to our very third annual...

VGS Pumpkin Carving Contest!

It's the spooky time of year and that means one thing.  Okay, it means several things, but specifically it means it's time to carve yourself up some pumpkins!  

This contest will last from now until 11/2/2024 at 12 AM VGST (VGS Time AKA Eastern Standard Time).  Immediately afterwards, a poll will be added to this thread, which will last from 11/2/2024 to 11/10/2024 at 12 AM VGST.  Every member is elligible to vote for their favorite jack-o'-lantern.

The rules are the same as last year:

1. Post a picture of your jack-o'-lantern in this thread to participate.
2. You must carve an actual pumpkin.
3. Do the carving yourself. 
4. The pumpkin must be carved during this month of October 2024.
5. Only one entry per person.  Feel free to submit as many as you like but you may only choose one for consideration in the contest.
6. You must vote for a jack-o'-lantern other than your own.

After the deadline, the poll will close, votes will be tallied, and prizes will be given to the VGS members whose carvings received the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd most votes, respectively. The prizes up for grabs as follows:

1st place:  $25 amazon gift card or cash equivalent
2nd place:  $20 amazon gift card or cash equivalent
3rd place:  $15 amazon gift card or cash equivalent

Family's pumpkins. Mine is the firebreathing dragon second from the right. This was hard! Shading a jack o lantern  isn't easy, and hindsight I should have picked an easier drawing, as it's not clear exactly what it is if I didn't say so. Still had fun with it though!

Awesome, as always! What tools do you use to get such precise trimming and shading? A dremel?

I use a cheap wood carving kit, I wouldn't use anything expensive. This is similar to what I use. Then just look at a picture that I print in grayscale to see shading levels that I want to do. Only problem is the pumpkins take 5-6 hours.

Just showing off my Pumpkin here, as I have the past few Halloweens. 

This is Chuck E. Cheese's purple friend, Munch. The name on the Pumpkin says "DJ MUNCH." I went to Chuck E. Cheese on my Birthday this month, and their evening show for the month was DJ Munch's Haunted House Party so that gave me an idea for a Pumpkin picture to carve this year. 

I spent a couple hours in the afternoon carving a picture of Munch wearing his Superhero Halloween costume, but when it was about half complete the "body" came off and the Pumpkin had a large hole in it. So I had use another Pumpkin and restart. I didn't have much time left to carve, so I just carved a picture of his face. I couldn't quite finish it, and I messed up the mouth so he looks a little creepier than he actually is. The picture is based on a picture shown in a Chuck E. Cheese and Friends Coloring & Activity Book I got this year.

I carved a picture of Chuck E. Cheese last year with a design I got on the CEC website. On the site, it was called a "Chuck o' Lantern" so I guess the Pumpkin I have this year is a "Munch o' Lantern".

Pumpkin this year was a little too small for a good face, so just went with some bats. It's a little moldy on the night shot since I waited until Halloween night to light it, a good 10 days after carving:
