My father once bought a scrap pile from a lumber company - he got 7 loads on a two ton dodge dump truck from it for a pittance. He mostly worked in cement and block work but he was also an excellent carpenter when he put his mind to it. He managed to salvage enough material to build most of two houses (for two of my brothers) out of stuff you would have thought was worthless - I helped him and it was kind of amazing how he was able to piece stuff together and get really severe warps out of stuff. Both houses had upper floors strong enough that you could have driven a small bulldozer on them.
