The SNES Rankings - Finished!

Recommended Posts

Mixed feeling on KI as well. So true that the game was always just... Around. I never liked it as much as street fighter or MK but the combo system, music, and announcer where awesome and the game had a cool, industrial vibe to it. Even though it was a pretty big title and promoted to hell i am not surprised to see it miss the top 100.

Where's Earthworm Jim at?... Hopefully that pops up sooner than later. Polished turd.

"I don't know how many Samurai Showdown games there are"
"I don't know the names of the enemies in Power Rangers"
"I don't know how Alladin on genesis plays"
"I don't know if Breakout and Arkanoid are part of the same series"
"I don't know if Hook and Skyblazer are related"

Like do a bit of research or send me a pm 😋

Nice reviews, looks like you are finally into the pretty good section of the snes library, right before the truly great stuff

Also, there's multiple Koei games in the top 100, and multiple strategy games in the top 50.

So, I resemble that "not into the genre" poke 😄

Inside the top 200 is pretty good too

Can you post the list of 150 games you haven't ranked yet?

I was thinking in the opposite direction for Romance of the Three Kingdoms II, though I wasn't going to bother saying anything about it, but after seeing your tirade, I'll mention it here.  What the hell is that game doing this far up the backwaters of the SNES rankings?!?  No way is ROTK II not in the top 50 SNES games; it's easily the best strategy-sim game on the console.  But, what it comes down to, is if the guy doing the ranking isn't into a particular genre of games, then that genre ain't gonna git no luvin'  ...sad but true... 😞

Hells yeah!

I think Reed's trolling and he'll end up revising to put at least 4 Koei games in the top 10

Hey, I made it a point to not have this read like a series of Wikipedia entries.  So I specifically don't look that stuff up.  It's all from my brain, so there's minimal outside interference or bias.  I've even avoided looking at my two SNES coffee tables books for that reason.

Or at least that's my story and I'm sticking with it. 😄

This is gold. I could name the top 15-20 SNES games that everyone knows about and already likes, but the rest of the SNES library is a brick wall to me. There are a few games in this installment that I definitely want to check out, and I never would have known about them. Can't wait for the home stretch.

Quick, everybody rank every game in the whole library for your favorite console!

How do you not have a Super Scope? Are you avoiding it on purpose? I'm pretty sure I've asked you that before, but from then until now, you STILL don't have one!

I don't know how to answer that.  I guess it never occurred to me that I could have one 🤔

Kinda like when Super Mario Odyssey came out and I suddenly realized that I could own a Switch if I felt like it 😅

Currently chipping away through the page with the ROT3K titles clumped together and see there's another.

I like what I'm reading, got me thinking of a few things.

You noted Lemmings 2 was better but maybe not, down to stage design tastes, but one thing I noticed missing, it was one of the games that quietly uses the SNES mouse to play which makes it very very much more approachable.  I only remembered it due to your "cheat" doing the Yoshi shooter with one on an emulator.  I don't know if you re-edit any of these ever, but I think it would be wise to point out the use of that as it really does help games out a lot when it is a choice.  I know it was mentioned on Civilization on SNES which is a great version of the game.

I totally agree with you on a couple others that get dinged or overlooked.  Mechwarrior, no one should ever argue it's not Jungle Strike with big robots, because it is, and you're just as easily killed trying to go nuts in it which you could get away with in Mechwarrior 2.

And Wolfenstein3D, I can not agree more.  I really wish I hadn't let that one go a few years back, but I mean I do have a kit.  If you put the utter annoyance of overkill censorship there, it actually makes the game standout because of that.  It is and it is not its own game.  Stages are all more or less there, a few tweaks, giant mutant rats, and the other stuff.  It's actually very fun, as long as you don't let the big swipes with the eraser bug you.  Plays smoothly too, controls as nicely as the original PC game using like a gravis gameport pad from the early 90s as I used to go between that and a keyboard.  People talk about mouse, but mouse blew in that, and in Doom, really wasn't good until looking around kicked in.

I'll end on this as I could do more...I've always found that Romance series and the genre interesting, but one I can not for the life of me ever figure out.  I'm not sure what doesn't click, but I can't make sense of half of it and just drags out to an inevitable loss which stinks as I like the subject matter there, as with even more so Nobunaga, and also that one off of the US revolutionary war with Liberty or Death.

I wasn't gonna respond, hoping to keep an air of mystery to it.

But that's 99% correct.  I'm flip flopping terribly on Brawl Brothers, and that may get demoted to the 200-151 ranks 😅

I'm just glad I didn't have to spend a half-hour brute forcing it, because I was totally going to.

One thing that's always interesting to me in lists like these are inferior ports. Should they be punished for being something that few people want to play in modern times? The Street Fighter II games are a perfect example. There's no reason to play the SNES games nowadays when the arcade versions are far superior. Granted, they're still great video games. They were great at the time, and they're also great compared to other SNES fighters. I guess it just depends on how you look at a ranking like this. If this were a smaller list of the top 50 or 100 games on the system, it would probably be easy to leave them off. But since you're ranking everything, it doesn't seem like a list of recommendations the way a "best games" list would be.

I'm also curious to see how you'll rank a compilation like Super Mario All-Stars. Again, it's something that could be lower for non-gaming reasons. But you don't seem like you would do that, so I'm somewhat expecting you to put it in the top ten.

@scaryice ...Or Ninja Gaiden Trilogy or Tetris Dr. mario...

It's actually something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately.

Regardless of what I do, someone is gonna screech

THESE NINJA GAIDEN GAMES ARE WORSE THAN THE NES VERSIONS

"Okay, but I'm only judging against the rest of the SNES library..."

Doesn't matter how many times I call that out either.  People are stubborn like that 😅

Eh I prefer Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.

Makes it easier given the way I get disruption and lack of time around here having the passwords.  Also the famicom style restored difficulty of the third game is sweet too.  Sure visually they are lacking a bit more detail and color one would demand of a NES to SNES conversion, but I just don't care enough to knock it.

I used to have years ago Tetris & Dr Mario.  I never got into them.  Despite the nicer audio and visuals, it didn't add anything of value I cared about.  NGT at least accomplished that much.

Great as always. Happy to see some love for super tennis, I played that game so much back when I was 20. Spike mc fang and fire striker were good games too, I sold my fire striker years ago but I still have that spike mc fang. Cool spot and Aladdin were ones I played a lot as a kid, though mostly on the genesis because my friend owned them. I picked them up myself years later for SNES.

I absolutely love reading these. I discovered various games as I am not that familiar with the Super Nintendo library. Of the games I've played, I completely agree with you (especially on the Mortal Kombat games).

I'll definitely recommend your list to anyone discovering the SNES library.

Thank you very much.

And a quick update: #150-101 are finalized.  All of the games are also beaten/retired and I have 30/50 mostly written up.
