My date codes

I started a spreadsheet of all my date codes. It only has a few cartridges for now, but I'll add the rest of the ones I have later. I've noticed while looking through my collection that some of my 1988 games still use flathead screws, even though they're 3 screw games and most 3 screw games use different protective screws. Must have been a transitional period. I'm sure this has already been documented before, but I never noticed this until now and I just thought it was really interesting.

Also, I found some codes that I'm having a bit of trouble deciphering. These are in my 3 screw copy of Double Dribble.20210721_042722.jpg.01567ae40d8ce9f993c296993f821383.jpg

Are you making a spreadsheet? I'd be cool to get a link for the community if possible.

I have some date codes. Apologies if they've been mentioned already

Bubble bobble 91004

Darkwing duck 20603

DuckTales 91024

MegaMan 2 91109

River city ransom 00119

Tecmo super bowl 30317

Whomp em 10207

I never thought about making a spreadsheet, I've been entering them into a web form and they go into a database on my server. Once they're in the database I can display them on a website however I want.

I guess I could make a spreadsheet and give open access to it. Hopefully nobody just deletes the entire thing.

I found some other interesting date codes. This first one is from a copy of Soccer.20210723_045754.jpg.795d4cdbbfdb1ceda9addf7332d235bc.jpg

And this one is a copy of Duck Hunt.20210723_052545.jpg.06596eae4c2209b567392062ad5d7405.jpg

They both seem to follow a three digit format, where the letter represents a month. However, M would be month 13, which doesn't exist since there's only twelve months. So, I'm not exactly sure how to read these codes. Also, I have another copy of Soccer that was printed in 1985. So, that might help with finding the game's release date if that still hasn't been determined yet.

The month format skips I so M represents November. It's the second and third weeks of November in 1985.

Ah, I see now. I guess that makes sense why I would be skipped, since it could be mistaked for a one. Also, wouldn't M represent December? Unless L is also skipped for the same reason.

Dick Tracy:

PRG has no date code...CHR is 025N where "0" is the year, and "25" is the week. so 1990 Week 25.

Archon:

The Sanyo chips are hard. You basically need to know the pattern since they use a very different formula. Its "YM" format hidden inside the 5 digits of "98282" and it's the first two digits. "98" is 1989-Month 8 there is no month 0, and month 10, 11, and 12 are represented as A, B, and C.

The PRG on that chip is 9K3 which is 1989 October Week 3. It's a YMW format where the middle letter is alphabetical, but skipping "I" so A = January, B = February, C = March, D.E.F.G.H....NO I....J = September, K = October, L = November, M = December

Ivan Ironman Stewarts Super Off-Road:

Like Sanyo before it, Sony is similiar. However it DOESN'T exclude the "i" in the month pattern. It's hidden in the "0A56E" where 0 IS 1990, and A is January.

You're right, M is December. Oops.

Alright, I got a couple more codes to share here. Any idea on how to decipher these?

Section-Z20210724_012038.jpg.4ddc03c7dadda9fb7ed5918a454649be.jpg

Rush'n Attack

20210724_032146.jpg.10042016f8cc8d4ecabf3507f116040b.jpg

I'm also still not sure how to read the codes for Double Dribble. So, if anyone could help with that, I would really appreciate it.

And, that's all I got! Obviously, I have more cartridges to open up. However, without the proper screwdriver bit, those are gonna have to wait. But still, I was able to find codes in a pretty sizeable chunk of my collection. So, I hope that my contributions are helpful to you.

Here is the complete spreadsheet if you want to take a look.

I think I got all of them correct, but let me know if there are any mistakes with my code interpretations.

Oh wait, I actually have one more game that I can open for codes. That bizarre copy of Blaster Master that I have. I guess someone must have switched the back of that game with a Canadian game printed in either 1987 or 1988. Since those use flathead screws, that means I can actually open it. This is also the latest printed game that I can open up right now. Printed in early 1989.

PRG - 8909

CHR - 8909

Okay, NOW I'm done. I'll get the other screwdriver bit at some point, but I want to take a break from this. I can't wait to see the database be completed!

I am in the process of putting together the date codes for the boxes and manuals I own, and noticed that some of the manual dates are preceded by two letters.  And I see some have already been listed in this thread, like “I K 10503” shown above.

Do we know what these letters represent?  Has this been discussed already?

 Thanks

I do not but I've noticed it as well. I'm thinking it could be the manufacturing location like when a Cent has S or D on it whether it was minted in San Francisco or Denver.

I’d definitely like to know what the letters mean also, I can see your train of thought with the locations like coins, would be cool if that is it and we can decipher them. Have a couple more incoming.

Photos not required but if you send them, I'll verify the dates are accurate. I'll take whatever you have, or if you'd send photos so you don't have to write them out, that works for me as well.

I'll be entering them into my database myself, it's not something I have open to the public at this time.

Boxes, manuals and chips were printed on specific days and definitely not every day. If you look at a few posts above, the Super Mario Bros. 3 boxes have known print dates of 91208, 91219 and 00119. There are no other known dates for these currently, so if you find a box, it will likely have one of these dates on it.

My Super Mario Bros. 3 box doesn’t have either of the 3 codes you mentioned that it should have, here’s a picture of mine
