  1. I found NA one day because I was making 'custom' labels for games that were beat to shit in my collection. My first thread was about some of the labels I made and it didn't go over all that well (a number of members calling me out on why it was sacrilegious and how a heavily damaged label was still better than any new, non-authentic label). The one thing that saved me was I wasn't going for a 1-to-1 replica, but I learned all that from that thread, so it was a good learning experience and discussion. That was like 15 years ago and I'm still around. One thing I realized over the years, is that the people who were usually nasty to new collectors, were typically just angry (or very opinionated) people who always seemed to be in the middle of controversy or arguments, even when it involved seasoned collectors. Even myself, I was quite critical (mainly of new games) and often negative online and it was other crabby people that made me realize no one wants to read/hear that shit, so I try to limit some of my negative opinions both online and off. I also think people forget how much they learn and know when they are really into collecting. People on NA would often criticize people at swap meets or yard sales that didn't really know what they were talking about thinking that everyone involved in video games should know as much as them... seeing with "NA glasses" is how I used to think of it. You gotta start somewhere and a lot of people just want to play a few games that they had when they were younger or ask a question that would be obvious to someone in the collecting community. I'm not nearly as involved as I used to be, but rarely see any of that around here.
  2. I've got a non-sealed copy but I had to buy a newer cart because this one freezes all the time on the reaper level. Honestly don't even follow this stuff now it's so ridiculous.. this doesn't surprise me at all.
  3. I really liked the demo. Like the few new ideas like the compounding weapon upgrades and dash. Art style is still not my favourite and there is quite a bit of screen clutter especially compared to older entries making it tough to see what’s what sometimes. Maybe I’d get used to it with more play time. I was gonna pick it up until I saw the price. Over $50 with tax in Canada lol. I’ll be waiting for a deep discount on this one especially since the game runs pretty poorly.
  4. A little hard the head but some good stuff in this show. George Liquor and the Man’s Best Friend episode may be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life.. ever. I still go back to that episode regularly.
  5. meh 4... the uncontrolled spinning through space got old after about 2 min and the rest of the movie was forgettable.
  6. Didn't like the design of this one. Kinda slow and odd graphic style that doesn't really go well with the run-n-gun genre in my opinion. 5.
  7. I sing Holiday Rd. in the car but change the lyrics to local streets... "Kearney Lake Rooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddd oooooooooooooooohhh oh oh oh..."
  8. Hey folks, thought I'd share this old home video my sister's friend, Judith (the one in the thumbnail), found over the holidays at her parent's house. We never had a camcorder and I don't remember this so it was pretty cool to take a step back into our life in 1995 when my sister randomly shared this with us today - it hits different than an old picture. That's me, Pete (8 at the time), at the start of the video holding onto the Super Metroid Guide, sucking my thumb with my Raider's getup on (remember the shorts sewn on over the sweat pants??) and my brother, Neil (12), playing Super Metroid. Anyway, my sister, Anna (14), takes us on a little tour of the house (shaky cam lol - sorry) and then ends up showing off her bedroom which is hilarious. From the TV setup, the clothes, the phone, to the appliances and setup of my sister's room, it's a real blast from the past. A shame I didn't say anything but that's what happens when you suck your thumb all day! (Make fun of me all you want... It was a bad habit that gradually faded when I was like 11 or 12). It's a little slow in the middle but less than 5 min. total. Enjoy. (video is unlisted so may have to click the link).
  9. There is a marathon here in May and I might try to do the half. My main motivation right now is kicking the liquor. My drinking increased significantly during the pandemic and, although moderated a bit, I am still drinking way more than I should from this past summer through the holidays. Between the money and health aspect, it's definitely time to give it up or save it for the odd special occasion. We'll see about the running though as I would also like to focus on building and maintaining my mass but just with a significantly lower fat %.
  10. I think when collecting blew up in the early 2010s, full set collecting was just part of the fad. I'm not saying people didn't collect for full sets before (or after) but there were a lot of collectors back then who were gobbling up games as fast as possible to get a complete set and let their wallet lead the way. This is where I think it got muddied a little with bragging rights as it was almost a race for some. There are even a few people I knew locally who complete full NES sets within a year or two (minus SE) and 64 even more so. I couldn't imagine starting fresh today on basically any set, especially CIB. I respect the grind for those continuing on their journey though.
