This was one of my early PS2 game purchases. I think I played it for 1 or 2 days and then never went back to it... I didn't dislike it... This was just one of the first to be buried by the infinite backlog.

Interesting, I was also always intrigued by the series including the story that it apparently started as a Resident Evil game, but even after paying money for some of the various releases, I have still never finished a single DMC game.

You get a little bit of the Resident Evil vibe with the spooky castle, monsters, and light puzzle solving.  But the combat took more from Beat ‘em Ups and Fighting games and created a new genre of Character Action Games.  Good story, fun combat, memorable bosses, and a lot of style and attitude.

Played it on PS2 and the HD version on PS4, it has aged really well.  Only thing that holds it back is the camera can’t always keep up with the action in a couple battles.  The platform sections are a bit annoying, but they are thankfully short and forgiving.

DMC3 is still my fav, but the original is close second.

It’s one of those games where I like the rest of the series better so I would rate those higher but this is one is still fun to experience if you like to check out historic firsts/bullet points in gaming history. It’s definitely dated but still playable imo.

8/10 I wanted to like this one more, but the combat was too tedious.  I remember fighting that giant owl on the boat wondering how the heck you were supposed to fight the thing.  I think I spent 30 minutes shooting at it.
