Pocahontas is done

This was surprisingly fun.  Like Hercules and Mulan before it, the emphasis is on adding as many frames to the movements as possible, which sacrifices fluidity. Thankfully that didn't hurt the game that much as this is a puzzle platformer. There are only really 2 enemies in the game and you have to find ways to avoid or distract them. 15 levels, some of them honestly last 10 seconds. A few are escort missions where you have to work with your raccoon friend to reach the end of the level (swapping between you and him). Helping various animals gives you different abilities, but some are not noticeable or maybe only used once. I didn't have the manual (and did not look it up on gamefaqs) so I might have had a bit more trouble than others would, but I really enjoyed discovering the different control schemes or button combinations needed to get through everything. The music was enhanced for the Super Game Boy so it sounded great. The story was very lackluster. A couple quick moving sections of dialogue, but it certainly didn't fill me in on the movie I've never seen. The ending was just "game completed" and no written happily ever after summary.  Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the short time spent with this. So far, only Aladdin is better of the GB Disney movie games I've played in my life.

Next up for me is Godzilla.  Hoping to rescue the King's son this week.

I'm probably about half way done with Godzilla.  I'm at a room that should lead to a perfect crossroad point. In one direction is 10 rooms covering the rest of the left hand side. The other direction has more rooms circling the center. No idea where that kid is hiding (and don't want to know in advance), but if I get stuck in the corner, I can avoid some backtracking work with the password I took down.  My big fear is that I left a 4 square thing in the bottom right and maybe I'm spinning my wheels chasing both of these directions and I'll have to backtrack a ton.  I honestly love the uncertainty of this maze mechanic so far.

Sounds like you're really close overall if the last level is 4-10!  I'm usually prefer the method of slamming my head against the wall non-stop until the light bulb in my brain finally goes off, but I hear taking breaks can work too.  Haven't played any of the 3 in that series but they seem intimidating.

Yep. Almost there, but you're not kidding, this game went from, "oh, this is neat" to "omfg...this is impossible" really quickly.

Just do yourself a favor and don't start up Hyper Lode Runner after finally beating this.  That one starts at impossible and ends with "who thought this would be fun?"

Very cool. Sounds like a nice variety coming up. I've only played two of those so far: Toxic Crusaders and Tail Gator, but enjoyed them both. Tail Gator was a huge surprise to me as to how fun it was. Toxic is one that I expected to be bad, but was competent enough.  I think both took me around 3 hours each.

That's how Kwirk was. 15 or 20 of the 30 puzzles were pretty or very easy comparatively, but the others really ramped up the difficulty. I spent what seemed like 90% or more of my playthrough on the 10 puzzles I took the longest to solve.

I can't speak to Amazing Tater, but the nice thing about Kwirk was the level design; they made it really easy to see what you had to do, but made reverse engineering the later levels hard. It's not terribly different from the mindset you need when playing Catrap, just a different viewing angle. I think if you're good at one, the skills transfer well.

I agree with this. Catrap really helped prepare me for this one, in a way.

Well, I remember playing a ton of Catrap as a kid and loving it but not being able to figure out most of the levels. It's been decades since I've tried, though (and will be a few years before it comes up in my personal challenge most likely). And Godzilla has taught me that I tend to really overthink sequence of events puzzles.

Speaking of which, Godzilla is done!

Who's signing the petition to have every game end with "Thank you, Daddy?"  I know that the Japanese version of the game is superior in every way, but I had a lot of fun with this puzzle "platformer."  The maze mechanic was certainly unique, and surprising to find in a Godzilla game, but I loved that it added a bit of strategy and luck to the playthrough. Unless you're looking it up, you don't know which direction gets you closer to victory. Keep a healthy supply of past passwords ready to go at key branching points. That way, if you encounter a dead end, you can just start over from that point instead of solving the same rooms over again to back track.  It's really strange that Godzilla has a giant human fist for his attack (it could easily have been a sprite of fire breath) and I really wish he moved faster, but those are minor grievances in a pretty solid effort.

Next up for me is PGA European Tour, which I'll start up on Monday. If it's as easy as PGA Tour 96 was, it might only take a day.

Finally beat this bear of a puzzle game. It went from “cute” to “this is impossible” really fast. I wish there had been more levels where you switch between characters, like Catrap, but overall super challenging and addictive. I have photos in my camera roll for every level password. I think I’m ready for a platformer next. Lol.

Working on Spud’s Adventure. I guess I’m just in a potato mood. 😄

So far, it’s a bit dumb and you can game the health system pretty easily by finding an enemy that respawns quickly and just spam killing until you have full hearts. The bosses are tough though due to terrible hit boxes.

PGA European Tour is done

OTr2rjS.png

Exact same victory screen as PGA Tour 96 (except for the custom SGB border if you're playing it on SNES). I looked at my screenshots from that win and I ended the 4-day tournament with -16 for both games. As far as I can tell, this plays exactly the same as Tour 96, and the only difference would be the courses offered. But it's been nearly 3 years, so maybe there are some differences.  It took me about an hour of practice to fully get used to the mechanics, but each round of 18 holes takes less than 45 minutes so it wasn't hard to knock out the full tournament once you get the hang of things if you don't mind the repetition. If you want to space it out, the game offers passwords after every hole so you can ensure your path to that winner's circle.