  11. I wanted to go for a cart only SNES set about 10-15 years ago but then someone on NA offered to sell me 200-300 filler games and it dawned on me that it wasn't for me. Once NES/SNES and 64 stuff became stale and overpriced, especially locally, I moved on to collecting a full Wii U set which I still have. I might try to dump that in one go here in the future but we'll see. It was a fun little set to collect as there are a few oddball games that I was able to get cheap at retail and the used market was abundant once the Switch was announced/released.
  12. I think 'jank' controls, lack of saves/lives, and cryptic game design made NES games tougher overall, especially before the internet. Some games for NES you can spend 20-30 min getting to a spot and waste all your lives on a tough jump/boss in less than 30 seconds just to potentially get back there and do it again... you just don't see that much after NES. Those game designs also lead to more frustration and worse play, rather than starting a a tough spot with infinite tries. I fully agree that games are more about the experience now. A general trend as graphics improved to focus more on story telling, exploring, and immersion for the player and less on actual challenge.
  13. Yeah, it's completely broken in Mario Kart 64... one of the reasons that games slides down my list on MK games. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, 'bagging' was a legitimate strategy where you'd hang WAY back to get two overpowered items and then abuse them on certain tracks (bullet bill, star, etc.). Apparently this was just patched in some form with the last(?) update. F-Zero for SNES wasn't far behind... your lead could only get so big before the computer more or less teleported to keep up. Lots of similar things in sports games, especially for the arcade. NBA Jam becomes almost impossible as your lead grows which is programmed into the game. I always remember Mortal Kombat (MK3/UMK3) becoming easier with each continue as well (fuck you UMK3 Jade). Bowser in Mario Golf does the same with his shot percentages going through the roof if you're ahead with only a few holes remaining. I also believe that a lot of online games throw you a couple easy matches upfront to get you engaged before skill based match making really kicks in.
  14. I used to get a kick out of the 'Finder Keepers' on NA when people would post a high tier game only to find out they paid full retail. I get the excitement of getting new stuff but it missed the mark in that particular thread imo. I liked when people found expensive stuff for cheap because I've been there and it's pretty exciting and fun to share.
  15. Can't believe you found anything game related in a thrift shop for less than $5
  16. No. If i was in financial trouble and didn't sell I would feel guilty but we live comfortably. I sold a few sealed games with the WATA craze because of the money involved and those items becoming a liability but wouldn't have felt guilty if I decided to keep them. You also realize how quickly a few hundred or even thousands of dollars goes **poof** after you sell some games.
  17. Easy 10. Love this game and put a lot of time in to it and I could still get better if I wanted to put in the effort. Amazing game for the first input of the franchise.
  18. I feel like half the school had this game when it came out. Everyone was discussing strats on the Water Temple after Xmas break. Funny enough, the one part I got really stuck on was finding Saria in the Lost Woods because I didn't read the text and just moved on to explore every inch of the map until I figured I needed to go back to the woods. The temples are great in this game but the child quest is pretty boring after playing through the game a few times. Still a great game I like to revisit. I think I still have the promo stuff like stickers, gold shopping bag, etc. from release.
  19. This is the new Nintendo way to get everyone involved and experience a game, particularly little kids. A lot of their games have this feature either with an option or invincible character these days. That doesn't bother me at all when there is still a hard mode or doesn't impact the game outside of that option. What I dislike, are games like Mario Odyssey where they obviously watered down the difficulty of the game to make it more accessible. I agree that it gets to a point where I personally wouldn't see a point in playing, but there are people out there where they may just want to get through a game with as little effort as possible. There's a reason I didn't play a lot of action games in the last 20 years... mash this button, run to this clearly marked spot, mash this other button to fight, go to this clearly marked objective, etc. etc. Mind numbing game-play.
  20. 5.. I always found it hard to get into these types of games.. not sure why. The combat system just didn't excite me when I played this one. It wasn't bad but it's not something I'd go out of my way to play.
  21. The Mask, Ace Ventura, and Dumb and Dumber all came out in '94 which is insane!.. then Ace Ventura 2 came out in 95, so, yeah, not totally surprising that the shtick was getting old by the time Cable Guy rolled around, especially since his character was deliberately annoying. Only thing I liked and really remember about The Cable Guy is when they go to Medievil Times and he does the 'Silence of the Lambs' joke with the chicken skin and then the Star Trek fight music impression when they get into the sword fight. Overall though, definitely my least favourite Jim comedy I'd say.
