There are in between print runs where everything stays the same except for the dates on the chips of the board...then after October 1987 things really get crazy with the introduction of date codes on the manual and box. I think WATA did a great job introducing the world to variants, but they were about a year short for discovery of what a *true* print run means for the NES. Why someone wants to pay $114k for a mid production SMB, is beyond me, but there had to be at least two people bidding to get it that high. A 9.6 CIB 5th production sold for $2880 back on March 6th. I get that for whatever reason people prefer console games to PC, but are we really going to pretend the Call of Duty Finest Hour, the "first console COD" actually had any kind of historical relevance, lol. It's not even considered part of the main series, it's a spinoff! What's next, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, the first console Battlefield game? The Sims on PS2, the first console Sims game? It's not the price that gets me so much as people essentially trying to rewrite video game history to pretend this is important. The 8.5 oval seal Mike Tyson's Punch Out is at $14k already. You could get a 8.5 CIB for under $1000. I just don't get paying that kind of a premium to get something sealed. Sometimes you just send in stuff to see how it will grade and learn the scale. If I were a "rookie investor" in video games and trying to learn the scale, what better way than to send in junk titles (probably bought under $10) and under the select tier ($25 or $35 a game?) and see how it grades. Then just send it to an auction and hope to break even. I can fully understand the motives in your first paragraph, with trialling of the grading process on a cheap game. The second paragraph “someone looking for a quick buck” for a crap cheap game to sell on HA and expecting profits is nothing else but lunacy.
