Hell, let's expand it to cover anything Wii U kiosk related... a one stop shop if you will. Below the table is where you can find additional information, such as what TVs can be used to replace the OEM Lynx monitor, a list of demo discs, etc.. If you have information not listed in here, please let me know so I can incorporate it into this post.

The Wii U demo console will not play retail games.

There are 2 versions of the demo console. One with a hard disk and no optical drive and one with an optical drive and NAND storage.
The optical drive variant seems to be more common. It has additional hardware in it with different connectors in the back. (Photo below) 

The connector marked S-SW connects to the reset button on the kiosk.

The connector marked DRC DC IN is for a standard Wii U gamepad charging cable that supplies power to the gamepad. DRC DC IN is a power connector. A standard wii u gamepad charging brick connects to it. If a wired gamepad is not used, no need to connect it. It sends power to the demo gamepad over the cable. 

The thick original cable on the kiosk has 2 components. the RF cable and the 6-pin DRC cable. Power will go through the DRC part. The RF portion is for video. Both halfs of the cable need to be plugged into the demo gamepad at all times for it to work. The demo gamepad has no battery.

The cable you linked will not work. It needs to be Male SMA (not RP-SMA) on both ends and dont forget the 6 pin DRC needs to be plugged in as well.

You can sync a retail gamepad and once you do you can choose whatever demos are on the unit. Put a blank SD card in the wii and turn it on.

Without an antenna the gamepad needs to be super close to the wii u , pretty much touching it. Even my antenna isnt that great. as I am using the wrong kind of antenna. I have something better coming in the mail and will report back once it arrives.

The gamepad is hard wired into the console. 

There are two main parts inside the gamepad cable.

• A coax cable supplies an RF signal for the display using a 7.67mm male SMA connector on both sides.   
• A 6 wire DRC cable with a JST connector supplies power to the gamepad.

The physical kiosk contains two gamepad charging adapters. The first connects to the demo console for the gamepad and the second connects to the WIS-07 module. This module is where the wiimote and nunchuck are wired to. The WIS-07 module is connected via a standard USB cable to the Wii U demo console. (See photo below)

Note: The console displays an onscreen message if the USB cable is disconnected from the WIS-007 but the wiimote still works via bluetooth. I am not yet sure what the purpose of the USB cable is.

Turning on the demo console with an SD card boots it in a service menu.

From this menu you can sync a retail gamepad to the demo unit. Since the RF/Wifi signal is routed to the back SMA connector and not to an internal antenna the range is very limited. The gamepad needs to sit right on top of the console.
I attached a wifi antenna with a makeshift male SMA connector and the range increased to several feet. (See photo below.)

The demo gamepad can be connected to the Wii via a male SMA to male SMA cable if the original cable is not available.

Increased range for a synced retail gamepad! This was just a wifi antenna that I had laying around. I dont believe the Wii is putting out much power to this connector as its expecting to be connected via an RF cable.

 

Well I've got the demo gamepad working on the demo console. I dont have the original cable so I decided to make my own. If one ever gets posted on ebay the seller will probably want some rediculous amount for it.

I picked up a 10 foot male SMA to male SMA cable on ebay. It plugs directly into the gamepad and the back of the Wii.

I used a regular gamepad battery to power it as I haven't worked out the power portion of the cable yet. -- but it works! I need to order some bits and pieces in order to make this a more permanent cable.

There is nothing mystical nor magical about this hardware. It just uses wired-rf instead of wireless-rf like the retail unit does.

 

By the way. This also works but the controller must be turned on from the button inside the battery compartment. Pushing that button also turns on the Wii U. I am thinking that little board that the power goes through automatically turns on the controller when power is applied via the stock cable. (The power button on the front of the controller is disabled)

the controller hub is a usb to i2c. one ic is the brains other is just to expand i2c to other ports. brains is PIC18F14K50. 5 pin header on back next to usb is a icsp. ive not seen if i can dump the chip yet. pc does see this device if pluged in as USB\VID_1398&PID_0004&REV_0000

wii numchucks are i2c (confirmed) and i cant find the post but the i read somewhere the wiiremote was just power and it connected via reg way on these kiosks.

I have one of the hard disk demo consoles. I started a breakdown of the files on the hard drive but life happened and ran out of steam. I found the USB key locked inside the kiosk itself, from the files I've sent a few other people more knowledgeable than myself, the hard disk was filled with about 200gb or so of demos and other files.

 

Demo console has demos already loaded on it. I has a separate contained micro computer attached to it which appears to be the place new demos and files were downloaded to then uploaded by a USB cable to the demo console as it doesn't have a disc drive.

Cool, if there’s any other info you are after let me know. I don’t know how “rare” this version is, but I have yet to see one with the micro PC that runs Linux. This kiosk was taken out of a closed down store shortly after the Wii U launch from what I was told. It appears to be the type of unit people were discussing they saw running Linux before the actual consoles made it to the store. Still a lot of mysteries.

I learned something about the interaction between the gamepad, the reset button, and the console. So how the reset function works is that when you plug one of the gamepad power cables into the console, it actually powers on the console. By pressing the reset button, you are basically pressing the power button, as it will turn off, wait a couple of seconds, and then turn back on. 

Sometime soon, I am gonna dive into finding out why so many of these kiosks monitors have audio problems. I am gonna attempt to repair it by assembling a cap kit and going from there, I just have no idea when I will have the time to do so.

 

Also, if someone wants to make a cable for their gamepad, I have both sides of it, only problem is that the cable itself is cut. If someone wants it, just shoot me a message and I will send it to ya for cost of shipping.

Yea I had tinkered with it last summer but I didn’t really have a spare 200Gb hard drive to copy it into. There’s about 150gb or so of demos, videos and firmware for the demo unit and what looks like an old interface to use the silver box as a stand alone unit by itself. I upped a good chunk of it for people to mess with. At some point down the road when USB sticks are cheap enough I’ll grab one to copy it to unless I come across a spare hard drive somewhere in my house. Other kiosk projects just have me a little tied up at the moment.

Hey everyone with the monitors I have some good info for ya. From what I understand audio problems are a common problem with the kiosk monitor. This can be resolved by replacing the capacitors inside the TV. I have a nearly complete cap kit that I tried out on my monitor and saw success. I'll post the kit info later today.

It has a bunch of demos and other stuff that is beyond me but maybe someone can make sense of it and let me know if anything is useful in general or for my demo console.

Might be a good idea to just create a mega account and upload it there (you get 50GB free). If you do that, people can easily duplicate it to their own account, and eventually upload it to archive.org (which tends to have a slow upload speed).

As far as I am aware there is no drop in replacement, the one linked wasn't even a perfect drop in as you had to make a mount or buy a wall mount for the kiosk, granted it was probably easier than other tvs, but still required a mod.

I made 3d printed covers for the slots of ypu removed them. The only other solution is to replace them I guess.

Hi all, I only joined to give some info on the Wii U kiosk console I have.

It doesnt have any demos on it, someone must have removed the USB drive they were on but it does play, look, act like the retail version and has a standard sized HDD.

It has two pad attachments, I only have one wired pad and of course, won't connect to another gamepad. I've not seen anything like it while trawling around for info about the Wii U Kiosk.
