WonderSage.jpg.e2415a197360911b7707cd6282e42a88.jpgHello and welcome to the Video Game Sage Sega Spring Challenge!  Let's see if VGS can beat every Sega Master System game this Spring!  This challenge will be like the other VGS "beat every" challenges, but with a shorter time limit (March 20, 12:00:00 AM to June 19, 11:59:59 PM).

Rules:

Post the Sega Master System games you have played to completion within the time frame in this thread.  Pictures are encouraged, but not required.  No cheat codes, turbo controllers, or emulator tricks may be used.  I'll keep track of the total number of wins for each participant in the Wonder Sages section in the second post.  We're sticking to US released games for now.

Below is a list of unbeaten games along with their win conditions.  If it just says "Beat the game", it should have a pretty clear ending.  There are a few I'm undecided on the win conditions, which are marked with a question mark.  We'll figure them out as we get to them.  If you see any mistakes in the win conditions or think they should be different, please let me know.

Q&A:

Why the short time limit?

The Sega Master System library isn't very big, so I think completing it in 3 months is doable.  With a few dedicated participants, I think even under a month would be possible.

Are you going to do this every three months or every year?

No.  I have no plans to do this more than once.  If you're interested in participating, now's the time!

I'm not familiar with the Sega Master System library.  What are some good games?

Here's a mix of some of my favorites and some popular ones:

Alex Kidd in Miracle World & Shinobi World - Well respected platformers
Castle of Illusion - I haven't spent much time with it, but I've heard good things about this Disney platformer
Fantasy Zone 1 & 2 - Fun, colorful shmups
Fantasy Zone the Maze - It's like Pac-Man with weapons
Golden Axe Warrior - The Legend of Zelda clone that some consider better than The Legend of Zelda

Montezuma's Revenge - Great classic computer platformer
Phantasy Star - The RPG classic, might be a grind though
Power Strike - Popular shmup, first game in the Aleste series (which includes Musha and Space Megaforce)
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap - Best game on the system, if you ask me
Ys - Another RPG classic, might also be a grind

Are there any I can race through quickly?

Try Some of these:

Astro Warrior
King's Quest (if you follow a walkthrough)
Pro Wrestling

Snail Maze
Spy Vs Spy
Transbot

Zillion 2: Tri-Formation

Maybe some of the sports or light gun games?  I'm not too familiar with those.

What are some challenging ones?

Penguin Land.  It would be my vote for "least likely to be beaten" game. Nevermind!

Wonder Boy is another tough one.  If you're already familiar with Adventure Island, you should't have much trouble with it.

Black Belt and Space Harrier are pretty tough too.

Maybe some of the sports or light gun games?  I'm not too familiar with those.  I hear Sports Pad Football and Great Ice Hockey are particularly difficult because you have to use the Sports Pad trackball controller.

Any other questions?  Please ask!

Special thanks to @CasualCart for creating the artwork for the Wonder Sage box art.

I'm kicking this challenge off with a very short playthrough of Astro Warrior. It's really ridiculously short. However, it seemed very difficult at first and I was wondering whether I could make it past level 2. Then I realized that the indestructible "hazard" that move down the screen are actually power ups. From there on it went pretty quickly. And I at least have to commend this game for running very smoothly while throwing a lot at you. Still, it feels more like a demo.

And I beat Alien Syndrome. This was a tough challenge. I really liked the NES version that we played for the contest this year, but this version somehow plays worse even though the Master System should have better hardware. Maybe they made all the sprites too big and then the game didn't run so smoothly or didn't play that well anymore.

Beat Outrun. Did the rightmost route all the way. Not sure if you need all endings. I love Outrun. This port is pretty good for the Master System. Although it always bugged me that Rad Racer was so much smoother.

I'll count it.  I was undecided on the win conditions for this one, but now I think clearing any route is good enough.

I did one round of Spy vs. Spy on standard settings, i.e. I didn't change anything. Don't know if that's eligible. Anyway, neat idea for a game, but pretty bad execution, imho. Maybe it's more fun with a human player.

I'll count it.  I think winning 1 match against the computer should be okay.

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is done. The final boss was way more difficult than any other part of the game. I wound up using a bunch of continues there. I didn't have my camera ready and missed my chance to take a picture.

I thought the SMS port was deeply, deeply flawed, but there was something I respected about its tough difficulty and tricky maps. Did you save all the hostages? If you do, you get an extra item drop at the final boss that makes it much easier.

Wow, I didn't know that. I just saved as many as I needed to. Pretty cool, that the game rewards you for that. I also barely managed to survive that boss, so a little help would have been great.

Yeah, I don't think it's well-known at all. When I beat Alien Syndrome I mapped it out pretty systematically and ended up saving everyone, so it was only once I watched a video playthrough to compare notes that I realized the benefit I'd received on my own playthrough.

I "beat" World Grand Prix. I don't know if you can actually beat this one. I did clear all 12 tracks on Level 1 difficulty by beating the course records. Though, it wasn't in one go. I got a lot of game overs but that doesn't matter because it still retains your course records after game overs. I can post my times of all the tracks if you want. But here's track 12.

So, you're not actually racing against the computer and the points don't matter, right?  If so, I think we can call it done.

Also, I beat Slap Shot.  I'll post a picture later tonight.