Next up, I'm playing Alfred Chicken.

Well, early review of Alfred Chicken is that it's not my type of game.  It's one of those experiences where you will die a lot to learn enemy placement and new mechanics, so you progress a little further each run. There's some variety in the levels which is neat, but enemy placement means jumps could be death if you haven't seen it before.  Also there are secrets hidden around the level in fake walls and also in spikes, so if you want to find more stuff, you might need to die a bunch to explore each chunk of ground.  There is a possibility for a continue (I've only unlocked one after beating the first boss, and it might have been because I found an item in the level before fighting him?), and there are chances for several lives, but things get punishing pretty quick.  I made it to level 6 and pretty sure I softlocked myself. I'll have to check my stream replay to see if I can find the different path.

It reminds me of Yogi Bear's Gold Rush in that the secrets are super obtuse. The difference is that the normal game was easy so hunting for secrets became the fun. Here, the game ramps up in difficulty quick, so going off the path you know feels doesn't seem worth it (but may be necessary).

Ouch. Sounds like a hassle.

I'm currently playing Bill and Ted's Excellent Video Game or whatever the name is. It's actually pretty fun. I was NOT expecting it to end up being a puzzle type game. About halfway through now though. Many lives, continues, and passwords are its saving grace.

I've been playing around with a bunch of games from the T section of the library, (Turok, Taz-Mania, Talespin, T2, True Lies) but I haven't beaten any yet. Really makes me appreciate the ones that give you passwords.

@Floating Platforms nice job FLATPLAT on PGA European. I have it in my head that European's golf mechanic is my favorite one on GB. I either haven't ever tried 96, or there really is something slightly different about them. Guess I better check!

@withfoam I fired up Bill and Ted a couple years back, and I liked it until I got to a level I just couldn't get past. That's all I remember, so best of luck on whatever level that was!

How is True Lies? I have a weird penchant for 90's movies that they turned into video games. Especially movies where it was totally inappropriate (looking back, having kids now) for kids to have a tie-in pushed to them. LOL. I'll collect them all together one day and make some long-winded post about them somewhere. 😛

I'm halfway through on B&T so far. It gets harder for sure and you have to die several times now to understand what reactions collecting each piece may have on the level. That's a frustration I have so far with it.

Bad, lol. The only way I can find to make any progress is to avoid everyone completely. If you engage in a shootoff, you'll take damage, and there just isn't enough health to go around.

Ah yeah, I remember that now. You have to figure out the right order to collect all the pieces, and the only way to know is just to start guessing. And there's less wiggle room the further you get.

Okay, I found what I did wrong on level 6. It wasn't a softlock, I just didn't interact with the enemy in the correct way. I needed to divebomb him to ride him up and I didn't try that. There's a conveyor belt thing in that room and I assumed there was a block I triggered that prevented my ride from coming down the belt.

Bill & Ted reminds me of that old EA C64 computer game. I can't think of the name of it, but it's something like Jumpman? We had a version with a wizard and magic spells, but you hit the dots/torches/whatever and it will activate ladders or give you a spell.  That was fun at least. Why couldn't that be on Game Boy?

I think I've played all of these except T2 (assuming you're talking about the platformer version). All are pretty good. I think only one boss in TaleSpin gave me trouble, but the rest of the game is manageable.

I know you said you don't like it, but I enjoyed True Lies quite a bit.  It did require a lot of level learning. You can kill everyone if you want but it's about inching forward until they are partially off-screen and then shooting where you know they are. Most won't shoot back and you can kill them.  I think I did end up looking up how to do a couple of the bosses though. The GB screen is too small for them and they will shoot off-screen and you have no idea where to aim.

I've now completed half of the GB Golf games. It's been a few years since I've played Tour 96, but the only thing I can think of that's different here is the putting might be tougher on European? You have to hit it center on the second A press otherwise the ball will drift left or right on the green, even without and slopes. That probably existed in '96 as well, though.

I liked True Lies GB too. It's very methodical and very fair. The one major annoyance is that they implemented passwords for every level, but chose only to give them to you on alternate levels. Kind of a dick move on a portable platform; it's not like there was a massive Game Boy rental market that had to be hedged against!

Meanwhile I tried Jeep Jamboree, but man, that game is a painful slideshow. I was able to do OK in earlier races but as soon as the track gets cluttered it's an exercise in misery. The win condition is "Win the Championship race season on at least intermediate difficulty" -- is that because there's a known ending on that mode? The manual (which is garbage) doesn't mention anything about it and the available playthroughs on YouTube don't reach 1st place at the end. The Short or Intermediate seasons might be more achievable.

That's only the requirement because of the generic "Normal mode or higher" rules. I'm open to updating that requirement because I can't get very far in Jeep Jamboree. The common theme here lately is that I can't get very far in ANY game. 🤔

I think I've shared it before but here's my copy of JJ:
