PS1 bootlegs on aliexpress

I bought one to see, will report back.

When you compare, hold it up to a light source, I want to know how close they pulled off the black-bottomed part of the disc (which technically, should be more of a very dark purple and not a true black, much like a sharpie)

The only time I've seen actual PS1 discs outside the games were one of Marilyn Manson's albums a while back.

Who even goes to AliExpress to buy genuine sealed games? My expectation is that if I buy anything on AliExpress is going to be fake as hell. People are probably more worried about these being sold on eBay or locally just remember the logic: if a deal is to good to be true, it is. Plus you are always covered by the eBay protection guarantee and if you get scammed locally while holding a fake game in your hands you shouldn't be buying sealed games lol

I don’t think PS1 had a ‘wobble’ in the sense that the Saturn did.

There was a layer of authentication that PS1 had, but I believe someone cracked the code in the past two years. Honestly, after learning that the authentication method was figured out, I was wondering how long it would be before we’d start seeing modchip-less bootlegs in the market. Curious to see if the ones on Ali Express require a mod chip or if they just boot up.

Well, it never hurts to get confirmation, plus documenting a different game can help find consistencies in the inconsistencies.

Yeah I did find it a smudge odd that this person is comparing one game to another. There's nothing really to say that some version of Silent Hill doesn't also have printing flaws or something.

I purchased Xenogears, and plan to compare to my real copy of... Xenogears. Lol.

For one thing, interestingly, it looks like the photos on the listing on AliExpress are NOT exactly what you get, which is interesting. I'm confident they're covering their asses from a legal perspective, but there could be grounds for a return based on it not being as advertised. Gonna look into that.

I was thinking the same thing too, but I sort of understand it.  If I'm going to buy a bootleg of a game, I might as well buy one for a game I don't own, and in fact I should probably get one for a game I won't ever own.

With that said, I'm looking forward to your comparison between a real and bootleg of the same game.

I fully intend to destroy the fake game when I'm done so it makes no difference to me in that regard.

I'm thinking that the Redditor who did the comparison, being of the PAL region, simply didn't have any desire to own (nor spend the money on) an expensive NTSC PS1 game. So fair play on that.

Has anyone tested these to see if they work without a modchip

If they did, that would be an incredible advancement.

From what I see in the original thread, it's still CD-Rs. So that's already a massive tell. Shouldn't be possible to completely pass as the real deal. but of course these are still enough to fool an eBay buyer - and if you're the kind of person who just buys a game to put on the shelf immediately without trying it out, you could probably be fooled.
