Game Boy Color??? Don't mind if I do!

Rules:
- Games must be started and finished no earlier than January 2, 2022, EST.
- No cheat codes, game genie codes, glitches etc. may be used
- Emulation is allowed, but no save states, altered roms, or any advantages over playing on original hardware. (Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player are allowed.)
- Game saves and passwords can only be used if they are obtained from a fresh new game, started this year.
- Photos are not required, but they're fun.

Scoring:
One point per game! This thread will not reset at the beginning of the year.

Requirements:
    - 100% completion is not required, thus the default or “normal” difficulty is typically fine.
    - Definite ending or credits screens are king. If a game has a “bad” ending and a “good” ending, the “good ending” is typically required.
    - If a game loops indefinitely, only one loop is required.
    - I have no data on requirements for these games, so we can research and add them, game by game.

Games that exist as a grey cart:
There are a handful of GBC games that are simply re-colors of their black-and-white counterparts of the same name. To the best of my judgment, I've listed which games are identical across generations, so that beating one may count as beating both. The info is in the big table below.

The table also lists whether the game is a black cart, clear cart, or rumble/special cart.

Sesame Street: Elmo's ABCs is done.

I had to get in quick with this one, as I knew there'd be a rush to tackle what has to be one of the best games on the platform.

Being serious, though, I can see how very young children would have enjoyed this at the time. Elmo is well animated, juggling and cartwheeling in various cutscenes. The game itself has 5 mini games. The easiest just requires the player to match a letter from a selection with the one Elmo highlights. Then it mixes upper and lower case.

After that, the games require the player to spell 3 letter words or find a letter from a pool that can be used to complete a word. There's nothing taxing here for anyone over the age of 5 or so, but it would be a fun way for young children to gain confidence with letters, I suppose.

Each game ends with Elmo hitting the bell on a strength test and having fireworks go off to celebrate.20220103_095430.thumb.jpg.219b85a1f0709e39af663c19b3bb8261.jpg

Sesame Srreet: Elmo's 123s is done.

This time there are only 4 mini games, but there's more variety between them. We also inexplicably get a sci-fi theme. So if you've ever wanted to see Elmo using a jet pack, here's your chance.

The games are based on counting and rudimentary addition or subtraction maths. Nothing taxing for anyone but the very young, but the target audience would no doubt get some enjoyment from this.

What was challenging was getting a photo before the cutscene ended!

So how does one "beat" the Singer Sewing Machine Operation Software?   I think the Infogenius software was pulled from the GB list.  Might be worth pulling this one too.

hah, I forgot about that one. I almost put "embroider Yoshi onto a sock" but I agree it's better to just pull it.

You know... if you can design them in the application, I say do that (but not require it to be sewn unless the player has one.)

I like the way you think.  Anyway, I have the cart but never booted it up.  I should look into this.

Mary-Kate and Ashley: Pocket Planner is a glorified (and useless) PDA. You have to keep the GBC on in order for it to work, so you'd need a lot of batteries.

Anyway, there are actually 4 mini games included. I've done the slide puzzle and memory game. I've won on the "fash machine", but the last game "drop to shop" is a Kaboom rip-off. I've made it to level 11, and can't tell whether there's an end to it. It just gets stupidly fast by that point.

Anyone know whether it's possible to actually beat that game?

Singer Sewing Machine Operation Software completed.

I was going to make Yoshi, but you have a 20 line limit and you can't even outline him with that. So I made an SMB Star power-up, which was the easiest game inspired pattern I could think of. Does this count? Probably not, but it's the most use this cart will ever get, so I had to justify my former $60 purchase somehow.

  • The title was changed to Beat every Game Boy COLOR game - 5/445

Finally managed to beat Mega Man Xtreme. It took three(!) playthroughs to get this done. In the first playthrough you have to beat 4 robot masters from X1 and X2 and then do the Sigma stages and beat Sigma. After that you unlock hard mode where you can keep your progress and beat four more robot masters, but you still have to do the same Sigma stages and fights again. This sort of unlocks the "true ending" to the game with X and Zero taking a lond overdue break.

After the credits you unlock yet another mode, the Xtreme mode. Here you have to fight all 8 robot masters, but without the previous progress. So you basically start from zero. Otherwise it's mostly the same. I think only the final Sigma fight got quite a bit tougher. Also, in this mode there is no story, i.e. no cutscenes, which is a really nice change of pace. After all, I'm not playing Mega Man games for the story.

After the credits of the Xtreme mode are over you get this special message from Sigma saying that he will always return as long as there is evil in people's hearts. I guess that this is the final and true ending of this game. It took me over five hours according to the in-game clock. A very long playthrough and the repeated Sigma stages got really tedious during the later playthroughs. However, the game is still quite fun even if it's a downgraded version of Mega Man X1 and X2. It's also quite impressive what kind of graphics were possible on the GBC. What suffered the msot however was the sound. These tunes pale in comparison to the SNES originals. It's not even funny. I've also been wondering why they had to port a SNES game instead of creating a completely new Mega Man game from scratch.

I think I've now truly finished Mega Man Xtreme 2. Like in the previous game you have to beat this one three times: once as Mega Man against for bosses, then once as Zero against for other bosses and finally with both of them against all eight bosses. Plus, an additional Sigma stage opens up to fight against the true boss and to get a better ending. After that you unlock a boss rush mode, but I hope that I don't have to do this one as well. I already spent a lot of time on this game already.

