Yeah a lot of that is like recent trends or just what's popular right now. Something will always come along that peaks much higher than Depeche Mode (or Madonna etc).

Some of it is good, or even really great, but often doesn't hold the same lasting appeal in the context of pop music. The thing about Depeche Mode is that (despite my own feelings towards their later stuff) they have been going strong for ages and are still on top of their game, continuing to play gigantic sold-out stadium concerts, and their music is still ubiquitous anywhere I go.
