Price Differences between VGPC & GVN for the NES

I've been wondering what are the key price differences between GameValueNow and Video Game Price Charting.

It took a while to collate the results since the two websites use different standards in naming conventions (Game Value Now's is superior IMO) but here are the results!

In general...

1. Loose NES games are 17.0% more expensive on GameValueNow
2. Loose NES games have 431 titles that are more expensive on GameValueNow (63.7% of the NES Library)
3. Loose NES Games have 246 titles that are more expensive on Video Game Price Charting (36.3% of the NES Library)
4. CIB NES games are 22.4% more expensive on GameValueNow (with one extreme outlier, FFF: Athletic World, removed)
5. CIB NES games have 504 titles that are more expensive on Game Value Now (74.4% of the NES Library) [NOTE: 4 titles have no boxes and do not factor in the list]
6. CIB NES games have 169 titles that are more expensive on Video Game Price Charting (24.9% of the NES Library) [NOTE: 4 titles have no boxes and do not factor in the list]

This chart is only good for today I guess, but I think it illustrates the key differences between the two price chart platforms.

Hell of an effort, so I take it from your figures the metrics that the classic retail go-to VGPC is the more inaccurate of the two.  Has to make you wonder how their bots are grabbing this stuff or excluding others to cause this.

VGPC is not that accurate these days. The sealed prices they have are a joke, and even loose and CIB prices are quite low on most titles.

EDIT: This is for all consoles, not NES specifically.

I 100% agree with @Gloves. Best source right now is the sold filter on ebay. Ive noticed a ton of games on both that haven't pulled data in some time and comparing the loose price on either compared to the current prices on ebay is mostly a laugh. Video game market value makes as much sense as GME stock right now. I'm actually happier when I find games I need at local game stores now because they price to PC or GVN and it is always less than whatever is on ebay. This doesn't apply for the auction based games but from my loose nes search those are few and far in between now. 

Edit: I don't mean to make it sound like the sites don't have value because I do use them everyday but I mostly use it as a sanity check to make sure I'm not getting totally screwed. The baseline has just jumped so far up that I can't expect to pay the prices I've seen on them.

You know I'm an unlicensed lover more than most unlicensed lovers. But for the purpose of the project in this thread I had to exclude them since they're all over the place.

Both of them suffer from a major problem, they include incomplete games as complete and they include more than just a cartridge as loose. If a listing has a cartridge and manual, my system sets it into its own category but these systems include it into one or the other, there's no cartridge and manual listing type.

Getting an average price for a game is difficult because:

• basing the value on the latest sale price could potentially be a really high deviation from the mean sale price.
• basing it on the average of the latest 10 sales could be 10 years worth of sales for really rare games.
• basing it on the average of the last month of sales could be just one sale for really rare games.

So do how many (quantity) games do you include and how long (time) do you include? 5 games? 10 games? A month? A week?

So what I do for my system is include the last 5 sales as the current price, and the previous 5 sales as the previous price, then give the user the percentage change with both current and previous prices.

My loose price for 10 Yard Fight is currently $5.11 which I think is more accurate because it includes ONLY cartridges and not cartridge / box nor cartridge / manual sales. 

My price for complete is much higher because you can see one crazy sale that took place. So what do I do about this? Do I include it? Exclude it? Currently it's part of the previous 5 sales. You can also see that I don't base my chart on average prices per month, I actually chart each sale price as an individual point which I think is of more interest to the user.

As you can see here, I differentiate between loose, complete, cartridge / box and cartridge / manual (among others).

And as you can see at the top here, some whacko paid $175 for a complete copy which throws the statistics way off. I'm guessing neither Game Value Now nor Price Charting include this sale.

Thanks to everyone that has helped me get to this point, it's not public yet but will be soon once I work out some more things (+300% increase is not correct). Please keep providing your date codes and opening sealed games to help with this project.

Understood, although I don't know if you're aware of this or not but the higher end unlicensed stuff has been far more stable price-wise than the higher end licensed stuff, both in the last decade before covid, and in the last 12 months since covid hit.  Awesome list either way, but I was hoping to see some particular titles that didn't show up on your list.

From my observations, I actually consider GVN to be more accurate for the rarer stuff, but the more common stuff seems to be a bit higher than it should be I think. They're both flawed, yet VGPC is used mostly by the game stores I go to so I think they're the 'defacto standard'

The thing is, I don't think VGPC and GVN can be paired for the unlicensed stuff since GVN (i think) separates the color dreams variants.

My price for complete is much higher because you can see one crazy sale that took place. So what do I do about this? Do I include it? Exclude it? Currently it's part of the previous 5 sales. You can also see that I don't base my chart on average prices per month, I actually chart each sale price as an individual point which I think is of more interest to the user.

 

As you can see here, I differentiate between loose, complete, cartridge / box and cartridge / manual (among others).

 

And as you can see at the top here, some whacko paid $175 for a complete copy which throws the statistics way off. I'm guessing neither Game Value Now nor Price Charting include this sale.

 

Thanks to everyone that has helped me get to this point, it's not public yet but will be soon once I work out some more things (+300% increase is not correct). Please keep providing your date codes and opening sealed games to help with this project.

 

The average between the two platforms is $5.97 which is much more closer to your platform's price. Adding in your platform brings the average down to $5.68 which is even closer.

I'm curious as to how you actually split CI, CB, IB from Cart, Manual, Box, and CIB though. You using some sort of image recognition or something?

 

Also, I think if there were 1 or 1,000 sales in the past week they all should be factored in, but as the prices age I think their weight should not matter as much. A $5.00 sale a month ago shouldn't weigh as much as a $5.00 sale today.

I have a CRON job that runs on my server every morning and pulls all completed sales from eBay into my database. Each morning I look at them and manually go through each one to correct the listing type and approve each one. Sales don't contribute to a game's pricing unless it has been approved by me.

Here are today's sales, I haven't done them yet.

I don't know about Video Game Price Charting but I spoke with the developers at Game Value Now and confirmed we are both using the same (new) method for pulling completed auctions. Prior to changing the method, all API requests would have failed and no pricing would be saved.

I've been looking at both sites lately to gather data points on pricing from pre-eBay sold listing sales, and noticed that 1. both sites do poor screening of bootleg copies from China (for all titles I checked, there were many in there; think $30 sales for $100+ games; and the recent ones with link to sold listing confirm that they're bootleg copies), and 2. quite a few recent sales, especially on the higher end, were not recorded. I can't extrapolate to the entire NES library, but for the games I checked, the values on both sites were undervalued compared to current eBay sale prices.

As for VGPC vs GVN price differences; I noticed that for sales where the items were relisted, the data was missing in VGPC, but included in GVN. Not sure if these were flukes, or whether VGPC corrects for relisted items and GVN does not... just an observation.

Yeah we can't always trust eBay sold listings to equate to transactions that have gone through to an actual buyer. So many sellers "buy" their own game just to relist it endlessly or bidders make some bs excuse that they didn't mean to bid. How much consideration do you put on market manipulation tactics and illegitimate buyers like these and beyond? Not sure what kind of measures could even prevent counting fake sales retroactively, maybe somehow tracking the sales for "seller has relisted this item" kind of activity but maybe some items would be relisted without that function too.

That's certainly true, but I do believe that we'd see items being relisted if "sold" to manipulate the trackers, and it seems that at least VGPC corrects for this. Some of the listings I was checking included missing values from prior eBay sales of my own at 1.5x prior sales btw. I haven't checked VGPC and GVN much, but when I do for specific titles, I still find them missing data leading to inaccurate, and in the current market undervalued, pricing. Curious to see what kind of product GoCollect will be putting out. I'm not a dealer, so in the end it's more vanity metrics than anything for me, but would be interesting to see how the market is truly developing. Curious to hear what other sources people are using.