It should have been better than the previous game and technically it definitely was. For example, the screen transitions were now instant without the obvious loading time which was nice. Also, you can play as Zero and can collect "DNA Souls" to buy upgrades that you can switch around. This is a great idea in theory, but practically it was pretty weird, because I could make my standard shots or sword slashes so strong, that I didn't even need the special wesapons anymore. They just became too weak or inefficient compared to the standard attacks. Furthermore, they eat up more weapon energy than in the previous game and if you wanted to decrease that, then you would have to buy and equip an upgrade, that halves your weapon energy consumption. Unfortunately, you have limited skill slots and wasting an entire slot just to waste less weapon energy seems rather silly. So what's even the point of Mega Man, when there isn't even any incentive to use your special weapons?

Then there's Zero. At first he might also seem like a pretty cool character. That is, until you realize that everything and everyone is shooting at you from afar while you have to walk up close slash them with your sword. This feels pretty awful. And to add insult to injury most bosses had HUGE hit boxes as if a giant invisible square was surrounding them. So you didn't even have to touch them to get a lot of damage. Now imagine having to go up close to even hit them. Therefore playing as Zero felt more like punishment than actual fun.

Another major issue I had with this game was the overreliance on cheap instant-death traps. A common criticism that I hear about Mega Man games is that you have to memorize the levels and that you can die instantly at so many parts of the game. It was actually refreshening when later games in the series reduced these instances. However, Mega Man Xtreme 2 dialed these instant death traps/walls/etc. up to eleven. For example, you have to navigate floating poles while constantly trying not to touch any of the walls or the ceiling or else your isntantly dead. This is even worse when you can't even fully see what's up above or below you, because the screen is so small that you can't even see the instant death walls or floors. Then there were multiple instances of floods of water coming out of nowhere and killing you instantly. So you had to know when these occured and quickly search for a wall or something to cling to in order to survive. Those floods also took their times so you had to always wait before you could go on.

Maybe these issues don't bother other people, but to me all of this dragged down the fun parts of the game. So I personally can't really see myself going back to this game anytime soon. I'd rather replay the regular MMX games on the SNES. They're more polished (or at least X1 and X2 are) and much less repetitive, i.e. you don't have to beat them several times. They rehashed a lot of old stuff and tried out some new things, but the overall experience is not quite as great as the source material, imho.

I see that you've added the clear conditions for the Mega Man games. Just wanted to say that you could write the same for the second game as for the first one, i.e. somethin along the lines of "Unlock and complete Extreme Mode for the final ending".

I've also started playing Pokemon Crystal as this is one of the versions that I've never played before (similar to Emerald and Platinum). I'll be chipping away at it slowly since it's a really long game, so someone else can of course finish it up before me. Still, just wanted to give a heads-up since there are so many different Pokemon versions on the GBC.

I'm disappointed in the "DX" mode. R-Type I and II were both good and amazing on the GB, respectively. However, with the "color upgrade," there is significant slowdown in the R-Type II stages in DX (7-11).

They also decided the 4th boss of R-Type II (stage 10) should fire a bunch of bullets. I'm cool with the idea, but in practice, the chaos and the limitations of the hardware make a significant number of bullets invisible (but still deadly).

Oh well, I guess I'll stick to the GB versions in the future.

Good luck to whomever takes on SMB Deluxe. I finally 100% cleared my cart a few years back to make up for the inability of my younger self. Getting everything takes a decent amount of SMB skill and know-how.

...Unless clearing just boils down to the old "beat bowser" in which case should take a skilled player maybe 10 minutes 😛

  • The title was changed to Beat every Game Boy COLOR game - 9/445

Just finished the Pokemon Trading Card Game as I needed a break from Pokemon Crystal. I'm also only just five gym badges into the game, so there's still a lot before me. As for the Pokemon TCG I actually had a blast playing it except for the occassional moments where I had really bad luck. While this game is pretty cool it's also very much based on luck. So in some battles I might have been lucky and obliterated the enemy in 2 to 4 turns whereas in other battles I had little chance at all or lost due to unfortunate circumstances. Or in one expecially annoying battle the enemy would throw two exeggcutes at me which may not sound intimidating, but they have a 100% chance of putting you to sleep. So even if they didn't attack me they would put me to sleep constantly and prolong the fight to a 15 minute match or so of constantly falling asleep and desperately trying to get an attack or two in. So yeah, I wished that this game had a little bit less luck involved.

As for my deck, I won the game with a fire/water deck that was surprisingly effective. I even got really lucky near the end as I managed to defeat the top four and the rival all in one go. This might seem trivial, but a) with the luck involved and b) all of them having very strong unique cards made this actually extremely difficult and exciting. At the end of the game I now have 202 cards out of roughly 226. So I could continue the game a little bit more and try to get the rest.

So overall I was really pleased with this game and had an absolute blast for roughly 90% of the time. I wished that the second game had made it to the west, as that one has seemingly even more cards and more creative challenges, where you have to construct certain decks to fight against certain bosses etc. Or maybe a modern take on this game for console with some sort of story or career mode and maybe even different formats. The PTCG is so cool, but feels underutilized, imho.

I was in high school when it came out and I remember playing this game a bunch and beating. I played MtG with other kids at school, but no one was really playing with Pokemon cards then. I picked it up a last year to mess around just because I love the music so much and I couldn't even make it to the first gym battle. I got wrecked by RNG a few battles in a row and I gave up pretty quite.
