Fleck's gameroom overhaul

Fleck586

Recommended Posts

So, I've decided to give my gameroom an overhaul over the next few days. If you've never seen my collection, everything PS2 and back can be seen here:

Pics of my Switch collection are also attached.

So, the point is to get them all together in one room. I will be posting pics as we go. I already started clearing the wall which will get the most attention. That will be in the next post. I hope it turns out like I think it will. Need to maximize space.

Here is the start to the overhaul. You can see these shelves only take up about 2/3 of the wall between the windows. The next step is to take these out and build shelves similar to these:

and take up the whole wall between both windows. You can also see all the stuff boxed up and ready to be restacked somewhere else.

Well, as in all life it seems, these things never come without surprises. I totally forgot that we didn't paint behind this shelf unit when we repainted the house a few years ago. So, a trip to Home Depot for paint and supplies and a second coat of paint on all the boards. Should start building tomorrow. A day behind, but I'm ok with that. I should still be able to have everything built by NYE night.

Frame is up! Now just measuring and installing shelves. We made the decision to start the bottom shelf at the same height as the baseboard. This will do two things. 1) I don't have to worry about the bottom shelf games sticking out further than the others, and 2) It will keep the games above the floor line in case of water getting into the basement.

All the shelves are up and we even put the top shelf on all the way across the room to maximize that space. That top shelf isn't quite as tall as I'd have liked but it made sense to rest the back of it on the window frames for extra support. This wall will be almost exclusively NES, including licensed, unlicensed, hacks, homebrews, and repros. The only exception will be the top shelf and the two bottome shelves will hold atari and ColecoVision carts.

Next up is the Zelda wall. Then I've got to figure out SNES. I'm trying to get the wife to let me put up the old shelf that was on the wall where the new shelves are on a different wall. If I can do that, then I can move all the Switch stuff into the room. If she doesn't go for it, then I don't have the room for it all and will have to keep the Switch stuff where it is for now. We shall see...

Zelda wall is done! I was really hoping to keep games separate from figures, but alas I ran out of room and had to mix some in. I'm happy with it, though I have no room for growth other than the top shelf. I have no idea where those systems would go if I had to move them. Lol!

Nice! I have the same problem with consoles and accessories. After much pondering, I realized that hardware and bulky boxes bring me no joy, so I'm gonna get out of the hardware game. It will free up so much room for activities!

I'm going out of town for work this weekend through Saturday, so I only got to work on it while the kids were in bed. I did get the Wii U collection settled and in a place where it can actually be seen, so now all three full sets are in full view as you walk in (NES, N64, and Wii U). I also hung a few signs and installed some LED lights. I'm happy with it, but I wish the red popped more in the cabinet and I'm considering putting another strip facing up to light all the stuff on that top shelf. If anyone has an opinion, I'd love to hear it. Here are some pics.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's been a long week out of town, but I'm back and I got to work on stuff for a little bit last night.  I got all of the smaller Switch stuff into the room and I talked the wife into letting me have that wall, so there is light at the end of the tunnel after being stuck waiting on that decision for a bit.  LOL!  So, here's everything that has been moved in.

I like that I still have some room to grow, but it won't be much for long, especially for the SE stuff.  I was really hoping to have that bottom shelf for the LRG SE's and others of that size, but that didn't work out.  Now I've got to figure out how to get the shelf into the room that houses those AND figure out how to get all the miscellaneous crap onto that particular shelf with some room to expand.  Here's what I'm dealing with:

20200114_211421.thumb.jpg.6439153a6d0a6b7fa93892bf165af4da.jpg

Specifically, I'm looking to move the taller shelf you see on the left into my game room and away from all the other media shelves.  You can see the shelves have some room, but then I've got to figure out how to get all the stuff on top of the shelf on the right onto it as well as where to put all this crap too:

I knew the Switch stuff was going to be the hardest part to figure out.  And, I said it above but it applies here as well.  I well underestimated how much NES stuff I had and it taking up that entire wall has left me scrambling to find places to put stuff that I thought I would have covered.  Stay tuned...

I just kind of tinkered around a bit last night.  One thing that I did get accomplished, which I think is really cool, is the fact that every single game I own is now/will be in this room now.  In the past, I had hidden the few 360 and PS3 games that I had (about 20 or so on each system) in the TV cabinet under the main TV in the basement.  This kept them close to the systems that I was playing them on as well as giving them a home since there was really no room for them in the previous set up.  Now, though still a bit hidden in the corner, they have a home with the other games in the same room.  Once I get all the Switch CE's figured out, then all will be in the same room together.  One thing that has become painfully clear in this process, though, is that this is it.  There is no more room to expand.

The fact that my wife is cool with me taking the wall just out side of the room is a miracle in itself.  I tell her all the time, "You knew what you were getting into when you agreed to marry me."  I think it used to be endearing, but as our children get older, I can tell it is getting ridiculous to her.  And, if I'm being completely honest, it might be just a bit ridiculous at this point.  I counted last night and I am officially up to 429 unique Switch titles.  That number is staggering to me as I probably just this year started bargain shopping.  Where before I was buying at launch, now I am waiting on price discounts with the exception of the Limited games I've been buying.  I should say that my GCU ran out late 2018, so 2019 was really the only year that I paid full price for much of what I bought but go smart as the year went on.  Anyway, I digress...

So, here is what I went with for CE display over the Switch shelves.  I'm not totally happy with it, but it will do for now.  I know over time, what's important to me will change and there's a bit of room for change up there, so I'm not too terribly worried about it.

Here is a pic with all the XBOX, XBOX 360, and PS3 games that are no longer hidden in a hole somewhere...

20200115_222749.thumb.jpg.2ac13c151f8883e307d127622ccd2b88.jpg

And, I also took some time to organize my Wii stuff a bit more.  I still don't know if I will leave this wall this way or change things around a bit more, but for now it's fine.

20200115_222816.thumb.jpg.46d5723abad1140f220dfd6c57189a02.jpg

And, I realize that I keep rambling on about this wall that my wife is letting me use without showing what I'm talking about.  So, the original shelves from the first wall that I redid have no home at this point.  The wall just to the left of the entrance into the game room just had a treadmill sitting next to it.  I found a new home for the tread mill and now I just have to figure out how to cut holes in the shelf to make sure we can still get to the outlet as well as the light switches and we are a go!  Well, sort of.  I am going to have to cut the top shelf off of it to fit under the speaker, but I can still accomplish my goal.  This was imperative as otherwise, the SNES stuff would have had to go where the Switch stuff is and the Switch stuff would have had to stay where it was which was the whole point to all this in the first place.  Moving the Switch stuff into the room was my ultimate goal. Here is a picture of that wall with half the shelf next to it.

Weird. They show up for me in both mobile and PC. I wonder if anyone else is following this thread and can say if it's the same for them?

I'm interested to hear what other people are seeing. Pics don't show for me on mobile (Android Chrome), desktop version of mobile (Android Chrome), or true desktop (Windows Chrome and Edge).

Regardless, looks like your room is turning out great buddy! Love the Zelda setup.

How about now, guys?
