Rather, I think the exercise of finding one which could actually benefit from a sequel is actually pretty interesting. Some times at least one sequel down the road among a series of really bad ones happened to be a gem in the rough, though often for completely different reasons than the original movie. Both Halloween, Friday the 13th and even The Exorcist have shown examples of that. Maybe they even took the original concept and just subverted it completely. Gremlins 2 is one such sequel, and it's amazing, though it also pretty much relies on being a comedy, rather than a horror movie. Evil Dead 2 is definitely an example of a sequel that surpasses the original movie, but that one also happens to be both a remake and a complete shift in tone, so it's hard to really pin it as a traditional sequel. Aliens is a great movie, for sure, but I'm also one of those people who think the original Alien movie would have been better off without any sequels despite that, it just works too well as a singular story surrounded by mystery. It didn't need to have its universe any more fleshed out. And they certainly didn't need to bring back Ripley three times.
