Let's beat the NintendoAge 2016 record of 218 North American games!

Rules:
- Games must be started and finished no earlier than January 1, 2019, NA time.
- No cheat codes, game genie codes, glitches etc. may be used
- Emulation is allowed, but no save states, altered roms, or any advantages over playing on original hardware. (Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player are allowed.)
- Game saves and passwords can only be used if they are obtained from a fresh new game, started this year.
- Photos are not required, but they're fun.

Scoring:
Scoring is based on how many times each game has been beaten in a previous year's thread. Each game beaten is worth at least 1 point. Games that have not been beaten every year since 2013 are worth an extra .5 points per non-beaten year. So each game ranges from 1 to 4 points, as shown in the table below.

Requirements:
    - 100% completion is not required, thus the default or “normal” difficulty is typically fine.
    - Definite ending or credits screens are king. If a game has a “bad” ending and a “good” ending, the “good ending” is typically required.
    - If a game loops indefinitely, only one loop is required.
    - I tried to anchor the trickier ones to actual in-game metrics, such as high score tables, obvious loops, etc. So if some requirements seem too easy/hard, it’s because I didn’t find a better anchor.
    - Games with indisputable endings might only say “Complete,” but I’d like to eventually include how many levels/stages/rounds are in the game, as that can be useful for first-timers. (e.g., Complete all 8 stages)
    - If anything looks off, or if you want to challenge/discuss these metrics, please do so. Since I made this list myself, it likely suffers from tunnel vision. Many of these requirements were determined with little more than a glance at a YouTube video or the game’s GameFaqs page.

Games not in this list:
- Wisdom Tree unofficial releases
- Pokemon Yellow: this is a Game Boy Color game.
- 5 Infogenius titles: These are too much fun and would spoil the rest of the list.
- Mortal Kombat 1&2: Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart
- Asteroids/Missile Command: Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart
- Centipede (Accolade) and Centipede (Majesco) are consolidated into one entry, since gameplay is identical across both titles.

Centipede/Millipede and Race Days each include entire games that exist on their own cart. Completion requirements focus only on the modes that aren’t already represented on those other carts.

It is my humble honor to offer the first completed Game Boy game on the VGS thread.  Mole Mania is done!

What an addicting, charming, and long puzzle game.  The goal is the same on each screen but the method keeps changing. Sometimes the challenge is about avoiding enemies, sometimes it's about timing it right, most of the time it's about moving things around in the right order, and in many cases there appears to be more than one right way to solve the puzzle.  Each stage introduced new and compelling mechanics. What I also found interesting is that the game would include elements you could completely ignore. I don't know if they were meant to be fake-outs or not, but it added to the challenge for me. This screen is presenting me with chess, but wants me to play checkers.  The bosses were a mixed bag as some were simply tedious. The bonus stages provided a good change of pace, but I found them to be a bit frustrating since Jinbe moves so fast. The cut scenes and characters were cute and put later GB games to shame. Highly recommended.

(by the way, the images look like they're displaying really large and I didn't see resize options when inserting from URL, so feel free to pass along any hints on the best way to add them on here.) **EDIT: learned how to resize down from 1000 to 400**

Next up for me, the randomizer chose Snoopy's Magic Show.

Hey, guess who just beat Navy SEALs? This guy, that's who:

Surprisingly addictive in that "punishingly difficult and occasionally mean Euro game" kind of way. Dunno why the Super Game Boy 2 border looks so blue, my new phone seems to have applied a weird filter to the picture...

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention, this game does something awesome: once you reach Level 5 (the last level) in normal gameplay, it becomes available in practice mode. Such a smart decision from the devs, as it lowers the frustration factor massively!

Great clears!

I'm still fighting with my Google doc that was optimized for creating HTML tables for NA. It should actually be a lot simpler on VGS, since you can just copy from Docs into VGS. But there are still a couple quirks, like it's adding grid lines where there shouldn't be lines, and I'm having some column-width grief. I'll get it figured out soon.

Snoopy's Magic Show is done...

Do you want a game that relies almost completely on luck? Well then do I have the game for you. Snoopy's Magic Show (magic show not included) is chock full of no surprises, unresponsive controls, giant hit boxes, tight corridors and random enemy movements.  Do the same thing 10 times and get 10 different results. Keep trying that level until you get lucky enough for the game to allow you to beat it!  No skills necessary, anyone can play. You might have to hit "A" a couple times, though. Marvel at the recycled levels. Wonder at the power-ups that don't last long enough to be used. Shriek in terror at the grating music and sound effects. You'll want to look away, and you should.  Run, don't walk, to your next game.

Found out you can double click to resize the images!

Next up for me is... Incredible Crash Dummies...  Uh oh.  I think I need to have a talk with the randomizer.

It's not that bad until the third/fourth loop, when it gets very unpleasant. I got a fair ways towards beating it a few years ago, but lost the will to continue.

Thank you. It was disappointing and Spike was a butt. I was really hoping for a Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle type of a thing, but no.  Instead it was Snoopy's War of Attrition. Figure out the puzzle in a minute and spend 10 minutes retrying until the random enemy AI lets you execute the solution.  Oh well.  When the goal is to play them all, there's bound to be some stinkers.

Yogi Bear's Gold Rush is done:

Fairly easy game, except that you have to get 12 hidden items to get a good ending, with no recourse if you miss one (except to restart your game). Most aren't too tough to find, but a couple require blind leaps of faith, and the last one expects you to walk through a wall of spikes, with absolutely no cues to suggest the idea. Plus there are more than 12 levels in the game, and you have no way of anticipating which ones will have the hidden items.

