jonebone 1,271 Member ·
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but as I'm finally trying to knock out the NES licensed set, I want to make sure that my checklist is 100% accurate. I don't even know where I got it from but I know some people on here have iron clad lists? Ideally I'd like to do Licensed + Tengen so I'd be curious if anyone has a Licensed vs. Unlicensed list? Also, is there any general rule about duplicate games? Examples: Pac-man Namco vs. Licensed (And then Tengen Pac-Man) Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt (as Separate Games) vs. SM / DH on a cart Etc. Appreciate any insight, thanks!
RH 4,440 Member ·
I came here to tell you "good luck" with that Sachen set, but it seems you're not in need of that. I'm not even into that stuff, but when that one guy was trying to sell a complete, NIB lot, I felt tempted because I knew that'd be killer trade fodder one day... or might even put my kids through school. 8-bit_boice 46 Member ·
It really depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. You also get into label variants like gun.smoke, blue/black untouchables, MTPO vs PO, silver/yellow Metroid, game revisions like tecmo bowl and tecmo NBA basketball where they actually took characters out or added new characters, the 4 different variants of Wayne Gretzky, then you also have some games like Hollywood squares where there's a blue and a black box but no different cart and flying dragon that has variant manual and boxes but not carts. I can try and find my list for you this weekend if you don't get one before. There's also a couple label variants for unlicensed tengen Pac-Man. TDIRunner 2,455 Member ·
I can't help you with the list, but I'm sure several people here will be able to cover that. As far as duplicates go, if I were going for a full licensed set, I would want Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, World Class Track Meet, and both of the combo carts for my set. I would not be interested in variants such as the different Metroid boxes or the gold or grey Zelda titles. But that's just me. People can argue all day long as to what should count or should't. I don't care enough to debate it. That's just what I would want to include in my set.
CodysGameRoom 1,983 Member ·
I used to use the old NA list. I liked getting variants like the Metroids, Grey Zeldas etc but I think one of each would be fine. Just depends on your own personal preference. I think in 2020 anyone arguing about what is a full set and isn't is pretty silly.

Don't have the exact list on me, but my understanding is that the 677 North American licensed games had unique code. So the combo carts, (SM/DH and SM/DH/WCTM, DK Classics, SSVB/NWC, and the Sesame Street one) were separate games owing to their title and game selection screens. The logic gets a little shakier with the unlicensed, but I believe the unlicensed Tengen Pac-Man, Gauntlet, and RBI Baseball are separate from the licensed counterparts, as are the Mindscape and Tengen Temple of Doom. I'm sure there's some tiny difference in the screens or code somewhere. Edited January 29, 2020 by Tulpa
RH 4,440 Member ·
This doesn't help your cause, but the only NES variant I'm interested in is the Yellow Metroid just because the art is cool! Oh, and when they are cheap, I also prefer 5-screws just because I think they look cooler. All of these things are worth considering for the individual. Also, are you going for a full, CIB set, or just carts? Considering your online store, I'd assume you want CIB, with possibly some sealed titles sprinkled in and that's DEFINITELY going to muddy the waters. As a CIB collector the titles without a box or manual like SSVB/NWC annoy me. I already had the Marios with Uncletusk boxes but will have to do the same for that one, Miracle Piano (not buying that gigantic accessory) and WCTM. Just hate collecting them since they break the "norm" of a CIB.
DefaultGen 4,935 Member ·
You could always get a Power Set and Action Set to scratch that CIB itch for pack in games. They wouldn't be half as expensive as lots of nice CIB stuff on NES. Just gigantic!
DoctorEncore 3,687 Member ·
I count 677 games. As for the art of it all, I think the answer really varies from person to person and you shouldn't be confined by anyone else's definition. That being said, here are my thoughts. For others, I would generally define a full set as one copy of every cart, with no concern regarding variants. For me personally, I am collecting a CIB licensed set (+ Tengen) and I want to have every single major cart and box variant along with all posters/maps. This would include multiple versions of the same game such as combo carts, re-releases, and publisher changes. For display purposes, I use repro boxes for games that didn't come in standard sizes. I just enjoy seeing all the little differences in box art and feeling like I've truly experienced it all. But I absolutely must reiterate that it doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks. When you feel you have a full set, then you have a full set. Edited January 29, 2020 by DoctorEncore Changed game count from 678 to 677.

NWC, out with the multcarts and in with Classic Series games? I agree that you really have to set your own limits for what you want to collect, but the licensed NES set is one I think most people do agree on. Wikipedia counts multicart games separately I think and gets to 680, like Short Order and Eggsplode are different, which is crazy IMO. Yeah, I struggled with the same. I got the uncle tusk set and called it a day. when you collect CIB there is always something with each set. NES games with no box NES: Miracle Piano NES: Super V-ball / World Cup NES: Super Mario bros / duck hunt NES: world class track meet NES: Super Mario / duck hunt / world class track meet Edited January 29, 2020 by Mr. CIB

NA is gone for a couple months and we're coming apart at the seams with phantom NES games.

Heh. I forgot there were two versions of Last Crusade, and I didn't remove Galactic Crusader. I think when people come up with 678 or 679, they put in one or both NWCs.

fcgamer 4,355 Member ·
I'm one of the first gen collectors, who feels a complete set follows the Etler list; however, everyone has to decide for him or herself what parameters to set and which games to collect. i definitely can understand the frustration of games in oddball sized boxes, or without boxes. I felt the same when I noticed one of my Panda soft PC boxes was smaller than the others. Why do companies do that stuff? Just to drive the OCD collector sort crazy? I don't even know where I got it from but I know some people on here have iron clad lists? Ideally I'd like to do Licensed + Tengen so I'd be curious if anyone has a Licensed vs. Unlicensed list? Also, is there any general rule about duplicate games? Examples: Pac-man Namco vs. Licensed (And then Tengen Pac-Man) Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt (as Separate Games) vs. SM / DH on a cart Etc. Appreciate any insight, thanks! It seems as though you've already received the answers to your questions here. I love talking about the NES set! Here are a few of my experiences... I started my full set pursuit around 2012. When I found NA, I used the full set list from the games database. I recently put my set together again (I had moved and not unboxed it all). I have a loose licensed set. There were a few things in the NA list that bugged me. Alphabetization was the biggest one. Tulpa's list above looks exactly like what I ended up with (after reading my old NA spreadsheet AND the list on Wikipedia). As already mentioned by others, 677 carts is the most common agreed-upon number that I have seen over time. Then there's Tengen. Once you get into Color Dreams, American Video Entertainment, Camerica, and Wisdom Tree, you add a lot to your list. Some folks also count homebrew, though I don't think that makes a lot of sense. But again, it's all about what you want to do. I think both the licensed and unlicensed stuff that was originally released for the NES during it's production days is awesome. If you want any of these sub-lists, let me know and I'll PM them to you.
Tulpa 3,195 Member ·
Wikipedia pegs the list at 678, and doesn't count the NWCs. I'll be damned if I could find out what the extra game was, though.
