Please Post All Your NES Date Codes

Recommended Posts

Hi Code Monkey, here's a list of my box codes for you. Has anyone else mentioned Zoda's Revenge having a backwards number? The last digit on my box is a 4, but it's backwards; if that is indeed unusual, let me know and I can take a photo of it if you'd like. Anyway, I'll try to carve out some time to do the manuals and the boards later:

The Zelda games also don't have codes, so it's not strictly non-Nintendo games.

Of course not, Zelda was released in 1987.  For a game like Return of the Joker, it absolutely would have a date code had it been manufactured by Nintendo, but it wasn't so it doesn't (Sunsoft also screwed up the game's -USA code, giving it an extra digit it shouldn't have had, but that is neither here nor there...)

The Zelda box did get redesigned many times later on, but I guess that's not exactly as a newly released game. Although they did add date codes the manual at some point.

Can someone please interpret these codes for me? These are the very few I cannot figure out, thanks.

Here they are converted into the YYWW format (with original formats in parenthesis).

Dick Tracy: PRG = no date code, CHR = 9025 (YWW)

Archon: PRG = 8942 (YMW), CHR = 8931 (YM, exact week unknown, list is first week)

Super Off Road: PRG = 9009 (YYWW), CHR = 9001 (YM, exact week unknown, list is first week)

Jackal: PRG = 8905? (YMD ish), CHR = 8901 (YM, exact week unknown, list is first week)

The Jackal PRG is a guess since even bootgod doesn't have the conversion for the Konami masked ROMs, but it does seem to line up with the CHR.

Beauty, thanks!

I also just found a Millipede in my collection with a CHR date code of 9501. Nintendo was still making and sending out NES games in 1995?

There are games reprinted for Infogrames in Europe that were reprinted in late 1996.

Smurfs, and Asterix.

Startropics II: Zoda’s Revenge

11104 *’4’ is backwards*

I wonder if that's meant to be 40111, but got printed backwards. I'll check my cart/box/man tomorrow.

40111 would be 1994-January-11 which is a little early for the March 1994 release of the game.

I think it's supposed to be 41110 which would put it in line to be a reprint shipped out with Wario's Woods NES release.

But now I want it to find out myself if the "1" is backwards as well.

Well I checked, because I didn't want to lay in bed thinking about it. They're not defined enough either way.

B 1110(backwards 4)

M none (?) EDIT: I can seem to ever so faintly make out number impressions in the usual spot, but not well enough to make it out. Looks printed with no ink.

Both chips 401A5 (4O1 = 1994/Oct/11 = 9442) Thanks@0xDEAFC0DE

Dick Tracy:

PRG has no date code...CHR is 025N where "0" is the year, and "25" is the week. so 1990 Week 25.

Archon:

The Sanyo chips are hard. You basically need to know the pattern since they use a very different formula. Its "YM" format hidden inside the 5 digits of "98282" and it's the first two digits. "98" is 1989-Month 8 there is no month 0, and month 10, 11, and 12 are represented as A, B, and C.

The PRG on that chip is 9K3 which is 1989 October Week 3. It's a YMW format where the middle letter is alphabetical, but skipping "I" so A = January, B = February, C = March, D.E.F.G.H....NO I....J = September, K = October, L = November, M = December

Ivan Ironman Stewarts Super Off-Road:

Like Sanyo before it, Sony is similiar. However it DOESN'T exclude the "i" in the month pattern. It's hidden in the "0A56E" where 0 IS 1990, and A is January.

Oh, their those stupid YMD bar patterns except this is one of the ones without a bar.

4O1 = 1994/Oct/11 = 9442

That puts it in line with Wario's Woods...and more or less confirms it's supposed to be 41110 on the box.

...so many different chips, I wonder how many chips used across the entire 8-bit Nintendo library exist. NTSC, PAL-A, PAL-B, Comboy, Samurai, Playtronic, Famicom....all it.
