w-BOX-amp-MANUAL-The-Hedgehog-/224263503362?epid=4639&hash=item3437257e02%3Ag%3Awv8AAOSwVYZfyXmg&nma=true&si=CrhKqmmsCcGKONexu1vt%2B4i5FGE%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 I expect that both variant releases will include the Majesco reg card only, but its something we can keep an eye out for!
  23. @CobradvsCan you please provide a few pictures of the flip-top version of Sonic 3D Blast? If you can, include phots of the back of the box, the front and back of the manual, and back of the cart. My guess is that it is a Majesco re-release that the only included insert would be the "Majesco Sales GENESIS Classics" Reg Card. But with some pictures from you, I'll be able to add that flip-top to the spreadsheet. @DefaultGen I haven't had a chance go to go through the Accolade stuff, but awesome start!
  24. Hey all, made a few updates: - Added in the Caesar's Palace ESRB K-A Clamshell re-release - Marked as verified two sealed games ViKiNg opened: Wheel of Fortune (1st print) and PGA Tour 96 - Added in poster for Boxing Legends of the Ring - I cleaned up the Pog information a little with a new format of "POG: front / back" - Added a note (and image link) on the Topps 1988 cards included with RBI Baseball 93 @DefaultGen: I added the two different copies of NBA Showdown '94 (1st Round), but you can help me with some information. They have different EA Sports-Wear inserts. I believe the posters are actually different too. They both have the sports equipment image, but I think they have different backs. Can you check for me? If there are additional "product codes" we can add for the EA Sports-Wear insert, that would be awesome (but not sure if they are marked) Also, for the pogs, can you confirm what is on the backside of the FIFA pog. Is it blank or does it say "EA Sports"? I plan to eventually look over galacticlint's information on the Sonic card included with some MegaHits games and likely Sonic Spinball, but need to look it all over more carefully
  25. Hey @ViKiNg! Yeah, I haven't kept up with the spreadsheet much of late As I'm not actively collecting games or pouring over new eBay listings my attention has dropped a bit. But send me a PM, I'm glad to expand edit access. I know you've tracked the project for a long time and know what kind of edits are right for the sheet, etc
