TurboGrafx LOVE (and all NEC love in general)
attakid101 replied to tbone3969's topic in General Collecting Discussion
This post aged pretty well haha Some of you may know that I recently lucked into a decent Turbo collection. At first I was thinking of just reselling it but now I think I want to check out more of the library and maybe build on the collection a little. But I kind of feel out of my element. Turbo collecting is more complicated than I thought! I have questions: Did all TG16 games come in cardboard boxes? I see games listed as CIC—are these considered complete? What’s up with the jewel cases? Are they the same dimensions as standard CD cases? Do they have back art? What’s up with the spine labels? Are they original? Aftermarket? What about the inside of the jewel cases? I know there’s an internal component that holds the HuCards in place. How can I obtain that component? Do I have to cannibalize other games to get it? Suppose I don’t want the cases, how should I store/display my games/manuals? Which console version should I get? Game recommendations? Here’s the thread with my find for reference: Thanks, folks!- 325 replies

Hey guys! Looking for a few TG16 games! I don’t have any feedback on this site but I’ve had several transactions over on NA. I’m sure a few of the nerds around here will vouch for me. WTB: Jackie Chan Action Kung Fu Bomberman ‘93 New Adventure Island THANKS FOR LOOKING!

Looking for TV required for Exertainment Bike Commercial version
attakid101 replied to oops's topic in Collector's Questions
I own this as well. TV is original as far as I can tell. I’ve only ever seen two others before and both had the same model TV as mine. I’ll PM you when I get a second to check. -
TL;DR — I picked up a TG16 collection but the Express doesn’t work so I can’t test any of it. Any advice? Over the weekend I went to a local toy convention with my daughter. It was pretty cool but we’re not super big on toys so really we were just browsing. I came upon a table with a Turbo Express on it. I’d never seen one in person before! The guy had a $750 price tag on it which I thought was insane. I had no intention of picking it up but it was still cool to see. I looked at it for a minute and put it down. I left the booth and after about an hour we were ready to leave when the guy with the Turbo stopped me and asked if I was interested in it. I told him I couldn’t afford it and besides, I don’t own any TG16 games. That’s when he pointed to a ziplock bag on another table that was filled with Hu Cards and manuals. The bag wasn’t even on the same table as the Turbo Express so I didn’t notice it before. I’m not a TG16 collector. But after looking through the games I saw a few that I recognized. I decided to make an offer and ended up picking up the whole lot for $500. Here’s the problem. I bought the lot as is. The guy who sold it was just a middleman. He works for a company who buys up estates and resells. He never tested the unit and didn’t have any batteries. But he gave me his business card and said I could return everything within 30 days if it didn’t work. Well guess what. The Express powers on and the screen lights up but no picture. So now I have all these games but no way to test them. Is there a way to repair it? Any recommendations on who I should reach out to? How much should the repair cost? Thanks everyone!

TL;DR I paid $200 for a rare Pikachu statue and I’m not sure if I should have it restored. I told this story back on NA, so forgive me if you heard it before: So we’d just dropped my kids off at practice and we’re driving home. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye is spot something big and yellow and adorable. I immediately shout at my wife to stop the car. Before she’s fully parked I jump out to confirm the sighting—sure enough it’s the very rare Pikachu statue alleged to have been used to promote Pokémon Yellow. This thing is just sitting in the entrance to some random building. And I do mean random—this place is an Odd Fellows museum….yeah. When I get back to the car my wife is understandably confused and annoyed. I explain to her what I found and why it’s cool, and she just stares at me like I’m an idiot, then tells me that this freaking statue has been there for years… YEARS. This is crazy for 3 reasons: this thing is legitimately rare It’s only 5 blocks from my house How has nobody picked this up? The wife goes back like a week later and finds out that the owner set the statue there because the museum is a Pokémon Go stop. So that explains that. She asks to buy, dude agrees, she pays $200, and Pikachu now lives in my basement. I love it. It’s in pretty great shape except for one thing, years sitting in a window have left it a touch sun faded. I’ve seen people restore these and they end up looking really great, but is this one of those things that’s better left original? I don’t mind spending the money to get it repainted but I don’t know if that’s the right move. What do you guys think?

There’s been a lot of recession talk floating around here in the US. If we actually do dip into a recession, what do you suppose that will do to the market for collectibles? Will we see lower game prices? Will collection values tank?

I will never understand the demand for reproduction crap. Can’t you just pretend that you own the box? Make believe and reproductions functionally serve the same purpose.

Apocryphal Retro Gaming Stories
attakid101 replied to T-Pac's topic in General Collecting Discussion
Legend has it that the Earthbound press kits that Nintendo circulated were delivered in Mach Pizza boxes. Today, most of the individual pieces of these kits have been found: keychains, newspaper clippings, the ruler, gameplay still frames, official press release, etc. But to this day there is no verifiable evidence that the pizza box ever existed. If this pizza box were to ever surface, it’s discoverer would undoubtedly be crowned Grand Duke of all Geekdom and have first rights to all the babes and pop tarts therein. -

Metroid Dread Collectors Edition availability

thanks @ICrappedMyPants, just got mine ordered! -
Recent pickup. This game is tough to get into. It’s hard to control, even with the 3D Pad. Plus there are several graphical and camera issues. Definitely for collectors only in my opinion. QUESTION: The back art of my copy is kind of wavy. I also noticed this on my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Is this a common thing? What other games have this issue?

I’m with you on the $$$ thing, but I can’t bring myself to buy fake games. I’d rather just emulate. The Satiator may be a good option for you. It’s got a high cost of entry but it’s plug and play. Plus when compared to the rest of the Saturn library it’s not really that expensive…hell, I paid more for my copy of Resident Evil.

Another Capcom pickup just in time for Halloween season! Honestly I think this game is overvalued. Especially considering all the better versions available on other consoles for cheaper.
