Acronyms to help users not in the know

There's a handy new feature on the forum where we can add acronyms to a sort of dictionary in the backend, which lets users hover over the acronym on a post to see what it stands for.

Here's a prime example: VGS

If you hover/click on "VGS" above, you should see a little "Video Game Sage" appear.

This can help people who are new to collecting to know the acronyms we all take for granted. So here is where I ask you, the pros - what acronyms should we add to the dictionary? Obviously I can think of a bunch myself, but I figured asking you all would get me the acronyms YOU are most likely to actually be using on a day to day basis. This will make it more useful much more quickly.

SO! Gimme the deets. Share some commonly used acronyms and what they stand for, and I'll add (most of) them to our dictionary.

That's a really neat feature, actually! I never would've thought of that.

I imagine it'll mostly be used for collecting terms such as CIB, but perhaps it could be used for game series as well? LoZ (Legend of Zelda) as an example. Just spitballing since I don't know of any uncommon acronyms other than maybe NFR (Not For Resale) but either way this is a very good idea for sure 🙂

Oh no... the eternal argument - what DOES CIB stand for?

Complete In Box?

Cart, Instructions, Box?

I've always had the Complete In Box stance on that, but you could go with either one, they pretty much mean the same thing anyway, haha. Worst case scenario you could just add them both 😛

MD - Megadrive

SMS - Sega Master System

NES - Nintendo Entertainment System

SNES - Super "NES"

MCD - Mega CD

DC - Dreamcast

GC - Gamecube

Repro - Reproduction

BNIB - Brand New In Box

That's my 2 minutes of brainstorming.

Here's another acronym I know privately, but would like to share with you guys:

DOA (2 meanings):

1. Dead or Alive (fun fighting game with jiggling boobie physics)

2. Dead on Arrival (not fun)

You may notice I've already added a few of these! Very nice list, I'll get them all added! 😄

PM

DM -> I have no idea what this is but I've seen it.

I just now (thanks to someone's previous post) learned what shmup means. Now I need to know what shoot-em-up is.

YMMV

IMHO

PM = Private Message
DM = Direct Message

(They're both the same thing)

YMMV = Your mileage may vary
IMHO = In my honest opinion

(just for your reference, in case you're listing things you don't know)

I hate the word 'shmup', too, dude. But think of it this way - now that it's part of the VGS dictionary, maybe everyone will be educated about this abomination of vocabulary and vow never to use it again haha.

@CasualCart over here is clearly unaware of my NES game / website. T_T

Haha it's Shmup-Speed, right?

Okay, okay - I'll concede that it's not that bad, but I definitely prefer 'shoot-em-up', or 'space-shooter' where that's applicable. I'll stand down on that debate, though. Game-related semantics is a horrible, horrible rabbit hole to fall down (just look at how much hostility breeds when someone brings up the dictionary definition of 'retro').
