Yeah, it's a year old, but I'm still stoked about this! Darkest Dungeon is a masterpiece, and hopefully DD2 lives up to its predecessor! I have high hopes, after all 1)they are taking their time with the game 2)they care about their game 3)they're not Blizzard (nor EA)!

ps Definitely a Mountains of Madness vibe...

First Impressions:

+Still has a lovely atmosphere.
+Still has the lovely character sprites and backgrounds.
+Still has wonderful music.
+Still has fabulous narration.

Changes:

Many different mechanics. For instance, you no longer accumulate money and items as in the first game. Instead, when a party is wiped out or you end an expedition at an inn, you restart with a random number of items/trinkets you can purchase depending on what you have unlocked. I don't hate this, but I feel it adds more of an RNG mechanic into the game. Also some trinkets you will only find after a boss fight. So you may have unique trinkets unlocked for your party, but you will only get them after a tough fight which you may or may not win. That said, you can upgrade your characters. Three ways to do this, first is by going to "shrines" which allow your characters to unlock new combat skills, this is permanent. Second, you can upgrade skills you have acquired by getting "mastery" points, this lasts as long as the characters are alive. You get those randomly after battles. Each skill for each character can be upgraded once. Upgrading a skill greatly increases it's potency, so you will want to upgrade all 5 skills. You can also upgrade characters by spending "candles" (they're basically exp points) which permanently upgrades the characters. You will need to upgrade the characters, since battles are far more challenging. After beating the first boss of the first stage (two characters lost), I tried the second stage with a new party, and in my first battle Death showed-up and just wiped me out. 100% unfair, he hid behind two tombstones and killed my ranged attackers before I could do anything. So yeah...

The stagecoach mechanic is fine. I read quite a few complaints about it, but it's no different really than walking through the dungeons. The only real difference is that you can not go backwards. I don't mind this, I think it's well done, and you can upgrade the stagecoach which is cool. BUT, what I think is unfortunate is that you have no true base as in the first game. Rather, the stagecoach is meant to be in lieu of a town. I'm probably biased considering how I loved DD1, but I felt upgrading the town was more "meaningful".

These are just first impressions. My overall impression is that this is going to be a very fun game, but not as amazing as the first DD. That said, the first DD was "the first" and there's always something more original and exciting about the first of anything. So, I do think any fan of the first game @Reed Rothchild -- should at least give this a fair chance. I'll update more as I get further into the game.

Oh, also the first DLC is out. I think it's kinda shitty that on top of purchasing the physical game they're also making us pay for the DLC...

Heard it wasn’t as good as the first one

i still need to get back into that first game

So far I would say it's not as good as the first, but it's hard to gauge until I get farther in. I will say it has been fun so far, but again, I'm not far in, I've only "beaten" the first stage. Although "beaten" is not really the proper term, since you are expected to go back to the first stage and fight bosses which are honestly more challenging than the stage boss because you need "trophies"... as I said, it's a different mechanic than the first game. I would say more emphasis on fights and they are certainly more challenging than in the first game. Many (all?) characters have been nerfed, although I say this without having upgraded them yet.