I caved and looked at a walkthrough for several of them, which is a shame since it'd be more rewarding to find them on my own (as I did for the majority), but investing an hour only to get scammed in the final area isn't my idea of fun.

BTW there's a trivial 1UP loop in the third part of the first area -- you can collect two 1UPs and just commit suicide, or power through and collect a total of 4 since they respawn after you go to the bonus room.

I usually try to play on hardest settings but, after playing with "attempts" and "retrys" [sic] cranked up to maximum, I'm not planning to bother with a replay since I 1cc'ed the game and, though I finished with only 1 life remaining, could easily have accumulated 20 more.

Congratulations. I just picked up Yogi this summer, but haven't dived in. Good to know there is a better ending to shoot for. I don't usually go for the hardest setting personally, because I'm pretty bad at games generally, but I do try to be as comprehensive as possible.

You know I was actually thinking of stopping after I beat my next game as that would put me at 25 for the year personally and I want room for improvement, but if we're close to a record, then I may have to keep rolling along to help.

I usually try to beat games on their hardest difficulty setting, but since Yogi doesn't have difficulty settings, the only thing you can adjust is the number of lives/continues you get (the aforementioned "attempts" and "retrys"). The game is generous with extra lives, and I was able to pull off a 1CC with little effort, so those settings are sort of moot.

I restarted whenever I missed a coin object (the thing you have to collect 12 of), but I think it'd be super-easy to complete the game and get the bad ending. Haven't seen that ending firsthand, though my understanding is that it basically tells you that you've failed.

And yeah, I think we're around 15 games from the record -- not far at all! I'm very hit-and-miss in my video gaming lately, but at least I have the Super Game Boy 2 set up and ready to go now, so I'll probably keep knocking a game off here and there through the end of the year.

Per what you said here and in the N64 thread, Reed Rothchild (aka Brock Landers) seems to be having good luck with his tables -- maybe he has a suggestion to make them more cooperative? It's a drag not being able to view an HTML-esque source with this software.

Thanks for adding the running total to the OP! And you're absolutely right, I overlooked that 2016 had some unrecorded wins right at the end (link here). My count is 218, with 6 games unrecorded at the end (Kirby's Dream Land 2, Pinball Fantasies, Rolan's Curse, James Bond 007, Adventures of Star Saver, The Punisher).

I have the manual for this game.  It says that there are 100 levels in Chiseler and 50 levels in Catch the Fool.  The other 3 mini games don't have levels and it seems you just do the same thing over and over.

The Funfair requires you to enter a ticket number earned by playing each of the mini games.  Here are the requirements for each game:

Chiseler - Reach level 25 or higher
Djali Bowling - Score at least 150 in one game
Catch the Fool - Reach level 32 or higher
Upsy Daisy - Win 5 games
Picture Puzzle - Complete in 20 seconds or less.

When you get the tickets, you're given a special challenge.  If you complete a challenge, you get a Congratulations screen and it indicates how many of the challenges you have completed.  I'm not sure what happens if you complete all 5.

Ah ok, this is good info. I thought I had gotten pretty far in Catch the Fool, and I quit because it didn't seem like anything was changing. Helps to have the actual baselines for each game. I'm going to try a few of these.

Edit: I managed to finish a Picture Puzzle in under 20 seconds, which is tough when the tiles move so slowly, lol. It indeed gave me a passcode, I entered it into the funfair, and it "spun the wheel of chance" that landed on Picture Puzzle. I had to do a puzzle in under 35 seconds. I did it, it gave me a congratulations screen, and asked if I wanted to challenge again. I said yes and the same wheel spin landed on Picture Puzzle again, I assume it's all for show. I'll try and get some more passwords to see if anything changes.

Good idea, looks like he gives the table its own post with nothing else in it. That would be helpful. I'll retool things tomorrow.

Yeah, I got the bowling passcode and the wheel of chance always landed on bowling.  The bowling challenge is to get an exact number of points in a certain number of frames.  I found it very easy to bowl a perfect game.  Start slightly to the right of the center and bowl with a left curve at full/close to full power and it will be a strike every time.

I know I'm late to the game on this being November, but I decided like in past years when I could I'd do something about the Gameboy list.

You can tick off this evening Parodius and The Getaway Highspeed II, and I noticed Ninja Gaiden Shadow wasn't done and it is now too.

Japanese imports carry any weight here?  I can finish Samurai Spirits 3 on there, also Gansou Yanchamaru (the true Kid Niki 2 sequel of the NES game.)  I do have Samurai Shodown on GB, I could finish that for another if it's wanted.

It returns! Alas, I haven't finished any GB games in a while. I might come back now, in honor of VGS rebirth. I know I had several games in-progress, I will continue to work through them.

Welcome! Yes, we do track Japanese games, we just don't keep a full list posted. They were missing for a while but now they're at the very bottom of the big table. If a Japanese game has a USA or PAL-region release, then that's where it gets counted.

Sorry it's all scrunched together. The visuals of the thread are improving, but they're not quite where I want them yet.

I didn't see it last night when I peeked as it's just those 3.  I've got Trip World which was done, but Samurai Spirits 3, Ganso Yancha Maru, and also that Nekketsu Dodgeball Bu game too from the region that's why I asked as they didn't have values assigned or listed.  I own 3 of the 4 Konami GB Collection games that are GBC re-releases of old GB titles from Japan ported into english so those are choices too.

What did you think of The Getaway?  It doesn't seem very well liked.  When I first played it, I didn't like it either, but I gave it another chance last week while testing games for the contest.  At first, I still didn't like it, but I kept playing and it started to grow on me.  I wouldn't say it's a great pinball game, but it's certainly playable.
