The NES had a slow start in North America because children could not identify with an Italian plumber who got high from shrooms. Unsold SMB carts were buried in several landfills.

It wasn't until the popular Ghostbusters came to the NES that the system really took off and saved the industry. After which almost every new game was about climbing stairs. Kids love to climb stairs.
